He stops just a hair’s breadth away, caging her in as his hands rest on either side of her.

“I can be quick,” he says quietly. “Can you?” Her eyes widen, realising how he’s twisted her earlier quip. Before she could respond, he shifts again, leaning in close enough till his mouth just hovers over hers, where she could feel his breath skating over her skin. “Yeah?”

If you ever find yourself in a horror scenario, remember to blush really hard when the ghost/demon/monster appears. If you do that fast enough you might be able to shift the genre.

This applies doubly if the antagonist is more abstract. If a house starts growing teeth and flesh you've gotta be prepared to get a little freaky
