i hear the laugh of someone i love, i find god. the setting sun fills my room, i find god. i eat fresh strawberries off the vine, i find god. someone rests their head on my shoulder, i find god.

Pssst

Hey, are you an artist or writer with WIPs?

Come here... I got a secret for you pssst come ‘ere

Avatar

waiting in deep suspense

Psst you ready here comes the secret

Here it comes

I am also very curious about this secret

Your time spent enjoying the creative process is infinitely more valuable that any final project you create. So stop putting yourself down for never finishing or posting those WIPs because every moment you spent creating something you loved is a moment not wasted. Your progress and talent is measured by your passion not your number of posts.

This post went from 3k to 7k overnight and that just goes to show how many of you need to hear this so make sure you don’t ever forget it

Commenting fanfiction is the easiest thing in the world once you start doing it.

I leave a comment on every single fic I read. Sometimes when I read published books I go and leave a comment somewhere the author can find it. Granted, I literally majored in ‘leaving comments on fics’ (English Education), but once you start doing it it just becomes second nature. Now you’re gonna go to the Ozymandias school of leaving comments:

Problem: I can’t leave kudos again.

Beginner: This is a second/third/fourth Kudos
Advanced: This is my second/third/fortieth time reading this, I still love it so much. Here are a few new things I noticed. I like the way you personally do x, y, z compared to other authors I’ve read (in this ship/genre/fandom).

Problem: I don’t know what to say :(

Beginner: Just list what you did to read this fic. “I stayed up late reading this”, “I read this on a crowded train”, “this kept me company while sick”.
Advanced: X,Y,Z parts made me get butterflies, and I had a physical reaction to this part of the story, I squealed outloud when characters did x,y,z. I blushed at this part. I laughed out loud here. Whatever.

Problem: I’m embarrassed to leave a comment (what if I annoy the author?)

Beginner: Short answer: you won’t EVER annoy the author (unless you’re needlessly mean) But to start, be generic, you don’t have to spill your soul in the comments section. “I liked this” “I enjoyed reading this” “nice fic”.
Advanced: This really meant a lot to me that you wrote this. This is something I feel like I’ve always wanted to read. This fic hit me in all the right places. Etc.

Problem: I don’t know how to express myself/my experience

Beginner: My beginners go to is to highlight a line, put that in your comment and say “i liked this” or to identify basic emotions you had while reading and comment those “this made me happy” “this part made me sad” “i almost cried” “you made me laugh”  Advanced: “Highlighted line” This line made me smile because it has to do with character development/it’s really romantic/it’s so unique/it’s moving. Sometimes I don’t highlight a line at all, I just talk about the stuff I’ve noticed were unique to the fic. “I love the way you did this particular thing with this character”.

This? This is an amazing post. This is the Captain Awkward of commenting posts—it addresses all your fears directly and gives you actionable scripts for each one.

Hey! Some of this can apply to responding to works on writeblr, too! Wonderful advice for if you’re stuck on a comment but you really want to leave one (and you should, if you can!).

Fandom PSAs

Dont’ Like, Don’t Read

or DL; DR

  • You are responsible for curating your own online experience.
  • If something upsets you, makes you angry or queasy or triggers you, stop reading/looking at it. Avoid things that might make you feel that way.
  • Learn to use the Sort and Filter function on AO3, especially the Exclude tools.
  • On social media, block and mute accounts / tags / words when necessary.
  • If you hated something, you don’t need to tell that to the creator or start pointing fingers at them publicly.
  • The Back button is free. Use it.

Addendum:

Yes, for this to work, creators need to tag their works accordingly, so that people know what sort of content they are about to engage with and can nope out if necessary.

I will probably make another PSA about the importance of proper tagging later.

Ship And Let Ship

or SALS

  • You are allowed to ship whatever you want.
  • Everyone else is also allowed to ship whatever they want.
  • You are entitled to dislike or even hate a ship. If you want to do this online, in public, don’t use the ship tags for hate posts.
  • If you see someone posting about a ship they like and you don’t, there is no need for you to start arguing with them in their replies / comments / QRTs / reblogs. Don’t throw your hate in their face.
  • Do not harass fan creators or fans for shipping something you disapprove.
  • All of this also applies to liking / disliking an individual character.

Addendum:

”I agree with this, except when…”

No, then you are NOT agreeing with this.

Let me make this VERY clear. There are NO exceptions. None.

You don’t EVER harass real people over pixels.

If you disagree with this, kindly block and move on.

Your Kink Is Not My Kink

or YKINMK / YKINMKATO

  • The longer version is ”Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That’s Okay”.
  • People have different tastes. Not everything is for everybody.
  • Even if you don’t like a specific kink, other people are still allowed to use it in their creations.
  • You are entitled to dislike kinky content and think that it’s ”weird”.
  • Don’t kink shame or judge people based on their kinks.
  • This goes both ways: your kink is not someone else’s kink, so don’t push it onto those who are not into it.

Be Kind

or Don’t Be An Asshole

  • Focus on the things you like instead of the things you hate.
  • Create and unite instead of destroying and dividing.
  • Don’t harass real people over fictional things.
  • Stop stirring up petty drama just to get some attention on social media.
  • Stop trying to ”win”. Fandom is not a competition.
  • Remember that your own experiences aren’t universally shared. Your perception of things can differ from someone else’s, but that doesn’t mean either of you is necessarily wrong.

the hardest lines ALWAYS come from fanfics and I stand by this

(credit to the authors!! I can't remember where exactly they all came from but if u recognise their work pls tag them :) they deserve way more recognition!!)

- JUST REDISCOVERED some of them are from The Art Of Burning by hella1975 which is an EXTREMELY amazing ongoing atla rewrite/canon divergence fic following zuko (also zukka but it hasn't quite happened yet) and everyone should read it - numbers 3, 4,5 and 9 to be exact

-The klance one is from either Just static by Jessadilla or never saw you coming by dimpleforyourthoughts (both are masterpieces)

- The batman one is from Nature and Nurture by lurkinglurkerwholurks

- number 7 is a merthur fic called tell me every terrible thing you ever did (and let me love you anyway) by Stardustwrites17

With the announcement of the Harry Potter TV series, you will be made aware of the people in your social circle who are excited about it.

Now is a good time to stop knowing them.

The play here is fairly blatant.

  1. Hire new 12 year olds that haven’t condemned JK Rowling’s horrendous views
  2. Aggressively condemn the inevitable people who say shit about said 12 year olds online to take the moral high ground
  3. Turn it into a show that people hate watch for maximum revenue
Avatar

Friendly reminder that JK Rowling is the executive producer for this show. So in addition to benefiting monetarily from its very existence, she will be an active participant in creating its narrative. I won't be watching it and I encourage everyone else to ignore its existence as well.

I agree with all of the above. One thousand percent.

BUT DOES THAT MEAN WE BOTHER THE CHILDREN HIRED TO BE IN THIS? NO. NO. WE DO NOT.

Child actors are not autonomous beings with the privilege of having full independence to make their own decisions, nor can they be expected to make careful and informed choices or comments in the press.

They will have many adults influencing or controlling or their decisions and their livelihoods.

These children will also not likely have the money to make full and luxurious choices in their careers, their lives, or their family expectations. Years of learning what life is like for most child actors has proven this. Memories of BEING children should allow you to cut them some slack because they are children and that is a complex place to inhabit.

WE CAN HATE JKR AND THAT'S FINE! Great even!! Have fun! Have a go at the adults who are making this show on purpose with her! They are grown adults making terrible choices!

DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO THIS SHOW. DO NOT "HATE WATCH" DO NOT USE ANY HASHTAGS RELATED TO THE SHOW THAT ARE PROMOTED BY THE COMPANIES BEHIND THIS. DO NOT FALL FOR THE MARKETING.

BUT: WE DO NOT BULLY CHILDREN.
