Society is designed to make us hate our situation. The skinny want to gain weight. The overweight want to lose weight. The short wish they were an inch taller. The tall which they were slightly shorter. Those with light complexions want to get slightly tanned. The tanned want to get slightly lighter. The single wish they could be married. The married reminisce about the days of less responsibility whilst single. The ones who didn't go to uni wish they got a degree. Those who went to uni wish they went straight into a job. The childless couple can't experience serenity until they are blessed with a baby child. Parents with babies would do anything to experience a moment of serenity. The young want to be older and the old only wish they could go back to being younger. The unemployed are dying to work and those working are dying for a break. Honestly, whether you're overweight, skinny, rich, broke, husband, wife, mother, or father, young or old society will never be satisfied and they'll never be content with you. Don't look at what you don't have. Look at everything you do have. Allah said, 'If you are grateful, I shall surely increase you!'

The Sunnahs of Eid-ul-Fitr

Shaykh Saalih Ibn Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) said:

1 – It is mustahab to recite takbeer during the night of Eid from sunset on the last day of Ramadan until the imaam comes to lead the prayer.

The format of the takbeer is as follows:

Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, wa Lillaahi’l-hamd

(Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, there is no god except Allah, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, and all praise be to Allah).

Or you can say Allahu Akbar three times (instead of two).

Men should raise their voices reciting this dhikr in the marketplaces, mosques and homes, but women should not raise their voices.

2 – You should eat an odd number of dates before leaving for the Eid prayer, because the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did not set out on the day of Eid until he had eaten an odd number of dates. You should stick to an odd number as the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did.

3 – You should wear your best clothes – this is for men. With regard to women, they should not wear beautiful clothes when they go out to the Eid prayer-place, because the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Let them go out looking decent”

i.e., in regular clothes that are not fancy.

It is haram for them to go out wearing perfume and makeup.

4 – Some of the scholars regarded it as mustahab to do ghusl for the Eid prayer, because it is narrated that some of the salaf did this. Doing ghusl for Eid prayer is mustahab, just as it is prescribed for Jumu’ah because one is going to meet people. So if one does ghusl that is good.

5 – The Eid prayer. It seems to me, based on the evidence, that it is fard ‘ayn (an individual obligation) and that every male is obliged to attend the Eid prayer except for those who have an excuse. This was the view favoured by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him).

6 – If Jumu’ah and Eid fall on the same day, the Eid prayer should be held, as should Jumu’ah prayer, as is indicated by the apparent meaning of the hadeeth of al-Nu’maan ibn Basheer (radiallaahu anhu) which was narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh. But those who attend the Eid prayer with the imaam may attend Jumu’ah if they wish, or they may pray Dhuhr.

7 – Ruling on Tahiyyatul-Masjid. What seems more likely to be correct in my view is that we should pray two rak’ahs in the Eid prayer-place to greet the mosque, but we should not denounce one another with regard to this issue, because it is a matter concerning which the scholars differ. We should not denounce others with regard to matters where the scholars differ, unless there is a clear text. So we should not denounce the one who prays (Tahiyyatul-Masjid) or the one who sits down without praying.

8 – One of the rulings on the day of Eid – Eid al-Fitr – is that Zakat al-Fitr is due on this day. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) enjoined that it should be given before the Eid prayer.

9 – People should greet one another, but that results in haraam actions on the part of many people, such as men entering houses and shaking hands with unveiled women without any mahram being present. Some of these evils are worse than others.

Some people have the custom of going out to the graveyard on the day of Eid to greet the occupants of the graves, but the occupants of the graves have no need of any greeting or congratulations, because they do not fast or pray qiyaam.

Visiting the graves is not something to be done especially on the day of Eid or Friday or any particular day.

Visiting graves is an act of worship, and acts of worship are not acceptable unless they are in accordance with sharee’ah. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did not single out the day of Eid for visiting the graves, so we should not do so either.

10 – There is nothing wrong with what men do on the day of Eid of embracing one another.

11 – It is prescribed for the one who goes out to the Eid prayer to go by one route and return by another, following the example of the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). This Sunnah does not apply to other prayers, Jumu’ah or anything else, it only applies to Eid.

Growing up as a young Muslim nowadays, you just have to be real. Sometimes you really have to sit and ask yourself if your faith is your top priority. if it’s not, then something has gotta change. Because when pleasing your creator is your top priority, then everything else falls right into place.

لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّة إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظيمُ

BASICS OF ISLAM : Allah ( God Almighty ) : Muhasaba (Self-Criticism or Self-Interrogation). Part2

Self-criticism resembles a lamp in the heart of a believer, a warner and a well-wishing adviser in his or her conscience. Every believer uses it to distinguish between what is good and evil, beautiful and ugly, pleasing and displeasing to God. Through the guidance of this well-wishing adviser, the believer surmounts all obstacles, however seemingly insurmountable, and reaches the desired destination.

▪Self-criticism attracts Divine mercy and favor, which enables one to go deeper in belief and servanthood, to succeed in practicing Islam, and to attain nearness to God and eternal happiness.

▪It also prevents one from falling into despair, which will ultimately lead to reliance on personal acts of worship to be saved from Divine punishment in the Hereafter.

(If one despairs (of Divine mercy) concerning his or her eternal life because of his or her sins, relief from Divine punishment is sought. Such a person then remembers and relies on past good deeds. However, this way is utterly inadequate, for only through Divine mercy can one be saved from God’s punishment and enter Paradise.)

As self-criticism opens the door to spiritual peace and tranquility, it also causes one to fear God and His punishment.

In the hearts of those who constantly criticize themselves and call themselves to account for their deeds, this Prophetic warning is always echoed:

If you knew what I know, you would laugh little but weep much.(Bukhari, Kusuf, 2; Muslim, Salat, 112.)

Self-criticism, which gives rise to both peacefulness and fear in one’s heart, continuously inspires anxiety in the hearts of those who are fully aware of the heavy responsibility they feel-the anxiety such as that which is voiced in:

If only I had been a tree cut into pieces. (Tirmidhi, Zuhd, 9.)

Self-criticism causes the believer to always feel the distress and fear expressed in:

The earth seemed constrained to them for all its vastness, and their own souls straitened to them (Tawba 9:118).

The verse:

Whether you make known what is in your souls or hide it god will bring to account for it (Baqara 2:284)

resounds in every cell of their brains, and they groan with utterances like:

I wish my mother had not given birth to me!(Ibn Sa‘d, Al Tabaqat al-Kubra, vol. 3, p. 360, Beirut: 1980.)

While it is difficult for everyone to achieve this degree of self-criticism, it is also difficult for those who do not do so to be sure that they will be able to live today better than yesterday, and tomorrow better than today.

▪Those who are crushed between the wheels of time, whose current day is not better than the preceding one, cannot perform their duties pertaining to the afterlife well.

Constant self-criticism and self-reprimand show the perfection of one’s belief.

▪Everyone who has planned his or her life to reach the horizon of a perfect, universal human being is conscious of this life and spends every moment of it struggling with themselves.

▪Such a person demands a password from whatever occurs to his or her heart and mind. Self-control against the temptations of Satan or the excitement of temper are practiced, and words and actions are carefully watched. Self-criticism is constant, even for those acts that seem most sensible and acceptable.

Evening reviews of words and actions said or done during the day are the rule, as are morning resolutions to avoid sins.

A believer knits the “lace of his or her life” with the “threads” of self-criticism and self-accusation.

(In other words, all moments of one’s life are spent in self-criticism and constant awareness of what one says and does.)

So long as a believer shows such loyalty and faithfulness to the Lord and lives in such humility, the doors of heaven will be thrown open and an invitation will be extended:

Come, O faithful one. You have intimacy with Us. This is the station of intimacy. We have found you a faithful one. Every day he or she is honored with a new, heavenly journey in the spirit.

It is God Himself Who swears by such a purified soul in:

Nay, I swear by the self-accusing soul! (Qiyama 75:2).

اللَّهمَّ إنك عَفُوٌّ تحب الْعفوَ فاعفُ عَنِّا

“It’s okay to be scared; please try your best to remember that there are always people who will help you through.”
