A Meta Analysis of Haida and Retsuko’s Karaoke scene
So I watched the season 3 finale of Aggretsuko again to try and really dissect what was going on in that final Karaoke scene, and at first I thought by the end of it Haida was using reverse psychology to upset and spur Retsuko into finally gaining enough confidence to stand up for herself and friends and be truthful. I thought that because I misheard the last thing he said before she snapped, and now I realize he was being completely honest. No reverse psychology was used.
I had misheard when he said “I want to be where you belong” as “I want YOU to be where you belong” so what Haida actually means is “I want you to trust me that I will be on your side no matter what you decide on doing” and NOT “I want you to be with me, where you belong”
So when Retsuko snaps back (and understandably so) she is raging at the world for how unfair it is and finally snapping at the idea of someone else telling her to do something and controlling her life. So far, EVERY character has told Retsuko that this is just how the world is, you need to accept it. This app judgement is just the epitome of that for her, that Haida is just playing along with the system she can’t break herself out of.
That’s how Haida finally reaches her. He lets her rage, he lets her scream, and doesn’t demand she stop. He doesn’t get scared or put off. He listens to her screams, and grabs her hand to let her know “Yeah, the world IS terrible, so I’m going to help you get back at it!”
Haida is the first, and I mean the FIRST person, to truly be on her side and mindset in this. Of course she had Washimi and Gori and Fenneko, but all the advice they gave was sticking to world views and systems. Tadano was tragic because he DID break away from that system, but Retsuko truly wanted marriage and work for what they were, and not the system. They had different wants, it happens.
Do I think Haida calling her a chicken was good? No, not really. That was kinda messed up, but hear me out! Retsuko was at her LOWEST low, she was giving up. Yes, trauma victims don’t deserve to be shamed like that, but Haida wasn’t WRONG when he said she was letting her attacker win. She believed everything her attacker said, and her dream reinforced all her insecurities until it almost broke her.
No, Haida didn’t do it with grace or proper etiquette, but he DID save her from that spiral, and to be honest? I agree with what he said about feelings and forcing them onto others. By letting out all HIS ugly feelings, he was trying to encourage Retsuko to do the same. To let her know it’s okay to be angry and yell in front of others, and not for their pleasure with her Idol performances. That she didn’t have to do it in a cigarette smelling karaoke bar every night, all alone.
Because, you see, Retsuko raging at Haida was the ONLY time she ever faced her current source of anger head on in person, other than Tadano of course. With Tadano, he fought back and they couldn’t meet eye to eye, it was a tragic parting. That’s why this moment with Haida works so well for me. It’s the opposite of what happened with Tadano. Tadano was timid, he was scared, he was desperate for her to change her mind. Haida was none of those things. He let her RAGE!
I just… this season of Aggretsuko was so interesting and emotional with complex themes and writing. I understand why people would be upset at what Haida did at the end, that even if she got better it wasn’t the right way to handle it, and I get that. But I think that what the show was TRYING to say with that scene, whether you agree with the execution or not, outweighs a not so good outburst at a trauma victim. Feel free to disagree, but this is my take on it!
This is exactly what I was thinking during that scene! It’s even more obvious in the subbed version.
When Fenneko asks why they were at karaoke Washimi says that it’s a place where you can let out your bottles up emotions.
Haida, in the sub, basically says what’s the point of having feelings if you can’t force them on others?
They were talking about Retsuko and her series long emotional arc. It was a blunt, straightforward way of saying that she needs to talk to others when she’s going through hard times.
It was harsh, and it was what Retsuko needed within that narrative. But, I completely understand why people would be upset with how it was handled.
Exactly! Haida was telling her that she needed to communicate with others and be honest with others when she feel something is wrong or off, and that’s been her struggle the ENTIRE series! This was a culmination of 3 seasons of this show, and Haida’s outburst was meant to reflect that.
Again, totally understandable to be upset at the things he said, but in the end I kinda think that was the point? To let out all the ugly feelings, to expose yourself to those you can trust. He wanted her to trust at least one person so she could heal and be free, and so he wanted her to trust him.
It’s also a great climax to his romantic arc too. Which is a whole other discussion if you want to talk about it. I’m on such a high from this season and I’d love to go in depth with someone.
Oh yeah I’d love to! I’ve been on that season 3 high for HOURS now! Tbh though I stayed up all night watching it even though I had a day nap earlier yesterday, so after I sleep for a bit I wanna discuss that too! Whether in DMs or just reblogging more meta stuff here, whatever works!
I just read your meta on the karaoke scene from the finale and I read it that way too, alongside a show of how support from loved ones is never perfect, that sometimes you have to be blunt to get through to the people you care about and it is a show of how much Haida cares about Retsuko, not just as a romantic prospect but as a friend too
Yeah! I really liked how you could see that it wasn't actually inherently romantic by nature. What Haida was saying was something that could very easily apply to being close friends. He just wanted her to trust him!! He really cared, even when everyone and even her told him he didn't KNOW her, that didn't stop him from caring and wanting to try and be good!
I feel like people didn’t got the theme of “perfect things are not always what are best for us” and misread haida’s rage at the last episode, but hey, each to their own
(SPOILER)
Did the people who are mad at Haida watch sub or dub?? Because to me, what Haida said didn't come across as anything bad??
I watched it in Japanese, and to me that scene came across as positive.
She needed to come out of her shell rather than caving in to fear. If she had let it, she would've been willing to give up on the world all together.
Just as she said in the beginning, she wouldn't take anymore risks after experiencing failed romance, and after the incident she similarly wouldn't have taken the risk of going out again.
Giving up on the real world because it had hurt her was Retsuko's dilemma this season.
After getting assaulted, her mind started to think that EVERYONE would be out to get her. That all those fans would've been all like that guy. But Haida went to her and told her to go back into the world and FIGHT BACK.
He believed that Retsuko wasn't weak and knew she could take it. Just as he, the first guy Retsuko confronted in that karaoke without being intimidated by her aggression, could take whatever Retsuko threw at him. And man did she throw a whole lot of hurtful but truthful feelings.
So in the end, Haida got her to perform one last time without fear from the fans or whatever risk she was willing to avoid because she had given up on fighting back.
she should have been rewarded.
Y'all got sources?
yeah so more information about this woman who leaked important information pertaining russia’s involvement in the election:
Her name is “Reality Leigh Winner” and she was a NSA Contractor. She passed a top secret NSA document to a news source (an article from The Intercept) that contains information about a Russian cyber-attack with one voting machine DAYS before the 2016 presidential election. This is considered the most detailed piece of proof regarding Russia’s interference with the elections to date.
Here’s how the NSA document described how the Russians did the hacking:
So instead of having Trump and his entire party removed, they gon throw home girl in jail and try to act like none of this happened.
So they say it’s very plausible that an alternative universe exists, let’s go and fix all of season 4
Here’s page three. I’m going to be posting new pages on fridays so I don’t get burnt out.

So I started drawing this Starco Comic. This comic is made from a fanfic on FF.net called “We Belong Together” by One-Crazed-Up-Dragon.
This will be multiple pages and I will create a hashtag to follow this comic. I’ll use #SvtfoeWeBelong
Lingering Baggage Page 22. The 4th panel is actually a reference to @songofblackwolf‘s Sign of the Moon fic. A story which helped me and my wife during the Starco drought in S3. Star and Marco yelled the same thing during their confession in chapter 1 Enjoy!

It only took 173 chapters.....worth it
