We had to write a Mini Comic for my Illustration Class so I did mine based on The Frog and The Scorpion. Hopefully you all know the story! 

But if you don’t know the story… In the original the scorpion stings the frog in the middle of the river. When the frog asks “why” the scorpion says “it’s in my nature” and they both die. I like my ending more.

Done with watercolor and pen and ink nib.

I always thought this story was fucked up, even when I heard it as a very young child. I even got put in the naughty corner, and a star next to my name crossed off for questioning it.

This story is so much better, and I like it’s message much more.

If it was based on social attitudes from the 70s, then it would make much more sense to have female space marines (not like other girls because of enhancements) but not Adepta Sororitas, not guardswomen and not female assassins, all of which are in the rulebook, in opposition to female marines.

If it would be because of social attitudes, it wouldn’t make sense if there would be unenhanced female warriors.

I…you know the SoB more or less have served the role of cordoning off women from the “big boy’s table” right? The late 70 and early 80s (when Warhammer 40k was getting on its feet) weren’t alien to the idea of a strong woman or a fighter, they just had to be lesser than the dude. Indiana Jones, the Terminator (1 and 2), Star Wars (in Princess Leia), literally EVERY Bond Girl who picks up a gun or has a cool backstory about being a spy, all of them are fighting women who are still inferior to and have less bearing on the plot than their male counterparts. 

Leia doesn’t beat Vader, or challenge the Emperor, or even engage the Death Star in any capacity, Sarah Connor needs to be saved constantly and is safe only when she sits down and listens to a man. The Jones and Bond girls almost always just serve as eye candy or have some bearing on the plot that vanishes soon after Jones or Bond start having their showdowns. None of this is condemnation of those movies, I absolutely adore most of them, but the reality is that was what the social situation at the time was like. When Warhammer 40k pulled itself from the brains of its writers, it was in a context wasn’t adverse to fighting women, only women who were inferior to the men. And since Warhammer 40k is an ongoing series, it deserves to be looked at in terms of the social structures it’s pulled into the modern day. Indiana Jones is over, done, it’s just a cultural relic now, but 40k is still bringing all the baggage of the time it was created with it.

And guess what the SoB are? Inferior to the Space Marines in almost every respect, treated with damn near contempt by the setting, and rarely, if ever, have bearing on the plot. That’s perfectly in line with the social and media trends I described above. 

Like, every time someone wants lady marines, they’re shunted over to the SoB instead. The Space Marines are absolutely based on the social standards of the 70s, where “strong female character” meant someone who was good at punching (but never as good as the male protagonist), where women didn’t get anywhere near the same level as respect or care as the men, where sexualization was so rampant that it wasn’t even questioned (a standard that has hardly improved). All of that is what Space Marines and their relationship to the setting (and the setting’s relationship to women in general) is derived from.
