I’m sure all you Tumblr users have heard by now about the changes being made to Tumblr’s ecosystem so that the site can make more money. And I’m sure most of you are as uneasy as I am or, in fact, are angry about the proposed changes.

The reason they need to make more money is simple: Tumblr is $30 million USD in debt.

For this site to run and for them to pay employees, the site needs to generate revenue.

This place maybe a hellsite but it’s our hellsite. We are still here because we actually like it here. Besides, the other social media sites are crashing or will crash soon. Where else would we go?

Now, I did some research. There are at least 300 million users and over 500 million blogs. One of the cheapest things to buy on the Tumblr store is the crab package you can gift to another blog, which is $3 USD.

If each and everyone of us buys a crab package, we get to keep Tumblr alive and kicking. @oracleoutlook suggested that we make a holiday of it on July 29th. It seems to have resonated with people. Others have also asked for that to extend to August 5th, as some people don’t get paid til the beginning of the month.

Many people have already agreed to celebrate July 29th as Crab Day, a day of posting crab memes and gifting crabs to other users. And if you cannot afford to buy crabs, that is a-okay! Participate in the crab memes. Who would pass up the chance to make and reblog memes about crabs, after all?

This hellsite is ours. Let us remind them of that.

i hate the “on average a user only sees 25 posts per session so they have to be good and varied” bullshit on that staff post. if i open tumblr and the 25 posts i see are nothing but a single mutual mass reblogging their favourite thing that i couldn’t care less about. well. that’s what i enjoy

the way these strikes get framed is always so funny to me

"the strike could stretch on until the end of summer" or the execs could pay their workers

"there won't be ANY new shows because of this strike" or the execs could pay their workers

"no more content for us because the mean old writers and actors are-" OR THE EXECS COULD PAY THEIR WORKERS

don’t forget during the WGA strike that animation is not covered under the WGA deals and as a result animation has gotten the shortest possible end of the stick in under-staffing, under-paying, and generally turning the field into gig employment.

please sign the petition here for Disney to recognize animation production workers as a union and reblog this post!

your favorite youtubers and content creators are about to be offered some tantalizing tv/streaming deals so we're all about to find out who the real working class allys are

someone's gonna get cancelled doing this and they're gonna cry crocodile tears over how difficult it is to make a living as a content creator and i'm telling you right now we are NOT going to buy it, got it? scabs deserve no sympathy

just realized how many super specific mood playlists i have and i want to know if it borders on concerning :) peez vote and share for bigger pool of peeps~

So my girlfriend's girlfriend, (an Australian) and I (Murican) were talking about showers, and a bit of culture shock ensued, so now I'm making this poll. If you vote, please reblog with your answer and where you're from in the tags, I'm really curious if this is a culture thing, or if there's something else going on.

The No campaign for the Voice seems to boil down to "but what if Indigenous people say something we don't like and it's harder to ignore?" Yeah man. That's the point. Could you imagine if Indigenous people have their opinions and concerns heard? If only.

And I mean... the people pushing the “No” campaign do so well at ignoring all kinds of other marginalised voices - disabled people, queer people, people of colour of all other non-indigenous varieties, transgender people, poor people, artistic people, people who believe climate change exists, people who believe the environment isn’t just a piggy bank for the wealthy, and so on.  I mean, it’s really a tribute to the sheer POWER of indigenous voices that the people behind the “No” campaign apparently feel they won’t be able to extend their ability to ignore anyone who isn’t exactly like them to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Definitely a good reason to vote “Yes”, if only so those bastards on the “No” side get to experience what the rest of us feel like listening to them!

The other feeling I have about the vast majority of those campaigning against the Indigenous voice to Parliament is that they are the same arsehats rebranding their vote no on ‘Marriage Equality’.

Which, as a queer person raising (then) queer teens (mine, and by association, several others who weren’t out to family) was a fucking nightmare.

So, look after your Indigenous family, friends, and acquaintences. Check in. Make sure they know they are loved. Don’t let the bastards be the reason anyone else is taken from us too soon.

Some thoughts I have about the Kink at Pride discourse. I don't actually remember if I posted something like this before? Or if I meant to and didn't. God knows my brain could use a refurb.

I think the people who decry kink at Pride are misunderstanding at least one or more things. Firstly, who is Proud? Queer people. Queer people of all kinds, queer people who get singled out by mainstream culture and get beaten and killed and fired and refused jobs, marriage, kids. Queer people who were told for decades to stop being queer and to be ashamed of themselves.

This includes queer kinksters. Pride is for those people, not for the conservative Christian parent who wants clean content they deem acceptable for children -- that is telling those queer folks they should be ashamed, which is exactly what Pride is fighting.

Secondly, outfits do not equal sex. They can be sexy! They can be used to attract a partner, or just invite wishful thinking. But you know what? Young women come into my store wearing tiny short-shorts where I can see 2-3 inches of actual, round buttocks. Low-cut shirts to show off their cleavage. But these women are not cruising Target looking for sex. They are shopping. Tiny children see these women in these outfits! And yet there is no outcry that they need to cover themselves. Why? Because outfits ≠ sex. Sure, maybe some of them are hoping to attract a partner, or they could be dressed like that because it's hot. Or because they think it looks cute. But they don't get thrown out of the store for soliciting sex because of the next thing:

Nudity does not equal sex. Exposed skin does NOT mean the person baring the skin is looking for or asking for sex. Yes, we have modesty laws in the US and people can't show their genitals or female-presenting nipples in public. But AFAIK there is no law saying short-shorts have to cover the entire rounded part of the buttock, and showing off your butt doesn't mean you are hoping to get railed in the parking lot.

The US has a very strong and pervasive belief that nudity = sex, and as such nudity is taboo because sex is taboo. I think the only reason nudity is taboo is because people here think the only reason to be nude is for sex. Which is not true. But it explains why people see others dressed in outfits that occur during sexual activity and assume that if the person is in that outfit, then they are having/looking for sex. But that is not the case. Sometimes people wear those outfits for other reasons, like it's comfortable or they think it's cute, or it is what they feel like wearing while they shop for groceries.

And finally: Pride is not for everybody. It is specifically for the people who need to be Proud. Pride is not for the oppressors, it is for the oppressed. One of the things that got us oppressed was the way we like to have sex. Therefore, sex, sexual nature, sexual identity, is a part of Pride. No one is having sex on the floats in the parade. No, kissing and showing skin is not having sex.

If you don't want to see something, don't go to that event. Find another event that suits you. Not everything is about you.

Question for people who use screen readers or text to speech/audio

When a post on here has lots of emojis, special fonts/text or lots of keysmashes, what is a way to tag those posts so that you guys don't have to sit there listening to nonsense for a minute straight?

Thanks!

the best tag in my opinion would be "screenreader unsafe" !! and i would deeply appreciate things like that being tagged whenever possible , because ... it fully crashes cheaper screenreaders like mine and i have to restart it >_<

one of my favorite lotr facts is that gondorians speak sindarin as a first language and yet when faramir was talking to frodo and sam about cirith ungol he was like “we don’t know what’s in there.” like faramir. cirith ungol is sindarin for “pass of the spider.” do the math

Don’t forget that Frodo also speaks Sindarin, which makes this even worse.

Faramir: Hey, don’t go up the Spider Stairs.

Frodo: Why? What’s up the Spider Stairs?

Faramir: We don’t know, Frodo. We just don’t know.

to be fair, you’d assume the name means “there’s a lot of spiders here,” not, “there is one spider the size of a draft horse here.” so you go up expecting to have to shoo a lot of skeeter eaters out of your tent, and instead you have to figure out how to rope and shoe godzillarantula.

Hmmm…

They do live in a world where godzillarantulas feature prominently in mythology and history (Ungoliant plunged the world into darkness, scared the crap out of Sauron’s old boss, etc) and existed within the last century in Mirkwood. Assuming they ever talk to anyone who’s been to Mirkwood. They… probably know they were giant spiders in Mirkwood pretty recently? It’s hard to figure out how much anyone in Middle-earth has been talking to anyone else when we didn’t actually see it.

On the other hand – what if it’s the giant evil spiders’ prominence in history/mythology that’s causing trouble? What if lots of evil/nasty things/places get called “spider” just to indicate how nasty and evil they are, rather than any association with literal spiders, and it’s just… overloaded? Maybe the bad part of town in Minas Tirith is the Spider District. Maybe every tavern trying to be edgy calls itself the Spiderweb.

Actually spider/Ungoliant references could be really appealing to Gondorians trying to be edgy. They’re dark and evil! Plunged the world into darkness! But they AREN’T involved in the war they’re actually fighting, they aren’t directly associated with Sauron at all, so getting too interested in them would be creepy without being potentially treasonous. Because no one’s ACTUALLY going to worship those dangerous but not epic spiders up in Mirkwood, and no one’s heard anything from any proper spawn of Ungoliant in ages and ages.

In fact, spider/Ungoliant references might be appealing to ORCS trying to express that something is nasty and creepy! Nobody likes Ungoliant.

Maybe Faramir’s been to fourteen different Spider Caves across Ithilien, and half of them he didn’t even see regular spiders in, they’re just dark and damp and may have had orcs at some point, or something, and at some point in history someone got spooked. So you know, it’s POSSIBLE Spider Pass has something to do with spiders? But really it just means people don’t like it.

(The problem with this theory is we never actually SAW anyone overusing spider references. But it’s plausible they would!)

“The average spider on Middle Earth is the size of a dinner plate” is a statistical error. The average spider on Middle Earth is smaller than a coin. Cirith Ungol (lit: Spiders Gorge), which contains a spider larger than a horse, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

OH MY GOD

Come for the Tolkien linguistics, stay for the Spiders Georg reference

this map, by jonathan hull, shows all the places in the USA named after the devil or hell. assuming big giant awful spiders were a common thing in middle earth, it’s likely that there were a shit ton of Spider Stairways

you don’t wander into Devil’s Lick assuming that satan himself is gonna give you a rimjob. you presumably also don’t head up Spider Stairs assuming an arachnid the size of a cottage is gonna try and eat your friend.

happy independence day let’s impeach the president

The only 4th of july post i care about

I can top it: yesterday, NPR made a series of tweets that Trump supporters called “propaganda” and “trash words” to insult Trump and push NPR’s agenda.

NPR was tweeting the Declaration of Independence.

And that, folks, describes about 75% of Trump’s voter base.

Some exammples of the Trump followers vs NPR thing

This makes me so happy. I mean, it’s the Trump supporters themselves who think their guy fits the description of the despot we kicked out of our nation. I mean…

hey fellow artists / creators, if you’re also on twitter there’s an account on there people are using to turn tweets [and by proxy, the art in those tweets] into crypto / NFT that I strongly recommend yall block

some asshat pinged it on a commission I did for a client. I’m not fuckin happy that someone tried to steal my damn art, that someone else paid to have done of THEIR character no less.

[ screenshots below from this tweet ]

if you’re looking at this post wondering just WHAT an NFT is:

it’s art theft. it’s literally just art theft.

Anonymous asked:

Y'know, I'm not saying JK Rowling is perfect, but the Hogwarts Game is more than just about her. It's a game for the fans! It's supporting game devs! And the money isn't even going to her anyway.

  1. "Jk Rowling isn't perfect" sure is a weird way to say "Jk rowling is a billionaire using her inconceivable wealth and social capital to fund and support openly white supremacist and anti-trans organisations."
  2. "It's for the fans," except the antisemitic caricatures and storylines in the game (in the very least) excludes Jewish fans.
  3. "It's supporting game Devs." game Devs are not paid by royalties. they're contracted, usually, to develop a game for a one off payment or salary. Game Devs rarely receive royalties or profit from sales., one of the many reasons the industry is experiencing one of the largest unionisation movements in history. Avalanche Software, the company behind Hogwarts Legacy, is currently not unionised which means the developers will not receive a cent made from sales of the game.
  4. "the money isn't even going to her anyway". babe, copyright and licensing laws dictate that ANYTHING using official Harry Potter concepts on a mass scale for profit must pay a licensing fee to JK Rowling because she is the copyright holder. Unless you are buying hp related stuff second hand or fan made, you are putting money back into JKs pocket.

Jk rowling has stated that she considers any support, financial or otherwise, for her work as support of her beliefs. Play the game and justify it to yourself however the fuck you want to, but no amount of lying to yourself will change that supporting this game is providing financial and social support to someone who is actively using that support to harm some of the most vulnerable people in society. next time, just admit you care more about your own enjoyment of a video game than you do about actually being an ally to people less privileged than you and stay out of trans people's inboxes.

Honestly if anyone tries to tell you the racism and antisemitic overtones in the Harry Potter books were accidental, remind them she is a fan of Matt Walsh.

As in, Matt “women are most fertile at 16 and teen pregnancy is only an issue because men aren’t responsible enough to marry them” Walsh.

Matt “abortion is evil and arranged marriage is great” Walsh.

Matt “besties with Ben Shapiro and part of alt right news site The Daily Wire” Walsh.

That guy.

JKR isn’t a feminist. She isn’t even a lib. She’s an alt-right Tory.

The film she’s referring to is Matt Walsh’s “What Is A Woman” which if you’re so unlucky you may have seen trailers of the past couple years on YouTube. It’s more or less just him asking queer people to define what it means to be a woman and getting mad at the answers they give before cutting to him narrating why this is delusional nonsense destroying western society or whatever. The whole thing is predictably disingenuous as you may expect, but what’s most important here is this:

“What Is A Woman” is a film you can watch only on the daily wire’s website, and (at least at the time these tweets were made) was only viewable if you were a paying subscriber.

Let me say that again with emphasis,

JKR is, or has been, subscribed to at least one alt-right propaganda site.

You don’t just accidentally stumble upon that, and even if you did, you wouldn’t stay there long enough to pay them money if you were a feminist because half the weirdos who post on the daily wire post anti-feminist garbage, and I’m not even just talking about the forced birth whining or whatever, Brett Cooper has stated before that she would rather lose her right to vote than lose the right to own firearms. Ben Shapiro is a rampant slut shamer. Jordan Peterson spews incel rhetoric CONSTANTLY.

So can we, if but for a moment, stop pretending the ONLY criticism of JKR is that she’s transphobic. It’s not. It isn’t. This isn’t even the only alt-right creep she’s on friendly terms or even openly a fan of. If you want a full commentary on JKR flirting with the alt-right, there’s a video here with screen shots and such. Most if not all of the tweets are still up if you want to verify that this guy didn’t just make them in photoshop.

And if you want some specific examples of the blatant racism, fatphobia, pro-authoritarian, transphobia, homophobia, and good old fashioned misogyny in the Harry Potter books that you can point to the next time a TERF starts a tirade about how JKR is actually GIRLBOSS FEMINIST or whatever to remind them that she isn’t JUST transphobic, there is a very long and extensive video that covers the basics so you don’t have to re-read all of the books just to prove to yourself you didn’t imagine all of that bigotry.

I was actually going to make a compilation of all of this myself before I happened upon these videos in my recommended list on YouTube, I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth here.

kangaroo: (sees creature descend from the sky with a single giant multicoloured wing)

kangaroo: oh i am going to absolutely kick the shit out of that.

Obsessed with the way the kangaroo runs straight at them and attacks like a hostile mob in a survival game
