Garruk Wildspeaker, an introspection

I have been working on this wee comic for a while now! Garruk is one of my favourite MtG characters of all time, and I was so happy to see him finally free of the Chain Veil’s curse after all this time in Eldraine, however it was also sad that he was put back on the shelf as soon as Eldraine was over, and seemed back to normal right away in M21. 

So this is a comic about Garruk mulling over his new sense of clarity, and guilt for what he did while cursed, and how he wants to move forwards. Since Wizards probably won’t, or at least wont for a long time. 

Won't lie, very sad to not make it through the first round of the illustration contest, but everyone's work was to such high standards, I'll just have to try harder next time!

Who says you can’t have fun with both your hyper fixations? 

Had a train of thought going from “What if Tyranid Tamagotchi” to “What if Tyranid Digimon?”  Honestly when it comes to the design, there’s not a lot of room to “digimon-ise” the ‘Nids, cause a lot of insect Digimon already meet a lot of the same design cues, but I hope I can make those subtle changes that make it look more “Digimon” other than just being a bit more chibi.

Recently finished a re-watch of Adventure 02 AND been having a good time playing Imperialdramon in the TCG

Recently finished a re-watch of Adventure 02 AND been having a good time playing Imperialdramon in the TCG

So I am absolutely fascinated by this set of like three or four episodes in YYH where the animation just goes down a really interesting rabbit hole. I’ve spent the past two or so weeks watching this series and there’s only one other point so far where the animation looks anything like this– one of the two “Darkness Flame” summons from the Dark Tournament.

The thing that’s so weird/wonderful about these sequences is that they’re all focused around a character who ultimately doesn’t mean very much in terms of the series. He causes about four episodes of trouble and then he’s gone! I tried to figure out who was behind the animation on some of these shots but my (admittedly limited) research went to waste. 

I’d been waiting all this time for these couple of episodes, though– I originally saw these episodes about ten years ago, and they’ve stuck with me ever since! 

I keep watching the leg sweep over and over in particular, it’s so clever…!

Akiyuki Shinbo! He's an amazing animator who actually handled a bunch of YYH episodes, but yeah this and the Darkness Flame ones are the most stand out. He also did the fight with Kuwabara vs Rando, most of the scenes of Yusuke getting his power up before Toguro, and basically any moody looking scene with interesting composition and intense colours.
