by far my biggest pet peeve in the gone series fandom is the shocking amount of ppl that will go “yeahhh drake is my favourite character!❤️❤️💕” then turn around n say “hmm idk i just think astrid/diana/lana etc is annoying😕”
like WHY. why do you think they r annoying but not the character thats openly ableist and misogynistic and guilty of SO much worse ?? give me one thing any of the female protag characters in this series have done thats worse than anything hes done
100% agree with all this! Drake was such an intense and frightening menace in the first couple of books, but after mg basically gave him immortality he honestly became a hinderance to the story in that his presence was just simply not needed.
I always maintain the belief that Drake’s character could’ve been the perfect opportunity for an in-depth exploration into the ways masculine insecurity and male fragility can lead vulnerable young men down the path of committing extreme acts of violence towards women. But post-Lies, his whole personality just became “I hate women” with little coherent reason given as to why that was. For me at least, his motivations are ambiguous at best.
Not to make this about Penny (because I definitely have a tendency to do that when it comes to anything gone series-related lol), but Penny is an example of a villain whose actions and behaviours are actually cohesively tied to her experiences with gender. Her childhood experiences with sexual assault at the hands of a male caretaker motivate her villainy in a way that comes across as clear and understandable. So if Michael Grant could do it with Penny (who appeared in three books and only became a major villain in one), why couldn’t he do it with Drake (who is a major villain in all six books of the main series)? Drake’s justification for his misogyny didn’t need to sympathetic, it just needed to be clear and understandable.
