The thing about being a black girl is that we are too dark and devious to ever be born a child. I was born a woman and a criminal before I learned my own name, and the first crime I committed against both my family and this nation was refusing to be silent. Black girls cannot be children in a community that doesn’t consider us people. Black men use the hole between my legs to bury their frustration, to hide their fear and despair until I am too full to carry any happiness of my own. And, the sad thing is that when we—when I was raped I had to look to white men/women for justice. I had to turn from one system of oppression to another to attain some semblance of justice. As my father sits in prison as I occupy space in a University denied to me by birthright, all I can do is ask myself how to move beyond using the devil’s tools to tear down the devil’s playhouse.
