I also just have to talk about this GIF from the training scene because it gets me every single time. It’s different from the other comfort scenes we’ve seen so far (the hug in 1×03, the “Can you feel my hand?” in Shannon’s room, and the smile in the back of the van) because Ava is just stunned.

She was starting to panic inside the wall, begging for Beatrice to “bring [her] out.” Then, when it seems she’s gotten stuck, Ava hits the ground hard and lies hunkered down on her elbows, eyes closed and just trying to catch her breath. A moment later, Beatrice’s hands are on her shoulders and Ava flinches.

Given the way Frances abused and manhandled her in the orphanage, Ava is likely expecting something similar here – for Beatrice to haul her upright and tell her to try again (or worse, lecture her on her performance). But then Beatrice is cupping her face like a child’s, comforting her, soothing her. “It’s okay,” she says. “You did it.”

And Ava just looks up at her in astonishment, like she doesn’t know what she’s seeing. She blinks, processing, as Beatrice strokes her hair, and it’s like you can see the fear leave her eyes.

Because in those words, in that gesture, is “I’ve got you”, “You’re safe”, and “You can trust me.” It’s an affirmation of faith given and faith proven – of Beatrice’s trust in Ava’s success and Ava’s trust in Bea to see her through.

“Thank you,” Ava breathes.

It’s the only thing she can say because Beatrice has come to her aid again, is taking care of her again, and that feeling is still so new and strange, and overwhelming, but it’s also the tenderest thing in the world.

Ava’s gotten a glimpse of Beatrice’s combat skills – she knows the damage she’s capable of inflicting – but in the cradle of Beatrice’s hands is the safest she’s ever been.

Beatrice will not hurt her.

Initially I asked myself ‘why didn’t they open it up to Europe’ and I think the answer is that shits not legal here lmao. Even disregarding the many MANY issues, I can’t stand competitions like this but this is THE WORST I have seen in a long ass time.

Before anyone asks ‘what do they know about art contracts’ I’ve worked in both the US & UK art industries for over a decade and have had many suss contracts in my time. I’ve also worked in advertising for major brands in both areas.

Update- video is on tiktok (Emilysarahart) I cut it down to 4 mins because 12 seemed too much so a lot is missing 😭

Ferrera said it felt like she filmed 500 takes of the speech over the two days of filming, adding, “It was probably 30 to 50 full runs of it, top to bottom. By the end, [co-star Ariana Greenblatt] recited the monologue to me because she had memorized it because that’s how many times I had said it.”

i'll never understand the whole "everyone has trauma therefore your own personal trauma doesn't deserve any unique consideration and respect in how it effects you." we all suffer so it doesn't matter that you're suffering too. like flat out you're never going to get anywhere with someone if you don't treat them like an individual. if you don't acknowledge what's made them who they are, what's shaped them. your pain and my pain don't cancel eachothers out. it was such a cold take, in the cave. ava even tried her best to be empathic and sympathize yet still she wasn't given any in return.

yep, that scene in the cave is probably my least favorite moment of the whole first season. it's such a strange reaction to someone's pain and it feels so out of place

the whole reaction to ava in the early first season from everyone is pretty disgusting really, like she was murdered and her murderer tried to erase her existence, then by some divine intervention shit she gets her life back and you expect her to immediately dedicate it to a bunch of nuns, after a nun abused her for years, and then you have the audacity to call her selfish for not trusting them and for not wanting to risk her life?

I will give mary credit in the end of that episode tho, she does give ava the ability to make her own choice, and our girl has too big of a heart to be selfish (i'll never understand everyone calling her selfish either...)

i feel like the whole idea of ava running and them thinking she's selfish and even them disregarding her pain was intentional to build up sympathy for ava early on, and it works, but it bugs me we never got to see any sort of resolution for it

ava's pain isn't acknowledged at all until bea listens to her and as soon as bea starts to learn who ava is, she basically chooses ava over everything else so we love her for that

anyway, it's 5am and i have a lot of feelings about ava and the way she's treated early on in season 1
