I should be doing something else.

@mayormcdodd / mayormcdodd.tumblr.com

No really, this isn't a very constructive use of your time.

there was this post going around about covering your drawing tablet with a cloth to prolong its life and im constantly thinking about it bc i literally use this thang as a plate sometimes

Yeah, mine still works fine after like 10 years.

no joke - found one of these at a goodwill for $3 earlier this year. I think they assumed it was some kind of clipboard. Missing the cord, but it's just a usb to micro usb and I've got like 8 of those laying around. It works just fine.

so now that I’ve got an ao3 (sapphireswimming there too btw), I’ve been crossposting my stuff, and went to the end of the Danny Phantom archive so I could work my way back and subscribe to familiar usernames, right?

can… can someone tell me why my fics go to nearly the end of the archive????? like omg I know I entered the phandom a generation ahead of where we are now but?????? I hadn’t even heard of the show until it had been cancelled for several years?????? there were SO MANY big name classic fics and well established authors and like. a whole expansive body of work that I plowed through for months before feeling like I’d gotten a taste of what the phandom had done and. all the fics that formed my fandom experience and taught me what fandom could do

and you’re telling me that there’s literally thousands of them that just? never?? made it to ao3???? that 75% of the fandom’s fanfics haven’t been crossposted??? that there’s only 5 pages of the 12k+ works from before 2011?????

I… I should be in the middle, guys. solidly, solidly in the middle. I don’t start until page 500 or so in ffn???? this is.

I’m. I’m gonna go sit down

Honestly? Coming from a fan who’s been around since day one of the show, the phandom is fucking OLD for such an active fandom. Like, name one other nearly 20 year old fandom that’s as active as this one besides like, star wars.

Ao3 didn’t really become a big thing until pretty recently in fandom memory honestly and after a lot of the classic old fics and fancircles had either been completed or died down. Most early DP authors from back then have either stopped writing fanfic, or moved on to a different fandom years before Ao3 started becoming popular. That’s why so much of it never got crossposted.

DP was one of FFNs biggest categories back when it first started getting popular. Like, I was reading DP fic when dial up internet was still a thing yo, and even then, there was a massive amount of fic posted on FFN every day that slowed to a trickle a few years after the show ended. I actually thank tumblr for keeping the DP fandom alive honestly, because it was slow af for a while before tumblr started becoming fandom central.

Once in a while when I crack open a fic that’s ehhh maybe 7+ years old, there’s just a completely different feel to them compared to what’s written today. DP definitely went through a goth phase, angst and/or shipping were definitely the most popular written topics over AUs and ‘what if XYZ happened’, and it was almost borderline competitive with authors trying to out-angst each other lol.

You know what’s funny is I actually remember when you first started posting too. Like, way back then lol, but I remember you. You kinda came in like… maybe halfway through the fandom’s life? A lot of big name authors were going quiet, and a new wave of authors started posting, which included you.

I feel like a fucking DP historian or something lol, but yeah, I’ve seen the phandom through it’s ups and downs through the years.

Another day one Phandomer and fanfiction.net author/reader since 2006. Danny Phantom was only outplaced by Teen Titans for YEARS on the top cartoon fanfiction categories in it’s first few years. Hell, even now, it’s still number five.

I see a lot of people recommend classics from 2013 on, and it makes me a little sad to think that some people have forgotten some super old school classics, like Phantom’s Sketchbook or The Reality of Virtuality, or big name authors like Darth Frodo or Secret Spy Guy. I remember sapphireswimming’s joining too, and the previous commentor was right. 2011-ish was about the time a lot of the old school classic authors “retired” from DP fanfiction and a new wave of classic authors came in. This second wave of classic authors are the people I see recommending all the time on tumblr.

Bro, there are literally some absolute fucking gems that were posted before the second wave of classic authors that I guarantee if were posted later on, would have exploded to the likes of Phantom of Truth.

This is what a lot of people mean by Danny Phantom being a cult classic. This show wasn’t even unpopular when it aired. This show was actually insanely popular when it aired for the most part. It was one of the few Nick shows that got merchandise which was only (and is still only) reserved for Nick’s God Tier Moneymaker Shows, especially in the mid-2000s time. It wasn’t a lot compared to some other shows, but it still got it. Even in Nicktoons Unite, so many folks, like myself, would admit to only buying it for Danny Phantom. Not because of the other popular show characters! Since day one, this show drew in a lot of attention and a lot of people saw it’s potential from the get-go.

I remember there being literal in person protests in NYC and LA when the show got cancelled. #savetheghostwelovethemost folks! There were online petitions and so much protest. There were fanfics that was just “SIGN THE PETITION! SAVE DANNY PHANTOM!” Forums had those petitions and protest information pinned. It caused a LOT of upset. You couldn’t step into any DP fandom space without seeing all that information in 2006/2007.

HI HELLO FRIEND, I’m so happy to see other phandom old-timers who still remembered that XD I forgot about the petition stuff, people were mad as fuck when DP got cancelled. We’re still mad about it 15+ years later.

You know what’s funny about being in the DP fandom is that it has such a huge niche, cult following and it’s pretty much all underground. People are either 100% hardcore into this show or they can barely recall it as something they watched as a kid. It’s not really a fandom that has a lot of casuals or normies, yet it has a fandom large enough to possibly contend with the likes of Supernatural or Homestuck. Almost everybody I’ve met who’s even moderately into DP has consumed ungodly amounts of fanfic and probably knows at least a few of the most popular AUs or crossovers.

So much DP culture has leaked into other fandoms too. There’s times when I read a non-DP fanfic, and I can just tell that the author was originally a DP writer, especially if it’s whump or darkfic. Like, there’s darkfic… then there’s former DP author darkfic. The DP fandom has garnered a reputation for that among other fandoms, it’s practically a running joke.

To be quite honest, Ao3 has maybe, MAYBE ¼ of all DP fics ever posted to FFN, and that’s being generous. I know that FFN is more or less scorned in favor of Ao3, but you’re doing yourself a huge disservice by dismissing it completely. There’s still a lot of good shit posted there that’s worth digging through to read.

Are we doing recs,? Cuz I got some oldie recs. There’s so many great fics and authors from the 2006-2011 era that I could post here lol, but some other older fics that I don’t see recommended are Awake by SummersSixEcho, Estrelas by Shimegami-chan, Deathday Revelations by Angelbaby1, Duplication by purpledog100, Anathema’s Abode by Twisted Creampuff, Rediscovering Home by donteatacowman, Running Blind by Deja Thoris of Mars, Impasse by BJA fan, Supernatural Retaliation by You’re-not-so-big, and Ghost Zone Experience by Dream Trance.

The author is long gone by now, but Royal Thorns by Zilleniose was one of if not the first Ghost King AU ever written that kinda sparked it into fandom popularity. They’ve abandoned their writing which is sad, but occasionally I still see their art floating around too.

Everything by the authors Cordria, Nylah, HiddenAuthor, ChaosDragon, CatalystOfTheSoul, You’re-Not-so-Big, WingsofMorphius, PixieGirl13, and BJA fan are classic and worth reading and have honestly written so many good fics that it would literally be it’s own mile long post to list them all. Many, MANY common DP tropes, AUs, and Fandom specific plots originated in this circle of authors.

@sapphireswimming I’m sorry we basically hijacked your post lol

Oh man, not at all - I love hearing from phans who have been around for so long and are still here!

Also this thread sparked this ask I just got (that I think tumblr’s decided to ruin the spacing of :/ but with a long list of recommendations for classic authors to check out in addition to the great ones you’ve listed above)

If anyone wants to see something interesting check out this ancient deviantart page it’ll give you an idea of what the phandom looked like circa 2005-2006. Also the very first fan fic I ever read. Not even just Danny Phantom, my first fan fic ever.

Basically, this is a shout-out to White Gryphon. I have no idea what happened to you, but I hope you’re having a good life.

that buzzfeed quiz abt the zodiac questions that reveal a tarot card that matches ur personality is cool n all but did y’all know people actually do have two “birth cards” and they are like, much deeper than a buzzfeed quiz. you can calculate yours here mine are death and the emperor

you’re just posting this so you can brag that you’re death and emperor

cranky cuz you’re not death and the emperor aren’t you

Death and the emperor are nice I guess, but some of us get 3 birth cards

jokes aside i think it’s amazing and heartwarming to see like 4chan incel bros perform the miracle of crawling out of that hole and becoming real human beings and chronicling their journey to realizing that they can be well adjusted happy normal dudes

Where’s the post about the guy who turned his life around bc of his shrimp? Bc that’s very relevant here

This guy. This makes me so happy

this is what i was thinking about when i wrote this post

This is my cat, Brigitte.

24 hours after I brought her home, I got a mindblowing job offer.  Since I adopted her nine years ago, my life has become an amusement park.  She has brought me good luck ever since I took her into my home.

I’m telling you, there’s something about this animal.  Good fortune follows her everywhere.

I don’t want to be selfish.  I have everything I need and then some.  So, I’m sharing her with you.

Reblog Brigitte and you’ll receive fantastic news in the next 24 hours.

And when you do, please remember to help your local SPCA and support them in the difficult work they do for wonder animals like Brigitte.  Any donation helps your SPCA, even if it’s just five bucks.

Kitties like Brigitte are counting on you to give back when they bring you good luck.

Thanks, and congratulations on your good news!

can you believe female hysteria was considered like an actual medical thing… god

mary louise moneybags in 1880: im horny all the time and also sad and i feel dissatisfied with my shitty life i dont want kids i hate my dad and my husband

dr mis o’geny: i diagnose you with WOMAN

fun fact if you’re a man you’re not allowed to laugh at this joke bcus i don’t go a day without hearing about how girls are all overemotional unstable and crazy so you all still think like this you’ve just gotten better at phrasing it in a way that doesnt seem like bullshit at first glance

Not only did they diagnose hormonal issues as hysteria, doctors would diagnose nearly ANYTHING as hysteria. Any mental or physical disease was blamed on hysteria, which they believed was caused by a woman’s uterus floating around in her body. Doctors treated it by stimulating the woman’s vagina. With their penises. For medical purposes.

And then they got sick of using their dicks/hands so one of them invented the vibrator.

The second girl at least read the book to confirm that it was shit, she even had Capote on deck as backup. Chick 1 is just lazy

Nope. Girl 2 saw that Girl 1′s absolutely accurate analysis was being shut down just because it wasn’t stated in an intellectual way (in spite of its validity). So Girl 2 reinforced Girl 1′s opinions in solidarity and made sure that it was absolutely clear that Girl 1 was factually correct. WITHOUT taking credit for her observations (”kim is right” instead of “Actually, kim”)

Girls supporting Girls.

Girls not letting other girls be treated poorly.

“I stopped after 30 pages” should always be taken as a severe mark against the book, not the reader.

While the teacher is indeed being a little shit for not engaging the first girl’s opinions, the second girl’s statements show a much better academic approach to the material. The first girl just didn’t like the book and made some random assumptions about the writing process. The second girl actually knew something about the creation of the material that happened to validate the first girl’s statements.

I was curious about the context, so I watched this entire episode of Freaks and Geeks. This scene is entirely about solidarity, all of the literary analysis/context is really unimportant and beside the point. This is about one person standing up for her friend because they're being embarrassed and put on the spot. And supporting people when they need it is what being a good friend entails. It just happens that the class discussion of On the Road was a convenient way to show that.
