P.S. : can someone tell me if I did the image description right cuz I have no idea

RIP to my ghost mantis, Ripley, who for some reason spent his entire 6 month life as a nymph and never matured to his adult form. I’ll miss you, you lil freak of nature. Ily.

PS if anyone has ever seen that in mantids please let me know because he molted ONCE in 6 months but was still active and eating, it was bizarre.

Aw I'm so sorry for your loss of your tiny friend. :< I'm sure they had a good life anyway and were so loved.

And yes, this condition is well known among mantis keepers and is nicknamed Peter Pan Syndrome. I also had a peter pan baby who never did their last molt and eventually passed away. :'(

No one is quite sure what causes Peter Pan Syndrome, but it's far from uncommon in pet mantids. I haven't kept ghosts yet myself but I do know that the condition occurs in them. It can occur in both early and late instar nymphs.

I have a personal theory, though it remains anecdotal without enough data yet, that keeping a very consistent day/night light cycle and making sure the mantis exercises a bit can help. I had another nymph I thought had gotten PPS as it hadn't molted for a VERY long time, but I got a smart lightbulb and set it next to the tank and kept the room otherwise dark. I kept the day/night on the computerized time and then slowly lengthened the 'days,' like it was becoming spring, while also encouraging the (particularly sedentary compared with other individuals I've kept) mantis to chase more prey items than it was eating. I used an empty fly pupa tied on a thread so when it caught it it was something it could nibble on and then discard.

The mantis in question (hierodula membranacea female) did actually finally molt, though it was a bit imperfect and their raptorial arms didn't come out quite right (some pinching and nerve damage) but they were able to continue on to live a full life to almost two years of age. So far haven't had any other instances of PPS since I've been using the timed light and encouraging extra hunting, but it's still hard to say if I actually pulled that one out of PPS with this treatment or if it was just coincidence that they finally molted. More research to be done.

This guy knows what he’s talking about. He’s one of the lead writers for Leverage and if you ever watch the series on DVD, do yourself a favor and listen to him talk about how the scripts got written. Some of the advice he has is stuff I use all the time: 1. Don’t introduce an important plot person or thing after the first half of the story. 2. Always tie up loose ends. 3. Introduce important things in the middle of unimportant things. 4. If you have to infodump, find an emotion to tie it to and it will seem less like infodump and more like a motive rant. Seriously this guy knows how to write.

Today I learned 3D animation is a horror show outside the camera's field of view.

Just to add context, the director wanted the scene to use an 85mm lens which is slightly telephoto. Telephoto lenses give a very intimate feel because they compress the scene. Background and foreground objects can appear larger at longer focal lengths.

But that compression can also make objects look the wrong size in context with the subject depending on the framing.

This is done in live action as well using another person's hands in front of the camera.

This is also something that 3d artists do

resolve is a project i have been working on since 2019, when I was 29. I called it a “zine” to start but turned out more like an art book; it has over 130 ilustrated pages, interspersed with narrative text-only pages that tell a brief story of my experiences (largely internal) with CPTSD, complex dissociative disorder, and recovery.

When finished, I plan to have resolve available in full online for no cost. I looked for people’s stories to connect with when I was trying to manage symptoms I couldn’t understand, and I wanted to provide my own in spirit of that.

I have very recently become much more disabled, with suspected MCAS and PoTS on top of fibromyalgia and CPTSD/CDD and will be taking some time in my life to focus on taking care of my health, and then on finishing resolve for good.

If you would like to support the completion of the work and see art posted as I complete it before publication, here’s where you can find me:

Since November I've been going through a weird crisis/transformation around my art and identity. It's left me feeling ready to leave art behind as soon as I find a job that I can do that pays my bills. Tons of my answers were about melancholy and dissatisfaction and the final answer I chose "spite", but got love.

Anyway, thanks quiz maker person for making me cry unexpectedly. But not in an entirely bad way. <3
