Your environment sets the bar for how much you measure up against others. If your environment consists of lazy, unintelligent, reactive, nihilistic people, that is who you will have as a point of reference against how well you measure up, which can lead to complacency because having mediocre and toxic people around you doesn't provide a good blueprint of how much you can achieve in life. You could be the smartest people in a room of unintelligent people, and be below average in a room full of intellectuals. Being around the mediocre breeds mediocrity.
If you truly want to advance in life you need to change your surroundings and only associate yourself with people who show mastery in whatever quality, title, or trait you wish to embody. Only by seeing others doing better than yourself can your eyes be opened to the possibilities of this world, and if you are an intuitive learner, you can take this to your advantage to learn from and emulate the success of those who have achieved more in life.
If you have the ability to leave the room, end the conversation or avoid the gossip go ahead and do that.
It's not worth ruining your vibe, spending your energy and damaging your reputation to trash talk others or getting involved in situations that don't bring you any benefit.
Don't forget to drink water and mind your business. The drama is not worth your peace. Let it go.
“The way you treat yourself is the standard you set for others.”

Honestly, my goal in life is just to be a very warm person. I want to be as loving and as kind as I can be.

Life is life–whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man’s own advantage.
