Bro I fucking love the DB Cooper case nothing about this whole situation sounds real. None of the passengers on the plane realized they were being hijacked until the plane landed two hours after it was supposed to and the fbi showed up with suitcases full of money. The note about the bomb almost went unnoticed because the flight attendant thought she was being sexually harassed so she didn't read it. One of the main suspects was the first trans woman in Washington to have a sex change operation. A reporter who was so dead set on his suspect that he brought him to court was so upset about being wrong that he went catatonic and was treated with electroshock therapy and it WORKED. There's been multiple "I'm DB Cooper" death confessions. He never even SAID his name was DB Cooper. Either he got away with a million bucks in today's money and the most iconic and harmless crime American history or he impaled himself on a pine tree while falling a zillion miles an hour in the dark while clutching duffel bags full of cash and either option is equally hilarious. He wore a clip on tie. He committed an act of sky piracy. What in the fucking looney toons

LIghthouse keepers will never be memorialized like soldiers or cops because they didn’t kill anyone (as part of their job) but they’re like, heroes who saved untold lives through discipline and self-sacrifice doing an impossible lonely job and I’m worked up about  it

Clinging to a swaying tower in freezing, driving rain, risking death by everything from pneumonia to a fall to a fucking lightning strike to keep the lantern going when you don’t even KNOW if someone is out on the water!! Working! Class! Heroes!

Love very much the sentiment of this post and also love the specific wording of “didn’t kill anyone (as part of their job)” because what lighthouse keepers did off hours is their own business

idk what teenager needs to hear this but please stop watching south park

someone else out there can probably explain it better than me but south park absolutely rotted people’s brains. maybe some of you are too young to remember, but 10-15 years ago people were honestly so vile because of that show.

south park made it funny to be antisemitic, racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist etc. it introduced forms of bigotry to a lot of kids who otherwise wouldn’t have considered it otherwise.

your memes aren’t cute. I don’t care if you’re drawing those characters with your gay/trans headcanons or whatever. I’m surprised this is even an issue in 2023

oh so the military propaganda in the beginning of the super bowl about the player who joined up after 9/11 and was killed “in the line of duty” is actually so much worse than I thought because he was killed by FRIENDLY fire after he criticized the war/called invading iraq “fucking illegal” and the army tried covering up his death

His name was Pat Tillman.

Some day, on someone’s death bed, they’re going to admit that Pat Tillman’s death was a murder. I’m not saying there was some grand conspiracy to lay a hit, but someone didn’t like what he had to say and took advantage of the fog of war.

Avatar

Pat Tillman was also an atheist. His family is atheist. The military and U.S. politicians who wanted to make hay out of the all-American boy giving up his NFL contract to fight for 'our way of life' did not like that he and his family were not Christian and refused to go along with the "Onward Christian Soldiers" narrative of the ever-increasingly-Evangelical U.S. Armed Forces.

Be careful with marijuana, bipolar, paranoid, and psychotic folks. You may not realize until you’re already in it, but marijuana can trigger psychotic episodes, paranoid episodes and make bipolar mania worse. There has been a fair amount of research on this and google is free.

For only anxious/depressed folks, do whatever helps you. Just be aware the marijuana doesn’t help everybody and the persistent “Marijuana is Cool” culture can hurt people.

also! if you’re on lamictal, pleeease be careful around marijuana since it has triggered seizures in folks on lamictal in the past!!

Shit this is extremely helpful to know. I’ve been put on Lamotrigine (Lamictal) since my last encounter with marijuana. Stay safe!

marijuana has a vasodilation effect meaning it expands or “dilates” blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure, which in turn speeds up heart rate. people with anxiety, including myself, can sometimes suffer actual worsening of anxiety with marijuana due to the brain misinterpreting the physical effect. this has happened to me multiple times. I’ve had a friend go to the ER because her anxiety got so much worse after smoking weed that she thought she was having a heart attack. even if you only suffer from anxiety, be aware of the possible side effects weed can have.

As an ER doctor, I see patients with marijuana side effects fairly frequently. A lot of people don’t know that marijuana can trigger latent psychosis, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder; even if you don’t have any symptoms of these conditions you might get them from using marijuana, and it can happen the first time or the hundredth time. If you have a close relative with any of these disorders, you have a particularly high risk of triggering them in yourself.

I know marijuana is a very popular drug, and for some people the effect of using it is worth the risk - after all, everything has a risk; I see patients who’ve been in traffic accidents every day too, or fallen off horses or bicycles, and most of them go right back to driving/biking/riding… People do things that might be a little bit dangerous because they consider the benefits worth the risk. But it’s important to educate yourself about the risk so you can make an informed decision. :)

If you do use marijuana and see a doctor for some reason, even unrelated, please tell us! We aren’t allowed to tell anyone else (breaching patient confidentiality will have our medical license revoked), and marijuana can interact with medication (as mentioned about Lamictal above), so it’s very important that we know it when treating you. :)

This is so important. The idea gets pushed so universally that marijuana is calming and so people with anxiety should take it, but it can make the anxiety worse and provoke other mental health issues.

If you take marijuana for your anxiety and it works, that’s fine, but please hesitate before recommending it to others. Anxiety disorders are medical conditions, and marijuana has not been approved as a treatment for them.

Even more importantly, if someone tells you they are more anxious on it, or that they don’t want to try it because they’re scared it will make them worse, please respect that. Don’t act as if you kicked their puppy, or call them a “bootlicker to big pharma” (somebody actually did this to me on the anxiety subreddit - thanks, very helpful).

Even if it’s your favourite drug, it is not a magic cure-all, and it’s not for everyone.

I still think that my favorite urban legend/folklore fact is that there are certain areas in New Orleans where you cannot get a taxi late at night not because it isn’t safe, but because taxi companies have had recurring problems of picking up ghosts in those areas who are not aware that they are dead and disappearing from the cab before reaching the destination and therefore stiffing the driver on the fare causing a loss for the company.

Avatar

An occupational hazard of cab driving I had not previously considered

I love that the nola problem here is not “ghosts in my taxi cab,” but “ghosts are FUCKING BROKE DEAD BASTARDS & I GOT BILLS

Horror is when ghosts get into cabs and scare drivers Magical realism is when cab companies have to develop policies to prevent ghastly fare-theft

In a book about the tsunami in Japan in 2011, the writer talked about how there was a huge increase in reports of ghostly activity. Apparently in Japan treating ghosts rudely is basically considered the stupidest thing you could possibly do. For months after the tsunami, taxi drivers would pick up a passenger only to have them give an address in one of the devastated areas. The cab driver often looked up halfway to the destination to find their fare had disappeared. Not wanting to be impolite to the person (even if they were dead) they’d drive to the address, open the door to let them out, then drive away.

Yeah this all checks out

the thing about whether or not trans women or even cis crossdressers and shit "tricking" cishet men is so dumb like i don't think the argument should be "we AREN'T tricking cishet men" i think it should be "cishet men should be open to having their own expectations of their own sexuality challenged because the world is not a sexual buffet for them to chose from" like sometimes a straight guy might actually just jack off to someone he thought he was a woman but is actually just a femboy or some shit. who cares. its just enrichment in their enclosures tbh

like very seriously, its the idea that identity and sexuality should be rigid and easily communicable when sometimes it isn't. if you're worried about being " tricked" into doing gay shit you're actually just insecure and a homophobe/transphobe. it is not about whether or not i am deceiving people, it is about the fact that people think there is something to be deceived about

my favorite free tools for writers

hello, hello! hope you're doing well.

today i am bringing you another list with my top 3 favorite (free!) tools that I find helpful for each phase of writing a novel.

brainstorming phase

  1. Fantasy Names Generator - not only for fantasy (you can also generate real names). this website is just... amazing! it helps you come up with names for characters, places and locations, descriptions, generate traits, outfits (yes, outfits!!), and probably something else you could ever think of.
  2. The Story's Hack - this one is so cool! you can generate names for everything, create your own generator, and practice writing through writing exercises! plus, you can save your generated names to see later, and you earn coins for each idea generated (you can later buy themes - dark, snow, forest, etc)
  3. RanGen - my last favorite generator on this list is RanGen! you can generate plots, appearances, archetypes, love interests, cities, worlds, items, and more.

developing the idea phase

  1. Bryn Donovan - in this blog you can find master lists under the tag "master lists for writers". it is so helpful when you first start developing the characters and need to find the right words to describe them and to find some quirks and flaws!
  2. Writers Write (350 character traits) - again, this is so helpful!
  3. Story Planner - ah, the number of times I've talked about this website... please, PLEASE take a look at it, you won't regret it. this website has literally everything you need to fully develop your idea with outlines for you to fill in step by step.

writing phase

  1. Colleen Houck (80+ barriers to love) - need more romace conflict? there you go!
  2. Cheat Sheets for Writing Body Language - so, you know how your character's feeling, but don't know how he'd physically act? check out this list!
  3. Describing Words - honestly, this is a lifesaver. don't you struggle to find the right word to describe something? well, with this website all you have to do is to type the object you're trying to describe and see which description fits better to you!

revising phase

  1. Language Tool for Google Docs - i know we all have heard about google docs before, but the truth is, it's almost impossible to find free softwares to check grammar and spelling. so, google docs is useful, because it automatically revises it for us, and it's completely free. plus, you can add adds-on, such as "language tool".

Unfortunately, there's only one (free) tool that I actually enjoy for the revising phase. if you know some others, please let me know so that I can try them out and feature in this list.

exporting phase

  1. Google Docs - i find google docs very easy to format and export to .epub, so i'd recommend using it as a free tool.
  2. Reedsy - this is also a free tool available online. all you have to do is to write down each chapter (copy and paste) or import your word document. it will format the document to your liking and export it to pdf, epub and mobi.

that's everything for now! i hope this post was somehow helpful or inspiring!

if you want to see more master lists full of resources, check these:

also, if you are a notion lover just like me, check the free template I just released with everything you need to develop and write your novel!

thank you so much for reading! hope to see you around, and have a nice day <3

I love seeing people write their o's as ø for aesthetic reasons cause in my head I always pronounce it accordingly and it always ends up sounding goofy as hell

You either die or you die (but this time in norwegian/danish)

"Die however you want but you will die" quote of the year imo

“Die however you

want but you will die” quote of

the year imo

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Matt Walsh is just openly talking about killing trans people and our doctors and trump is campaigning on jailing us and banning transition and no cis people seem to give a shit

i'm begging you guys to start pirating shit from streaming platforms. there are so many websites where you can stream that shit for free, here's a quick HOW TO:

1) Search for: watch TITLE OF WORK free online

2) Scroll to the bottom of results. Click any of the "Complaint" links

3) You will be taken to a long list of links that were removed for copyright infringement. Use the 'find' function to search for the name of the show/movie you were originally searching for. You will get something like this (specifics removed because if you love an illegal streaming site you don't post its url on social media)

4) each of these links is to a website where you can stream shit for free. go to the individual websites and search for your show/movie. you might have to copy-paste a few before you find exactly what you're looking, but the whole process only takes a minute. the speed/quality is usually the same as on netflix/whatever, and they even have subtitles! (make sure to use an adblocker though, these sites are funded by annoying popups)

In conclusion, if you do this often enough you will start recognizing the most dependable websites, and you can just bookmark those instead. (note: this is completely separate from torrenting, which is also a beautiful thing but requires different software and a vpn)

you can also download the media in question (look for a "download" button built into the video window, or use a browser extension such as Video DownloadHelper.)

reiterating that you absolutely need an adblocker for these sites (to avoid malware if nothing else), and i HOPE you already have one installed bc using a (free) adblocker for daily browsing tremendously improves your internet experience!

I recommend installing uBlock Origin whenever possible (Adblock Plus is also popular). Also using Firefox, bc they're a nonprofit that gives you privacy and lets you fight ads, while Chrome is owned by Google; they just want to mine your data and sell ads.

How To Block Ads:

  • for Desktop, click this uBlock Origin link (works with most browsers). install, restart browser, good to go!
  • for Android, open Firefox and go to "3 dots menu > add-ons > add-on manager > enable uBlock Origin." (this also blocks youtube ads within firefox!). this doesn't work on Chrome, because Chrome hates you, but there are some ad-blocking apps in the play store that will give you varying results.
  • for iOS, it's trickier, bc Apple also hates you. here are some recommended apps in the app store. (some of them keep premium features behind a paywall, bc again Apple hates you. but there are options.) If those aren't enough, Firefox comes to the rescue again with the Firefox Focus browser app, which includes a powerful built-in adblocker. I can't find specifics, but try clicking the 3 dots menu and fiddling around to customize your preferences.

in conclusion: a combination of Android, Firefox, and uBlock Origin makes for the best browsing experience. But no matter what system/browser combo you use, please install at least one adblocker. you will thank yourself every damn day. it will give you a faster, safer, and much less aggravating experience as a user of the Modern Internet (derogatory)

lol netflix get fucked

When will the time come that we’re not killed for our skin color?

When will the time come that we don’t have to fear going outside because we might get accused of something and forcefully killed?

When will the time come that white people will step up to the plate and protect me and other black people?

When will the time come that my word is worth the same as a white persons? When will black people be believed when something happens?

When will black people find peace knowing that we are part of our communities, not on the fringe?

When will you love us? When will you care? When will you value our lives the same as yours?

Unless white people step up to the plate, none of these things will change. Protest with us, riot, amplify our voices on social media. It’s time to be our fucking ally!

Still remember when a homo- and transphobic acquaintance tried to bring up JKR’s views on trans people in conversation and I shut it down with «oh yeah she’s been saying a lot of dumb shit on Twitter after she finished writing Harry Potter, like when she claimed Dumbledore was gay, just to be politically correct», which made it absolutely impossible for him to admit that he agreed with anything JKR had ever said. Sometimes you just have to weaponise people’s homophobia against their transphobia.

Other ways to stop family members/acquaintances from going on bigoted rants:

  • «Isn’t this all a bit silly? I mean, I’m more concerned about the economy/the war in Ukraine/covid/my job» - weaponised whataboutism
  • «Do you work with a lot of trans people? Because it seems like this is a problem you frequently encounter in everyday life from the way you talk about it» and when they say they don’t, follow up with «well then I don’t see what you’re making such a fuss about»
  • «Idk, I haven’t been much on social media lately, I think Twitter is a waste of time» - make them feel like they’re the ones who are terminally online
  • «Idk, I’m not that concernced with other people’s genitals and sex lives» - creep shaming
