Masked Fox Creations

@masked-fox-creations / masked-fox-creations.tumblr.com

Hey I'm Fox, writer, entertainer, genderfluid (any pronouns, mix it up!), got a whole two braincells but no coordination.

Guess what’s here! That’s right, a newsletter! So if you want to keep up to date with the Queer Greaser story here’s how. Soon as I have a release date you’ll be notified, and while you wait signing up will get you a sneak preview of the first five chapters (over 10k words) of the book!

If you haven’t seen me talk about it and are curious, you can browse the tag to get an idea about what this all is.

bernard-black-books was literally so brave for saying this like she started a revolution and got all the fandom nerds riled up and frothing at the mouth. respect for our troops

[Image Description: an addition to a post by user @/bernard-black-books. It says “I was talking to this girl on hinge and we got onto the topic of books (i work in a bookshop), and she asked me if i had any favourite tropes to read? And for the life of me i couldn’t figure out how to respond? Like Ms, i dont read fanfic, i dont understand what youre asking. I dont think ‘tropes’ can be used interchangeably with ‘genre’. We dont have a section at work for shit like ‘enemies to lovers’ im sorry thats not how real literature works” End ID]

if you type “trope” into google scholar you’re going to find literary theory dating back to the 1980s at least. one of the first results is H. L. Gates ‘James Gronnishaw and the trope of the talking book’, probably the most cited work on black American slave narratives. the wiktionary page for trope contains a quote from 1776, George Campbell in ‘Of Wit, Humour and Ridicule’, who uses the word in its modern sense. the concept seems to derive from ancient Greek formal rhetoric. this is always one of the most misinformed posts i see on my dashboard.

i don’t think their point is that tropes aren’t a concept in Real Literature™️, but that they’re not how your average reader of non-fanfic books interacts with them. like, they’re not organised like that, they’re not tagged like ao3 fics, no one’s first question when told about a new book is “oh what tropes does it have” because that is to most people kind of a bizarre way to get an idea of something you haven’t read yet.

It’s like saying ‘I like pastries!’ and being asked ‘so what’s your favorite ingredient?’ Sure, maybe you like certain ingredients more than others, but… you’re eating the whole thing.

I understand that view as well, but what is wrong with someone saying they like their pastries to have fruit in them? Or chocolate? Or how coconut ruins it for them? I see it as someone coming in and asking what you like to see in stories. Do you like stories of redemption? Do you like tales where people form a rag tag team and a found family? Those aren’t genres, they are tropes, and I think there is value in seeing what you like.

Media has tropes, it’s not just applicable to fanfiction, and if you can’t understand that it’s not the fault of people with actual literary analysis skills.

The OP and anyone who agrees more than likely has tropes that they adore! and tropes they hate! But they’re so intent on being superior they can’t even understand basic literary terms lmao

Hey y'all, it's your local queer crippled shitposter lol. I just moved out of a shit situation, I couldn't bring much and I'm trying to rebuild my life, so if any of y'all could buy something off my am*zon wishlist that'd be great

In particular your bitch is cold and needs some slippers and gloves, and a vaccuum bc we don't have one and my allergies are ruthless. Literally anything on this list helps tho

(Update: Someone bought me the vacuum! Fuck yeah!! Tysm!! <3)

(Update: gloves have also been purchased! Thank you 💖)

Voting is now open for the Stanuary 2022 themes! Use this poll to vote!!

You can vote for as many options as you want, but only the four with the most votes will be used for the main themes. However, don’t despair if your choices don’t win! All additional themes will still be listed on the Stanuary blog as extra prompts.

This poll will be open until Sunday, December 26th, and the winning themes will be posted on December 27th.

I want to preface this by saying this is not victim blaming. This not calling people online lazy or grifting or whatever.

But an underlooked proponent on why some people are nearing homeless and crowdfunding heavily rn is bc society has failed you by making it as inconvenient as possible to learn about social systems and programs that already exist to help your situation as well as not having enough programs and aid.

Lemme give some examples. I have been unemployed for 10 months. My mom told me about a paying job training program a month ago after I already decided to mive in with her to find work, because nothing was coming up in my own city. My best friend didn’t know about affordable housing assistance in my state until she talked to my dad about it on a chance encounter. Some people on here have to see posts about much cheaper alternatives to their current prescriptions or medical plans because its not in the interest of their doctors paychecks to tell them about it. I would have waited to get vaccinated and not have crowdfunded for Uber money if I had known they were going to give free vaccine rides the next month. But I wouldn’t have really known this until I opened the app once that program started, because it is in their interest to keep taking my money until its their desired time for me to reap their “generous” services.

What I’m trying to say is that this is an under discussed aspect of how capitalism fails people. When you are forced to make your life and work and finances so singular and self interested, you are cut off from community and equivalent social services to proper government assistance. You literally don’t know that there is help somewhere out there for you unless you’re told.

I believe a professor I had called this “cultural wisdom” but I haven’t been able to find the social science articles that expanded on this. It’s a practical knowledge of local systems that allows someone to function and thrive in that system. The example she used was having an understanding that banks can hold your money, but the practical aspect of accessing your money (in a convenient and easy manor) was knowing about ATMs and how to use them. But unless you have an account or someone ready to inform you, there’s no dedicated time or milestone where someone learns this.

And that’s just with a machine designed to give you YOUR money, let alone complex social service programs.

I want everyone who crowdfunds for hospital bills to know they probably don’t have to oay them at all. Just find the financial aid office of the hospital. It’s on the website BY LAW. Find the form. Fill it out. Get the bills canceled or lowered! You don’t need crowd money, you need the government’s money that’s already set aside for your medical care.

GO TO, MESSAGE, OR CALL YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY. Libraries are focusing more and more on community resources, support, and outreach. If you genuinely don’t know something or feel uncertain or are in a new situation, a reference librarian will not only help you sort your thoughts through their reference interview but then help you arm yourself with knowledge from reliable and often local sources. It doesn’t even have to be a question to Ask A Librarian. You can simply say “I’m in this situation now. I don’t know what to do next./I’m not confident I know everything I should or want to know.”

Ok yall are adding great additions in the tags but you can also just respond to the post so I can reblog those versions 👀

it’s time to yell at Discord before they help destroy the planet

Discord’s CEO is on twitter hinting about their apparent future involvement with NFTs/crypto.

In case you aren’t already aware, cryptocurrency is digital currency that sucks because it consumes an absurd amount of energy and computer parts, and NFTs are a way of creating false scarcity for digital items, which are bought and sold with crypto currency, and also suck. Here is an article about why that shit sucks. The article has additional information. Here is a twitter account that also documents NFT thefts & scams (NFTs are often stolen art sold without permission).

HERE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO ASAP:

1. CANCEL NITRO. Don’t wait around for them to reverse course or apologize. Cancel it now, choose “other” when it asks why you’re canceling and write in your answer. They need to see the financial backlash right now. You can always re-sub if they backpedal, but right now they need the impetus to do the backpedaling.

2. GO HERE to their feedback forum. make a thread and tell them you cancelled nitro and don’t want them involved with crypto garbage. contribute to other threads if you see one that piques your interest. EXTRA CREDIT: downvote this thread, boo them, downvote the crypto dingdongs in the comments.

3. If you have twitter, tweet at them. tweet at @discord and reply to Jason’s tweet with whatever dunking and booing you feel like.

4. PASS IT AROUND. Tell your friends with nitro. Tell your favorite group chats and servers. Encourage them to do the same.

This is one of those situations where we need massive and decisive backlash RIGHT NOW to nip it in the bud. Your input really does matter right now. Shouting down shit like this has gotten even companies like Patreon to reverse course on bad decisions. Even the stupidest tech bros do respond to enough screaming. So SCREAM. Remind them where their real money comes from, and scare them away from the planet-destroying fake money.

don’t say “jews” when you’re trying to say “israeli people”

Avatar

like you’re literally doing zionist’s propaganda work for them by conflating the two

Avatar

“how could jews let this happen” is a genuine take i saw, and like. we didn’t. we really didn’t. many jews have been against the IDF for longer than you’ve known what the acronym means.

i figured people would know this, apparently not, but the good majority of jews are scattered across the world, not just in israel (hence the term diaspora). additionally, when you make statements like this, you’re erasing palestinian jews.

we are not a fucking monolith! implying we are only helps zionism! you sound like the idiots who claim all muslims are terrorists!

take on some god damn personal responsibility to do antizionist actions in your own community instead of shifting the blame to Every Jew Ever because mommy told you kikes are evil

me realizing my experiences with sewing have been a lie this whole goddamn time:

I don’t know about human surgeons, but that’s a suture pattern I use to close skin all the time and you can see why.

The slip stitch (or invisible stitch) was created to hide seams and later used by surgeons.

My cousin is a surgeon and was sewing something and used that stitch and then froze and said “Wait this isn’t a person.”

Grandma said “We used it first keep going.”

controversial opinion, but donating your old books to libraries isn't usually the universally charitable deed most people think it is. most public libraries don't have the space, staff, or budget to sort through used books in the off chance that one or two out of a hundred are in good enough condition to add to their collection.

it's always a good idea to call ahead and ask what, if any, materials the library might accept as a donation. you'd be surprised what they will and won't take! my library flat-out refuses encyclopedias and textbooks, which takes a lot of people by surprise. on the other hand, the same library is always accepting donations of jigsaw puzzles and used magazines! it doesn't hurt to ask.

if you have old books you don't want and need to get rid of, i suggest finding a used bookstore, a charity that specializes in distributing used books, or a local school and/or retirement community.

if you just want to support your local library, that's great! just... ask them what they need, instead of assuming. most libraries would be much happier to receive a crisp $20 bill than a boxload of dusty paperbacks.

You know who WOULD like your dusty paperbacks? Charities that distribute books to people who are incarcerated!

something about aba therapy that i feel is worth noting:

aba therapists are the only type of therapists in the united states that are not required to have a college degree in order to practice. the vast majority of aba therapists i’ve met don’t have one.

then what are the requirements, you may ask?

be at least 18. have a high school diploma. complete a few hours of general training.

that’s it.

they’re also allowed to teach your child literally whatever they want. i saw a video of someone the other day who was put thru aba as a child. they were obsessed with the color blue, so what did the aba therapist do? gave every child in their class except them a blue piece of paper for weeks until they stopped crying about it. aka, until they were too numb to the emotional pain of being left out to react anymore.

i guess the end goal was to make them…not like…the color blue anymore? like, seriously. what was the point of that???

they teach children to smile on command even when they don’t feel happy. they teach autistic children not to stim - something that has been proven not only beneficial but necessary for autistic people’s wellbeing.

they can withhold water, food, or affection from your child until the child complies with whatever behavior they want them to complete. i wish i was joking.

this is literal child abuse.

the only therapy that does not require a degree to practice, abusive as hell, manipulative, they are literally allowed to teach your child whatever the hell they want…and yet it’s also the only therapy for autistic children that is covered by most insurance companies.

make it make sense.

When you watch ABA training in action, you realize that it’s dog training. It’s dog training a human child who can’t advocate for better treatment or more respect. I hate it with every fiber of my being.

This should be required reading for neurotypicals

This article comment seems to summarise it pretty well.

Suzanne Wright of Autism Speaks literally sees us Autistics as “the least of us” - as in HUMANITY.

Edit: an activist friend of mine back then had transcribed Wright’s entire Vatican speech and we’re forever grateful because my friend had to keep listening to this horrible person treat her own grandson like a subhuman specimen. Suzanne may be dead but her organization is thriving and dangerous.
