I had this work friend at my previous job who was gay. Lovely kid, from a kind of traditional family.

He hadn't told anyone he was gay, because he was scared of being judged. But... thanks to the resident lesbian, he was outed to everyone without his knowledge because she clocked him and asked everyone about it while he was off work.

Everyone then put the clues they'd noticed on their own together rather than what they were doing beforehand, that being remaining blissfully and politely unaware of how his variety of behaviours linked back to him being gay.

Had I already clocked him? Absolutely. But I should not have been told about him, before he chose to come out to me.

This pride month, remember that even in the most accepting of environments, even if you personally feel comfortable being out where you are, that doesnt mean someone else around you is too. Do not assume that someone is comfortable with everyone knowing, or that everyone knows.

Because we might not have known. That person might not have told us yet. We might have been politely ignoring the signs because we didn't want to assume.

It's not your place to tell everyone someone else's business.

something im noticing is the redditors are just commenting on everything via reblogs with reckless abandon. and its so funny bc thats how youre MEANT to use this fucking website but we've trained ourselves out of it somehow.

I feel like a fucking chimp raised in a lab let out into the wild and just doing shit without understanding wtf is going on because I was raised to click the button to get cookie

Honestly we could use an influx of people actually commenting. The hostility against speaking above a low mutter was starting to get kind of weird. Like yeah tag talk is great but so many of the "hello, newcomers!" posts straight up say to NEVER comment, like...what? It's making this place feel empty and quiet even though the userbase is climbing, and having that as a norm makes it so a disproportionate amount of comments are left by people who either actively want to be annoying or are socially oblivious, instead of people who...want to particulate in their community. I've definitely noticed an increase recently of people constricting discussion to tags in ways that pretty much deadend conversation, like by chattily responding to conversation starters from my tags in their own tags instead of by copying my tags and responding.

Between how super long posts don't get blockquote-constricted into invisibility anymore AND how the new site settings mean people see tags on their posts unless they go out of their way not to instead of the other way around... Why are we living like this. It's lonely! Let's talk to each other!

Forgot that we had a deep tissue massage gun and thought my partner was offering to hunt me for sport to cheer me up last night.

THIS IS SO FUNNYVJBBVHNBF?????

It took me a while to find with all the porn that pops up, but here’s the rest of it:

I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE SECOND PART!!!

people wanting men to wear crop tops and then being grossed out at happy trails. you fool thats the point of men wearing crop tops

This reminds me that some people in Slovakia want men to be "masculine" as if the traditional Detva kroj wasn't just a crop top with some neat pants

Like, look at this. Take a look.

Tell me that this guy doesn't serve. Now shut up and let boys wear whatever they want

The male kroje do not nearly get enough attention anywhere and it’s a fucking shame because these things are iconic and should be brought back to fashion yesterday

Quick reminder since apparently it bears reminding in both directions: if bigoted people, closed-minded people overall, or your own internalized insecurities misinterpret a queer person’s message in a way that hurts/endangers you, yeah, it sucks, but it’s not the fault of the queer person in question, nor should it be a reason for them to silence themselves. They’re probably as hurt/pissed as you are that someone misinterpreted and misused their message to do harm.

Of course sadly there’ll still be queer people that actually DO mean harm and dismissal to other queer people – I ain’t speaking for those and it’s not the best way to ensure their and others’ wellbeing imo. I’m just saying – not all people will be like that. That’s what I want to believe. So hopefully let’s not put everyone in the same bag, keep supporting each other, WHILE allowing each other to advocate for our own visibility, without having to self-erase or self-censor to accomodate to what haters might say.

It’ll be tougher this way, maybe, because humans seem to like to draw extreme conclusions very quick, but I don’t believe there’s any better way for us all to be alright and stay alright on the long run.

an internal memo leaked from ceo steve huffman saying the "noise" of the blackout will die out and they just need to weather it until we give up. fuck you spez.

first of all it's OVER EIGHT THOUSAND subreddits that went dark.

second of all he clearly doesn't give one single shit about the users or the UNPAID army of mods who slog through a million miles of shit every day to keep illegal and offensive content off the site (i'm a mod in a small fandom subreddit and even the shit i've seen is beyond the pale) and therefore make it appealing to the advertizers.

you have no fucking business without us. and you don't care one single bit about it.

he clearly did not mean for this memo to leak, but someone at reddit thought it was important enough to send it out anyway. please spread it (spreddit?) especially because so much of reddit is still in blackout.

This feels very similar to the uproar they LITERALLY JUST HAD in the D&D community over changes that would have negatively impacted third party creators. People started canceling their subscriptions to the paid service and Wizards of the Coast really thought they could get away with it by issuing a weak apology and waiting it out.

The community got angrier, so WotC thought they could get away with it by backing down to a half measure.

The community got even ANGRIER.

WotC ended up backing down to such an extent that they not only canceled all of the planned changes but released their core material under a creative commons license to boot, putting them BEHIND their starting position.

This is what we should be aiming for. I've used reddit daily for like fifteen years, but sometimes the only thing you can do to save a community you love is to genuinely be willing to walk away until the corporate bigwigs in charge get it through their heads that they actually NEED users. I want to make this the year of companies fucking around and finding out that unhappy users can cause them problems. Starve the bastards out and make them realize they need us more.

it’s been years since i’ve first seen this comic and i still think it has one of the best punchline delivers of anything i’ve ever seen

eternal classic

One thing I love about Tumblr that wasn't a thing on Reddit is that I can just write whatever the fuck text post I want. No titles. No putting text on images. No algorithms or karma. Just fuckin splatter your mind onto the screen and people will see it. Like god intended.

It has unironically been great for my mental health. It’s like the opposite of doomscrolling. Coomscrolling? Idk

Mood I've felt marginally better past 2 days than I have in how long???

Speaking as a longtime Tumblr user

It’s doing me good to see you all here. Like we’ve had some pretty sus UX changes lately (although nowhere near on the level of what Reddit’s doing—mostly it’s been months since they introduced Tumblr Live and we’re all still mad about it), and seeing y’all come stumbling in like “oh this is COOL” is letting me take a fresh look at the site and really appreciate why I love it here.

It's great for the ecosystem too ever since the porn ban we've had like the same 200 dudes here and for the longest time the only fresh blood was teenagers. I can't wait to see what they do with all the open space.
