smth to be said about aloto that's done v implicitly but is also v obvious imo:

jo being specifically a fat butch puts her the most at risk out of all the queer girls on the show

she's the one shirley clocks first; she's the one shirley is the most afraid of (which almost suggests that her fear of contagion is not just of becoming a lesbian, but specifically "one of those" lesbians); she's the one who is forced to perform femininity the most out of the three butches on the show, bc her fatness makes it impossible for her to walk the "tomboy" line of plausible deniability/don't ask don't tell; she's the one who, in the end, gets arrested and jailed and traded out because she was the most easily picked out of the crowd by the police as "not the right kind of woman"

it's about fatness immediately making someone gender non-conforming, the increased effort it takes to "pass" and the increased visibility and risk that comes with that, and the compound disgust a homophobic, misogynistic, fatphobic society feels for fat butch queer women carrying heavier consequences than for queer women who are not both fat and butch, and the risk of those consequences being exactly why it is so much more crucial for fat queer women to "pass" as straight in a homophobic context

and i think the show shows that aspect really, really well
