Okay So. This is my best friend, Jayde, who is 18. They’ve been going through absolute hell their whole life and due to COVID and money troubles and moving issues they’ve been unable to make the trek across the country to join me and their friends in my state as planned.

They are non-binary, panromantic, and asexual, living in a house of extremist Christians that think that Trump literally is the second coming of God, and have now bought weapons to defend against liberals. They have had their clothes and personal items torn, they have been threatened, and regularly have to listen to rants about how “qweers” and “antifa” will go to hell. Their mother have stolen money from their bank account and taken away their bedroom door as punishments, and they have their privacy constantly violated, from looking through bank statements to searching their room for anything incriminating.

They have been suicidal in the past and their parents have claimed that their past abusive boyfriends were their fault and have twisted every word that comes from their mouth. They want nothing more than to get away from their parents that abuse them and siblings that violate their privacy and snitch on things they see that the parents don’t allow(like calling their friends and staying up past midnight).

Something has happened today that has made this situation much more horrifying. Today, after their shift at work, they found that someone had broken into their room and severely messed with their heater and lights, and when they confronted their brother, the only one home during the day, their mom accused them of being a liar and having done it themselves, sparking an argument. Jayde left to go get dressed to bring the groceries in from the car, and when they left their room, this happened. (Direct quote of them typing it out because they couldn’t talk through it all): 

Their mother then tried to pretend nothing happened like she hadn’t kicked them with winter boots on or left a bruise on their arm from dragging them so hard and proceeded to forcibly hug them, then forced them to continue to bring the groceries in. This is not a safe place for them to be, and they need to get out.

GOOD OMENS 2.05 • "The Ball"

God this is such an example of the problem all season. Over and over again Crowley tells Aziraphale I don't feel safe, but Aziraphale won't hear it.

Gabriel shows up, and Crowley doesn't even get a warning about it by Aziraphale. Crowley is terrified. Gabriel tried to kill Aziraphale! He's incredibly powerful. Crowley can't protect either of them if Gabriel is faking and tries to hurt them. He tells Aziraphale What I need is for him to be nowhere near the precious, peaceful, fragile existence I've carved out for myself. But Aziraphale only hears the "I" and responds "I thought we carved it out for ourselves." "So did I!" Crowley says, meaning, angel, why are you endangering both of us by keeping him here?? But Aziraphale won't budge.

Crowley watches Gabriel all the time. He's reserved and wary. He doesn't want to be left alone in the bookshop with him. He keeps poking and prodding, trying to see if it's just a trick. I know it hurts to remember. Do it anyway. / Remember properly.

He brings it up again before the Ball. What if he gets his memories back? He could smite me. When the Archangel Gabriel smites you, you stay smitten. Aziraphale just hears "smitten," and smiles, because he's thinking about the Ball and this romantic evening and how he wants to ask Crowley to dance with him. He's focused on that, and isn't hearing what Crowley is saying, which is I spent all night terrified, because he could hurt me/us.

Then the Ball happens and there is actual danger right outside the door, and he keeps trying to tell Aziraphale something's wrong, we're in danger. And Aziraphale still just wants to dance! He won't listen.

I feel like there's a repeating theme in S2 of lies and fantasy. We see the first time Aziraphale deliberately lies to Heaven in Job. Many other times, he plays up these overexaggerated roles. The magician, the newspaperman, the community organizer, the matchmaker. He's having fun, but he's not living in reality. Reality is difficult, and complicated, and messy, and he doesn't want to deal with it. Because facing it means that eventually, he going to have to grapple with the thing he's been avoiding for 6000 years, to finally hear what Crowley is trying to tell him: Heaven hurts people whether they deserve it or not. They are not Good. The world will be just as dead whether Heaven or Hell kills it.

And the thing is that Aziraphale knows. He’s known all along. The look of fear and panic on his face when Gabriel first turns up and asks to come in. The way he backs into the shop away from him. The look of sudden terror when he hears the arrival of the Archangels when Jim is in the shop alone.

But he doesn’t want to admit it. He’s taken 6000 years to step away from Heaven, but he and Crowley are both still dealing with the repercussions of all of those millennia. Crowley still hasn’t processed all that happened to him, which is why his instinct is always to jump out the situation before he’s hurt again. Aziraphale has never been able to get that clean cut between what he’s been told and what is actually true.

Better to play-act and pretend that everything is all fine and dandy, just like he did whenever he was in front of heaven. He’s brittle and too bright and too determined to try and keep everything the way it is. 

It all comes down to that line from the end of the Job arc: “I’m not going to tell anybody? Are you? Well then, nothing has to change.”

If they used their words, if they talked about everything, then there could be progress, but for millennia this has been their modus operandi. Keep things secret and quiet and nothing has to change.

But that’s the trouble with life. It does have to change. It’s big and it’s scary, but for progress to happen, things always have to change.

Q: What inspired you to have Crowley’s Bentley tapedeck turn everything into “The Best of Queen”?

Neil: Back in the days when all cars had cassette decks Terry Pratchett and I both noticed and talked about the fact that we had The Best of Queen tapes in our car we could not remember bying. And our theory was: all tapes turn in The Best of Queen. (x)

In the 90s when I listened to new music by checking CDs out from the library, The Best of Queen was one I checked out more than once. I can’t tell you how many times I’d go to play something and The Best of Queen would start playing, even if I didn’t remember having checked it out or putting it in the player. So when I read Neil’s explanation, I didn’t even question it. Oh yeah, I know all about that. 

Suspicious Crowley dialogues in season 1 episode 4:

"God, you listening? Great plan? Show me a great plan. (Pause like he waited for a response) (Change of tone, like he got an answer) Okay, I know you're testing them. You said you were gonna be testing them. You shouldn't test them to destruction. Not to the end of the world."

It's really weird because nothing else in GO says there was any test for anyone in modern times. Was Crowley conversing with God? What was the test? Who is it for and what does it do? Is the test the end of the world?

Does the Ineffable Plan include testing angels?

If God was talking to Crowley about her plans, and Crowley is participating actively in it, the theory that Crowley is or was Lucifer sounds more likely. It was only Lucifer that God made bets with or tested people with.
