To me supernatural isn’t a show but a tumblr event that appears every few months, pops off some great memes and then disappears back into the abyss
I can't sleep, so of course my brain is shouting about a crackfic premise:
The Supreme Court is hearing whether or not Steve Rogers can run for president of the USA. The Constitution states you need to be 35 years old to run. He's only 32 in terms of years awake and functionally alive, but his birth certificate says he's 98.
It was a state Attorney General that argued he couldn't run. A judge ruled he could. That judge got overturned on appeal.
Meanwhile Steve didn't even want to run in the first place, but now he wants to win because if he loses there are potential impacts for people who have experienced comas having that time discounted from their ages.
Do you like Bug Hunter and DeepBlueInk...
Surprise!
using the word "angel" as a term of endearment actually took hold because enough people heard Crowley call Aziraphale that, and they wanted to show as much depth of emotion to their own lovers as Crowley had for his "angel"
As someone who volunteers for a website whose userbase has had their fair share of meltdowns over design changes big and small over the years, I find all the hate directed @ staff incredibly upsetting to see.
I don't mean the "I hate the new layout" posts, you can hate the new layout (I use the iOS app pretty much exclusively, which works fine for me), but I just saw a post on my dash that had four copies of an image with the words "I WILL KILL YOU" in it, and called @ staff "YOU STUPID BASTARDS", and apparently people think this is okay? It had 11k notes?
This is literally a free website you're using, for free, to upload and look at tons of media, which costs money, and there are real people trying to keep it alive somehow, who aren't actually out to get you? From all I've seen, they're listening to feedback, and trying to balance the quirky fun side of Tumblr with the cold hard reality of needing to make money. They're also real human beings, Jesus fucking Christ.
Begging you all to take a deep breath before pinging @ staff in your all-caps rants, and then not. Also please don't send death threats or yell at support; the people directly dealing with users are usually not responsible for design changes.
this is just and idle thought but it popped into my head, so now it's popping onto my tumblr:
Have reading habits of fanfiction mirrored streaming habits of series? by which I mean, as binge watching entire seasons became more and more common, did fic readers (when taken as a whole) start to show a marked preference for reading completed works instead of WIPs?
I have no way of answering this question, but if anyone out there is in acafandom or enjoys fandom statistical analysis, have yourself an idea to chew on.
I'm probably gonna get yelled at for saying this but sometimes something isn't a real problem in fandom, you just learned a Japanese word describing a general fandom practice and got scared and decided it meant "The Bad Ones" of that practice
Whenever you see someone being like "we don't mind when women enjoy or even create m/m content, we just hate fujoshis" you are being racist. If you mean "I hate the way some female fans treat gay men like fetish objects" then say that, and we can have a conversation based on that, but "fujoshi" is, I cannot stress this enough, just a word for any woman who likes M/M content, for better or worse. It may have started out as a reclaimed insult (by the way, the insult was based on "liking gay shit makes you perverted and sinful," not "please respect the humanity of gay men") but it does not make a distinction between The Good Ones and The Bad Ones. You just decided to No True Scotsman it and that the English word for that should describe The Good Ones and the Japanese word for it should describe The Bad Ones
Same goes for the people I saw just the other day whose discord server explicitly disallowed "Yaoi" but said that M/M content was allowed. What they meant was "M/M content is allowed as long as it isn't pornographic and fetishistic." What they actually said was "M/M content is allowed, but M/M content is strictly forbidden," and expected you to understand that the Japan-Adjacent term has porn/fetish connotations while the English-language term for THE SAME THING refers to the "normal, non-perverted" version.
It'd be like if you used the word "cartoons" to refer to all Family-Friendly animation, regardless of style or country of origin, whether it's Japanese or American or French or whatever, and used the term "anime" to refer to all animated pornography regardless of style or country of origin. There's plenty of animated pornography that isn't Japanese! There's plenty of anime that's not pornographic! But this is the sort of thing you do when you say shit like "obviously women can read stories about gay men, but NO FUJOSHIS"
THANK YOU
i don’t do fandom these days—in large part because so many people can’t behave and do shit like this—but anti-asian racism AND sex negativity has surged high in original m/m comics and literature too and it’s super creepy to see coming from self-professed progressives
I really enjoyed the concept of Crab Day, and I'd love to keep it going, but I think we should tie the celebration to tumblr holidays.
It's easy enough to suggest Blazing a post or two on 4/20 (20th April for those who note dates that way), but what about making Nov. 10th Checkmark Day? That's the day tumblr launched the checkmarks to make fun of what Elon was doing to Twitter.
Or make August 18th (original post) or November 18th (date the movie poster was added) Goncharov Day and buy or gift the Goncharov Enthusiast badge.
We could probably petition to get a knife badge for the Ides of March and who knows what else?
The debate will continue to rage about whether or not to give tumblr money, but for those of us who decide we want to, let's have fun with it.
Hello, crab fans. Wow, you have been having a busy time! On July 29, also known as Crabs Day, you took to TumblrMart to give the gift of crabs to your pals. And boy, did we notice—not just all the great crab memes and trending posts on the day but also the burst in sales which made up a substantial financial boost to the running costs at Tumblr. And it truly took our breath away.
We got so excited we went back to the drawing board and designed some crab checkmarks, which we teased by dressing your regular checkmarks up as crabs on the day. On August 1, we launched a regular little crab checkmark and a rainbow crab checkmark for gifting and treating yourselves.
Here are some stats from Crabs Day:
- You gifted 8k crabs that day. That’s an almost 20k% increase in crab sales.
- We saw a more than 7k% increase in total Tumblrmart sales.
All this money goes straight back into running costs—such as a month’s worth of power costs for Tumblr application servers. That’s all you! You’re doing that! You’re keeping Tumblr around with your generosity toward your friends. Crabs be thanking ye ❤
it's a small world. linked in just recommended me a post from someone I was friends with in undergrad, and he's interviewing one of my old fandom besties. wtf. two worlds collide.
45 people that I used to work with got laid off today. If I hadn't changed departments back in January, I probably would have been one of them.
But I don't feel safe at all in my current role. I wasn't expecting to have to deal with being laid off til November, but I guess it's time to write a new resume and see if I can find a new job.
@matetikus kalandjai
the full video!
hi i hope it's okay that i do some excited shouting off your reblog since it's got the full video linked. to everyone in the notes asking:
I HAVE GREAT NEWS FOR YOU, BECAUSE IT IS BY THE SAME GUY!
allow me to direct you directly to Alan Becker's youtube channel right HERE
(and a quick shoutout to those of you who already knew <3)
HOWEVER!
I SEE YOU IN THE TAGS! and i can promise you that the stuff Alan Becker is making TO THIS DAY is even better than the videos you remember from 15+ years ago! (that's how long he's been around! isn't that wild?)
i'm almost certain everybody remembers - or has heard of - the original animator vs. animation, which went viral back in 2006, or maybe you remember watching the third installment of the series in 2011, with these two:
nostalgia at its finest, genuinely! but did you know that there's a fourth Animator Vs. Animation? i'm sure you recognize this orange fella (he's the one in the math video!) or maybe his friends from 2014?
but hey - did you know that there's a fifth installment? and that it looks like THIS?
i just cannot stress enough how far the realm of stickfight animations has come in these past years - and Animation Vs. Math is truly just the tip of the iceberg for Alan's content.
THERE'S EVEN A SIXTH INSTALLMENT. THE FIRST EPISODE (yes, the first episode) JUST RELEASED A FEW MONTHS AGO. LOOK AT HOW INCREDIBLE THIS IS!!! and this is just a small snippet!!
(full credit for these beautiful gifs goes to my beloved @chosec <333)
and as if that wasn't enough - over sixteen years of incredibly ground-breaking animation done by a team of dozens of wonderfully talented artists - there's even more.
do you remember this?
this is a screenshot from Animation Vs. Minecraft, and to this date, it is the most viewed Minecraft video on Youtube. that's not an exaggeration - since 2015, this one video has accumulated over 316 million views. odds are high that if you've watched any Minecraft content over the past 7 years, you've probably seen this video at least once. and y'know what's crazy?
the series never ended.
there are three full seasons of Animation Vs. Minecraft, and i'm not exaggerating when i say that the sheer amount of storytelling that is put into these little stickfigures as they explore the block game that everyone knows and loves is unbelievable. i've spent the past year dragging everyone i know into it. the full series is a 4 1/2 hour epic, steadily increasing in animation quality over the years its been in the works, building up to stunning conclusion with its own original music score that makes me cry. it's amazing.
here's some links to my personal playlists, organized and updated in chronological order:
- the Speedrun playlist (for quick binge watching, my personal favorite for first-time watchers)
- the 100% Run playlist (best for shorter watch sessions, with some added bonus content in the form of Shorts (not necessary to enjoy the full story, but fun to watch regardless))
if there's any sort of small-studio/team animation you want to watch and support - i cannot recommend Alan Becker's work enough. there's found family, there's cool action scenes, there's deeply heartfelt moments, all portrayed with the bare minimum of dialogue - and it's set in a delightfully unique medium full of charm that Alan and his team have maintained to this day.
and please come chat with me over on @sec-one if you have any questions! or just want to gush about how cool these stick guys are! i know i'm going to stick around (lmao) for as long as Alan creates more stories for us to enjoy, and there's no signs of stopping anytime soon <3
There are also mini animations released on Alan Becker’s channel every Saturday! They are called Actual Shorts and are very entertaining. Give these sticks and the incredible team behind them the love they deserve!!
BTS the Afrovictorian ensemble: overskirts
I had some decisions to make. I still need to make 2 bodices
From these fabric choices, each a six yard piece.
But I also still want to make overskirts.
The overskirts take a little more than 4 yards plus an additional 2 to line the rears... hmm...
Oh no. I guess I'll have to buy more fabric. The horror.
But wait, if the backs are fully lined... that means the back can be reversible!
Okay, that works. Let's try the other one.
Wait a minute... I have 2 fronts and 2 backs... what if I made them interchangeable too?
Success!
Now I have a couple of head to toe looks!
Crab day
Tumblr please I spent all day on this let me post it
Hey so I know people are mad at Tumblr over various things at the moment. I still think there is merit in doing Crab Day today to show that the user base is a viable way for the website to make money (which it needs to do because it is a business with employees who need to be paid) and that there is value to retaining the existing user base and being responsive to our concerns and feedback.
I like it here. And sometimes there are shitty changes and sometimes there are great changes. I want to encourage the tumblr powers that be to keep working towards changes that WE want.
If crab day fails, the lesson won’t be about the interface or accessibility, because there won’t be the data to show WHY individuals didn’t participate. It will just look like people didn’t do it and that was not a way for tumblr to make money. The best way to register displeasure with changes or policy implementation is to give feedback on those things so staff clearly knows what’s making people mad. And if you don’t want to participate in crab day that’s totally 100% fine.
This is all to say that I am giving crabs today and will be a happy recipient of crabs. LMK if you want crabs.
