Portfolio advice, from a lead who hires Concept Artists

(This was originally a twitter thread I wrote before the site self imolated, hense it's strange structure.) I wrote this after a weekend of portfolio reviews - 1. Like a maths exam, please please show your working. I want to see thumbs options, mid options and of course a final design.

2. Arrange your portfolio, I don't want to bounce about between subject matter and pipeline. Your portfolio's narrative should be as strong as your work... 3. Please make worlds that excite the viewer, make them want to go in and explore them, explain to them the interesting parts of the town, or the way the character's hat unfolds. How will this draw the viewer in? 4. As I've said before the majority of your project work is explanatory not mood, make sure your portfolio contains explanatory work. Explained here -

5. A lot of beautiful post apocolyptic paintings, , but 80% of realistic games and film, we just give the environment artists photo ref, they are capable artists in their own right. Different work in stylised where you do need to create rules for how things can be translated. 6. Production art contains call out sheets, material references and flat graphics. This doesn't have to be your final image, but it should support it.

7. Design characters on a swatch(es) of the environment they will be viewed in. Not on white. I make swatch backgrounds from screenshots, it avoids assumptions that damage readability. 8. Reverse of this, put people in your environments, show me the scale.

9. It's not a deal breaker for a review, but if you intend to get a job, please show me your work on a screen larger than a smartphone (print outs probably the cheapest option with the best battery life). 10. Please have your contact details clearly visible, and by that I mean email address, I will not pass your social media contact on, I cannot input your form into my tracking system. EMAIL ADDRESS emblazoned and bake it in, sometimes recruiters do funky stuff to pdfs

11. Your portfolio will never feel done, not to you anyway. You will have learnt from your latest pieces and want to apply it to older work. But we know art is a journey. Send your portfolio anyway. I've been in the industry 10+ years and my portfolio is still not 'finished'. 12. If you are applying to an environment centric Concept Art position then please vary your times of day! Golden hour is cool but show me some happy sunny days, looming overcast days, what about at night? Vary your weather too! Sunny snowy day? Rainy Spring day? Stormy night?

13. If you are applying for a character centric Concept Art role then please ensure your portfolio shows a variety of body types and ethnicities. 14. Designing characters for games? Please show back views and feet (!) Many potfolios contain only front views. This is a problem because:

  1. You haven't shown you are considering the design from all angles.
  2. In many games rear view is the main view.
  3. Stop cropping feet.

15. If you are entry / graduating and looking at Portfolios to compare content and standard of yr own work too, look at hired grad/junior artists as opposed to seniors Seniors and leads often have old or personal work in their portfolio which isnt representative of the day job. 16a. Show clearly the intended use case for your Concept Art. Mention the game type in the description. Are these player character designs for a 3rd person adventure game? Then more back views please. Bonus points for diagetic ways of showing health / equipment / role etc.

16b. Are these designs for an FPS? Then really the player view of the gun needs to sell the player style/ choices, in an FPS your weapons are almost your character. Are these world designs? What's the view distance? For an RTS your shapes need to read from above & a distance. 16c. The lack of clarification means I am judging the design in isolation, which both harms the design (you might be considering the backview of a char as the main adventure character.) Or an NPC, their waist up expressions may be important for conveying exposition and mechanics.

16d. Concept art is not separate from gameplay, great concept art serves the game team before it is a good illustration.

17. Play games. A variety of games. Think about them. IMO to be a good concept artist you need to understand the common language & references used by your peers. Also understand the principles and common language your audience are used to. FPS design rules are v.diff from RTS.

18. There are many skills that are needed in concept art, please show them. For example: Graphic design - logos, liveries, typographic use etc. VFX concepts - Abilities, Ambience, motion concepts. Architectural knowledge - How buildings are built! & more but I'm out of space :O

Hey when you move out on your own the most important food tip I can give you is “maybe you don’t hate x maybe your guardians just cooked it wrong”

The number of foods I have learned I really like if they’re Fucking Seasoned

The number of foods I’ve introduced friends to that they warned me they’d always hated til I let them try a piece of mine

Also marinade things for 24 hours the second you have your own fridge it is a GAME CHANGER you thought you knew food but you have never met her

Oh absolutely

Steamed diced carrots? Hell no

Seared and peppered carrot spears with bell pepper slices and then with a little bit of butter drizzle? I suddenly love carrots and I'm also eating a SECOND vegetable, its a fucking miracle

Oooh yes also every squash EVER tastes 90% better if you roast it with garlic and roasted red pepper seasoning and just a tiny drizzle of honey

If you're low on spoons or just don't want to stand around with a hot pan, pretty much every vegetable ever is delicious oven roasted, and it takes very little effort, just some time.

One of my go-tos when I need to feed myself but I don't have the brain capacity to do much is to get a pack of frozen veggies and put them on a baking paper covered tray, drizzle with some oil, salt and pepper, and roast until soft. 20-30 min on 220 C/ 425 F will usually do, shorter for small veg.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, pour in equal amounts of couscous and boiling water. Add some salt and pepper here, too. Cover.

Once the roasted vegetables are done, put them in the bowl with the couscous. Put some sauce on if you have some. Just some oil works fine, too.

Eat. You've made a meal that is minimal work, just some time while the oven did its thing.

(If you have some more spoons in you, do the same but also boil some pasta. Add the veggies to the pasta with some pasta sauce from a jar. Nice and tasty.)

Ooh yes

I’m also gonna add my favourite minimum effort thing which is basic as hell but important:

You put some dairy in a potato, you have a nutritionally complete meal

Bake a potato (1 hour in oven 400F, far superior to 10 minutes in microwave), dump butter, sour cream, cheese in it, you have the least effort meal of all but you’ve got everything your body needs

You can spice with anything you like, but get some protein, calcium, and vitamin A in there from a cheese of any variety and it will take care of you

A potato about the size of your fist will fill your stomach without stretching they’re not side dishes it’s a full meal and you can mix things up with all kinds of additions it’s the food that gets me through IBS flares

If you have texture problems more than the taste

You would be surprised how many more vegetables are edible when cut

And or are newer or older (depending on if you like it sifter or harder)

Oh yes. I’ve seen people saying that if it’s texture you’re just screwed, but I promise you might not be

You will have to look harder for recipes, and pay special attention to texture, but there is a world of difference between a roasted carrot and a steamed carrot

Or a ripe banana and a slightly green banana and an overripe banana

It’s just as true for other plants, your key phrases to avoid like the plague or try are things like “caramelize” (cook til gooey), “crust” (crunchy outside), “fork tender” (just soft enough to stab) since they describe the texture you’re going for

There might be no sweet spot, and you don’t have to try a single thing you don’t want to - that’s the best part! But if something catches your eye and you can afford a lil time, energy, and cash?

You an adult now. No one can stop you or make you finish it if it still sucks.

General rule of thumb: if you cannot do boiled or mush textures, try frying or roasting, maybe cook it 2-5 minutes less than recommended if it’s safe to eat a lil under

Also, for soup, put it in a blender. I fucking loathe celery texture but I can have it in soup with joy and satisfaction once it’s baby food

I have texture trouble with most grains aside from softer rices and I don’t really try new things when it comes to veggies (tomatoes, peppers, most beans). Do you have any suggestions on how to incorporate thinks like pan-fried zucchini, squashes, corn, and most basic fruits (aside from orange and peach) into meals? I know it’s super specific so don’t feel like you have to answer, just asking in case!

Honestly, I have always just had corn on the same plate and gone to town with the fork to make improv bites. (I cannot have every bite the same I need to mix it up)

Using the same seasonings or complimentary ones will help make it taste like a cohesive dish, so if you do something like a roasted squash and chicken, hitting them both with salt, pepper, roasted red pepper and garlic, they’ll build so right

Sauces can be a good bridge too, especially if it goes well with all your components

Pan frying adds options like cooking your veggies in the same pan, and for zucchini especially you can cook a meat and then do the zucchini in the juices while the meat rests real fast. I dunno how well the other meat substitutes juice, but tofu really doesn’t so it won’t be as impactful

For veggies that need a little longer to cook like onions, you can start with those, then cook a meat or tofu in with them to let those flavours boost each other

Softer rices are a good base if you cut your veggies and fruits nice and small so they’re bite sized (and I do usually see dried fruits in with rice, especially if it’s a savoury so dried apricots? Always worth it)

We actually made a Dragon Age spaghetti squash recipe this year that was fucking INCREDIBLE and has a rather different texture from regular spaghetti that I cannot explain well so squashes can be a good baseline too for a meal

You can mash butternut squash like a potato but honestly it does its best work diced and roasted with garam masala and a lil extra garlic salt

Oh shit super important: squashes are not interchangeable. Check which you got, a pumpkin does not work like a zucchini

It’s gonna be squash season soon in the Northern hemisphere and they last real well through the winter so The Time Is Coming. They make great soups, all good when roasted, but some you can get wild with like spaghetti squash

You can also bake or roast a lot of fruit for an easy dessert if you’ve oven cooked the rest of the meal, just switch the temperature if required and foil wrap an apple or a banana and toss that in while you eat, then hit it with cinnamon sugar or chocolate chips as a little treat

Fruit salad is bomb as hell if you’re looking to get more fruit in ya in the summer, every couple years I crave apricots and do a stone fruit summer salad with plums, nectarines, peaches, apricots, apples, strawberries, whatever else I can get cheap and looks good in the grocery store

This year we did it with a nice red dragonfruit and holy shit dragonfruit and apple? Magical. Dragonfruit and plums? Divine

Having any fruit precut makes it so much easier to eat in general, just hit it with the tiniest squirt of lemon juice to keep it fresh and not browning and stick a big bowl in the fridge, it goes with everything

Honestly just take things you already know you like and play around with them a little, maybe cook them differently or add spices and see how they go with meals you already enjoy

There’s no wrong way to have a meal so long as you won’t catch a food borne illness, make it tasty and filling and you have won

masked chimes au master post

(by boatem, convex-solos and me)

[convex centric superhero au where everyone other than joe hills suffers, is evil or both]

[disclaimer: this au is divided into 3 acts, as far as act 1 is kept light-hearted, act 2 and 3 bring up dark topics (manipulation, strong violence, death unhealthy relationships, etc.) so if it's not your jam, proceed with caution! or don't proceed at all]

[it also has elements of shipping (cubscar, bigren, biggri, solidaritimes) so, keep that in mind]

[also grian uses she/her. cause why the hell not]

designs (so far):

Idk if you’ve talked about Joe’s part in the masked chimes au but I would love to know what his part in the au is :P

i apologize for the EXTREMELY late response to this, i am quite not very good at answering these

Joe is your typical comedic relief, protected by plot armor type of character, the whole world could be on fire and they'd leave unscathed

The main premise is that he gets targeted by Jingler and Jangler (in act 2) but always seems to survive any of their attempts, they finally decide to approach him and the guy's convinced that all that they're doing is only some form of an intricate performance (i mean, why do they need their suits to look like that) Cub finds that extremely funny meanwhile it all is a sort of performance for Scar

Convex find Joe so intriguing she kind of becomes their buddy (only as Jingler and Jangler, she doesn't know their identities), we like to think she'd go around live streaming/recording them deathly convinced they're just really good actors

So basically, it's your silly character that can't and won't die

(also he's of course best friends with Cleo, could never separate them)
