Mads eyes drift down to the front of the classroom. From his lofty vantage point on the other side of the lab he can finally get a good, unimpeded look at the figure in the white robes where he is sitting alone, straight-backed, attentive, and regal. There is nothing at all about his current demeanour that would betray the rudeness that characterised their earlier encounter. His physical features, however, are just as striking as they were the first time Mads laid eyes on him.
Jet-black hair falls in thick waves around his shoulders and frames his dusky face which boasts a straight but prominent nose and thin, serious, mouth which contribute to his magisterial air. Most of the authority he seems to exude though, Mads decides, comes from those blazing, amber pupils set like jewels beneath his hooded eyelids, and the intensity of his gaze: inscrutable, but lit from within by some bright, indomitable light. It isn’t the gaze of a student, he muses; it reminds him more of the gazes of those princes in the paintings from the Old Regime whose veneer of impassivity belies their formidable power: a power to command armies and bring empires to ruin with nothing more than a narrowing of their eyes or a subtle gesture of their heads.
