alright this is fine

Some union basics:

1. Striking is the LAST RESORT. If a union is at the place where a strike is being proposed it is because they have been bargaining for a long time and exhausted all their other options.

2. Before a strike happens, all the members vote. Everyone is very aware of the status of negotiations long before they’re made public. But if a strike is occurring it’s because an overwhelming majority voted to strike—you want almost everyone in the union to agree before you take such a huge step.

3. Strikes are difficult but necessary demonstrations of workers’ collective power. The hope is that your labor is so essential that the bosses lost profits will make them come back to the bargaining table. The bosses are hoping that the workers will starve to death.

4. Working during a strike is called scabbing. Coming in from an outside industry to do work during a strike is sometimes called crossing the picket line. Both send you straight to hell.

new rules for chess:

1. Friendly Fire ON

2. Landmines

3. If a player loses both of their bishops, the king can now legally divorce the queen without the papal go ahead. This puts the queen into FRENZY mode.

4. Once per game, a player may change one letter in a piece's name to change its role. The rook is now a book. The pawn is now a PAWG. The queen is now...well...I shan't say

5. Knights are now Horses

6. Horses are immune to landmines

7. Pawns can move back a space if they forgot something

8. A bishop can be combined with an adjacent rook to create the Wizard Tower piece

9. Each player now has 2 rows of pawns

I thought this deserved to be with the main post

Let the writers' strike be a reminder:

The average television worker is not international-celebrity-rich. Your blorbos are brought to life by people who are exploited, underpaid, and treated like total shit. Television runs on the undervalued labor of people trapped in the vice-grip of unrestrained capitalism, just like every other industry.

This is the official WGA strike website. It has plenty of info about what's happening, what members should do, and what non-member supporters can do.

Support your fellow workers, support the strike, and listen to the WGA and the strike captains. They're leading this, the rest of us are supporting. Be cautious about spreading around calls for action on social media without checking the WGA's official media first.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a member, I'm not in the strike, I'm just a random IWW member who likes seeing other unions do stuff. Follow the WGA's lead.)

dont get me wrong this is #mood but just try eating a piece of bread with salt. please, seriously. ok? at least a tiny bit. salt helps with nausea, bread calms the stomach acid. if you really can’t face eating anything, just lick some salt like a damn elk, then wait and see if you can manage the bread. make some broth if you’re into that kind of thing. no spices, yes salt. if you’re feeling too weak and shaky to do much, just have a cup of tea with sugar (energy) and lemon (again, good against nausea). nibble on the lemon first, it will feel good, but don’t overdo - citric acid on an empty stomach is a majorly bad idea. take care of yourself, you’re the only you we’ve got

You’re the only you we’ve got”

“just lick some salt like a damn elk” is the new “touch grass”

condolences to everyone in this age of polls who has to see their favourite thing thrown in the ring against a wildly more mainstream character/piece of media armed only with a bad picture and worse description. stay strong.

im so done with seeing articles about kids and screen time that doesnt mention parent behaviors even once. “kids are always on their phones” so are the parents! which the kids look to for how they should behave! ipad babies didn’t chose to only play on their ipads, thats what their parents gave them!

an anecdotal example: when i was a kid, all my parents would do in their minimal free time was watch tv and then they would be surprised when in my sister and i’s minimal free time we would also only watch tv/play video games. they scolded us for not reading books, but they never read books. they scolded us for not going outside but they never went outside.

“kids are always on their damn phones” my mom is in her 60s and opens up candy crush anytime she’s sitting — it isnt just the kids

having anxiety is like being given permanent unwanted custody of a halter arabian. like okay buddy is it panic time again. cool you probably need more exercise and an apple and then maybe you'll calm down.

taking my stupid walks for my stupid mental health with my stupid hypervigilant brain horse

thoroughly enjoying the notes on this post because it's equal parts people with anxiety going "yeah that's what it's like" and people with arabians going "yeah that's what they're like"

if ring took place in 2023 and not 1998 it would be so lethal. can you imagine watching a fucking… cursed tiktok or whatever and dying. i’d be mad

*Trying to make small talk at a bar.* Barnacles are more closely related to butterflies and crabs than they are clams and snails. Kinda fucked up, right? Yeah, they have antennae and everything. I always thought they were mollusks as a kid but they’re not. They’re weird little freaks. They’re arthropods and crustaceans at that. If you ever see barnacles growing on a lobster or a crab, it’s like their lame cousin is hitching a ride with them. I’m scared of barnacles in the cosmic horror way Sherlock Holmes pretended to be worried about bivalves in The Dying Detective. Are you more of a mollusk guy or a crustacean guy? I love them both, can’t pick a side. Do you like Sherlock Holmes?

Would you like another drink? I’ll pay. Bartender, a gin and tonic with extra tonic for me and whatever my friend wants. I need the quinine. My leg is cramping. In 1911, my great great grandfather went to the drugstore to get quinine as a prophylactic because malaria was still a huge problem in the swamps of North Carolina at that time. The pharmacist accidentally gave him liquid morphine so he mixed himself a gin and tonic with morphine instead of quinine and he died. Actually, I think my great great grandmother might have killed him. Women could do that if they wanted in those days. If I had a wife, I wouldn’t mind if she killed me a little. What did you order? Good choice! I like you, you’re fun.

whenever i look into cultural/historical third genders my first question is always "okay but where are the people who were assigned female" and my second is "if they aren't being named, why is that?"

on this note: how much transmasculine history is hidden within stories of "warrior women" that no one bothers to consider from a transmasculine perspective

Personally I'd guess that it's due to modern global westernization (read: Christianization) and the current climate of strict control of women.

I am not white. Digging through the histories of my nonwhite ancestry, you can literally point to exposure to white Christian Europeans and colonization for the flattening of all gender and sexuality expression besides man penis woman vagina make babies together. Gender expression and gender roles completely erased. Cultural understanding of self killed to fit the white man's worldview and religion.

It's not *always* white people's fault- various cultures treated women as nothing more than breeding sows to be bought and sold in marriage long before Christianity was ever a thing. But I would say it certainly *worsened* with the spread of religions which force women into that place, and Christianity is one of those religions, brought to many of these places by various European empires looking to expand.

Which means that, since history is controlled and told by the victors, the cultures that did have differing views on gender and sexuality and assigned sex are viewed largely through a modified lense to make it make sense in our heavily westernized worldview, rather than what it actually was. And as a result we lack information for quite a lot of things.

Have you ever noticed there is similar invisibility of lesbians? Lesbians have existed as long as women have existed and yet most of these additional genders are what we'd know today as cis gay men, intersex people of different variations (since intersex has a large genetic component, it wouldn't shock me to hear that x variation is common in y culture and regarded as z gender, but a variation is more common in b culture etc etc), trans women, and castrated people who were assigned male at birth.

The focus is on "men who are male incorrectly and thus can't fade into the background" (gay men, intersex men, castrated men) and "women who can't take their proper place as women; birthing" (trans women and also castrated men depending on the exact culture) because that's what OUR society cares about the most right now.

But relatively little information on the lesbians, who must have existed. And nothing really on the trans men, who also must have existed. Because they've existed as long as vaginas have existed. And as long as vaginas had any say in where you belonged in society. And what little rep is there, is largely told through that same lens.

"She dressed in men's clothing, performed male work, took up a man's name and everyone called her a man, fought anyone who accused her of being a woman, didn't want to be buried as a woman, and lived her entire life in a man's role. What a great female role model to show little girls that women can be anything! Feminism score!"

"She wrote books and books and books of poetry and intimate letters back and forth with her childhood friend who was also a woman, wistful that she could not marry her friend due to society's laws. Neither of them ever married and their wills said they wanted to be buried together. Their remains were laid to rest in one grave and their tombstone says they will never part even in death. What good best friends, look at this beautiful and pure friendship between women! Girl friendships really are something!"

It's so tiresome. And I'm not saying those I referrenced earlier DON'T have examples just like this, but rather that those examples are more commonly properly attributed to society's focus on what they'd look like under the modern eye, which means you have to dig and dig and dig for historical examples of trans guys (and lesbians) because they're all erased in the telling in the first place.

A good example of this is; I used to own a copy of the NIV Bible. The word "homosexuality" in reference to *gay men only* appears in that Bible over 50 times. There is ONE single example of lesbians, which is Paul complaining that all the men in one of the cities are too busy fucking each other that their wives have no choice but to also do the same. There is no mention of anything transgender but there is mention of eunichs by birth (intersex) and made so (castrated males). The NIV Bible was the most common Protestant Bible variation while I was growing up, maybe close second to the KJV. This Christianized lense is directly influenced by this exact problem- the focus is on gay men, intersex people, and castrated men (which then gets expanded to trans women with bottom surgery because of the "cut your dick off" fearmongering even tho that's not how bottom surgery works) and anyone outside of that is an afterthought. Women and "women" acting "out of place" is a symptom of a lack of man's control over them.
