I would also like to add to the last argument that "safe for children" is a nonsense argument on a site that is still rife with violent racism, transphobia, Antisemitism and general white supremacy. Idk about you, but personally I think kids are far more likely to become traumatized by reading or seeing graphic depictions of how adults in the world want them dead simply for existing, than by stumbling over an uncensored cock or cunt.

I feel like the D&D character creation process is missing one vital step

wearing a trans pin this week because I think I've been passing too well with my students/chaperones thus far (I'm in an extremely trans friendly area and environment, and a lot of my students are also trans- I want to be visible to them)

so far the biggest difference I've noticed is that suddenly, they're all using they/them pronouns for me.

for some reason.

the trans pin is next to a "he/him/his" pin.

the notes on this post are a good example of why people REALLY need to be told that "they/them" is still misgendering if you have been told that the person in question does not use those pronouns (incl. by omission, i.e., introducing themselves with pronouns that do not include they/them).

so, i wanna throw this out there As A Trans: i absolutely do this too, and the reason is very simple- it's way, WAY easier to remember 'this person is trans' than it is to remember 'what specific trans they are and what pronouns they use.' if i think someone is cis, 'remembering' doesn't even factor into the situation. it actually gets HARDER for me when the person passes well, because my Cis Assumption Brain will assume, and then i remember Oh Wait They're Trans, Right??? and suddenly i'm not sure it's also worth noting, imo, that a trans flag is legible at a MUCH greater distance than your average pronouns pin

That's the problem.

It shouldn't be an assumption that everyone is cis and uses the pronouns they look like they "should" use, with trans people being the rare exception that need to tell you they're trans, tell you their pronouns, and hope you remember both things instead of just that they're Different and Other.

It should be the assumption that anyone could use any pronouns, regardless of how they look, and you need to prioritize remembering that about them over their gender identity- the same way remembering someone's name is more important than remembering their sexuality.

numerically, statistically, trans people literally ARE the rare exception- I'm not saying that's how it 'should' be, but it's a simple fact. there are a lot more cis people than trans people, and not everybody lives in a place where they have the privilege of going around assuming anyone could be trans.

i am so, so in favor of 'never assuming pronouns,' but not being able to assume puts the burden entirely on memorization, and i don't know about you, but i ALREADY have a very hard time remembering names. adding another piece of information to memorize compounds that difficulty, and it's a VERY tall order for anyone you don't routinely refer to in the third person. and that compounds even further if we want to normalize neopronouns!

i have talked EXTENSIVELY about gender liberation and how pronouns (and gender itself) should be completely disassociated from presentation. that's something i believe in wholeheartedly. but 'never assuming pronouns' is a social norm that will lead to more accidental degendering, NOT less, purely as a function of how fast the cognitive load compounds.
