Frequently Answered Asks

While we do ask that folks take a look at our tags, we still get a slew of questions on the same topics again and again, time after time. While we love helping (why else would we be here?), consider this the ultimate post of tag links for those topics we get asked about all the time, and have a hefty number of resources for already.

If, after reviewing posts in these tags, nothing is applicable to your situation, please feel free to send us an ask. And if your question is pretty specific to your story, or you personally, we do often answer questions to those who post off Anon privately. In fact, to better serve everyone, we request that you ask more specific/personal questions off Anon as if it’s too specific/personal, it’s likely an Anon posing such questions won’t get answered in a timely fashion. (And you can always request us to answer your question privately, too!)

Frequently Asked Questions Tags:

These people have generously offered their expertise for when you have questions specific to areas that we may not be as well versed in and/or able to answer in a timely manner (and if you want to be added to either of these, let us know):

Keep in mind that we have tons of tags on various topics. These are just ones we tend to get questions about A LOT. Bookmark this link. Reblog it. Save it. Learn it. Bop it. Twist it. Shake it.

With the exception of The Writer’s Editors not being active anymore, here’s a masterlist of our FAQ’s.

Fantasy Wardrobe: Popular Men's Fashion of History

Fashion is one of my favourite worldbuilding components and choosing which way I want characters to look, is one part of research that is more fun than work. The use of different styles give each culture a defined feel and could act as a symbol of all kinds of lands in your WIP. Since it is your WIP, you can play with different elements of the garments and pay fast and loose with the styles.

Shirt

The shirt is the key to every other item of clothing on this list. The shirt was always worn under everything. It was often made of linen and worn by all classes. The shirt was often embroidered with blackwork and was sometimes even able to peak out from slashings in the garment over it. Shirts were seen as an intimate item of clothing. You should hear about the chaos that occurred when Anne Boleyn found out that Katherine of Aragon was still sewing Henry VIII's shirts.

Tunic

The tunic was worn by all classes. The tunic could be sleeveless or with sleeves. Tunics usually reached the knee or mid thigh when worn in hot climates and could be cut to the hip like a regular shirt today. They were belted at the waist.

Doublet

The doublet was a jacket worn over a man's undershirt. The doublet was usually laced or buttoned up at the front, reaching from the neck of the wearer to the hip of the waist. The doublet was often padded in order to keep the wearer warm.

Jerkin

The jerkin is a tight fitted jacket worn again over the shirt that is buttoned or laced at the front. The jerkin could be worn with or without sleeves. Leather was a popular material for these to be made and was worn by both classes.

Breeches

Are pants. Most breeches stopped at the knee though some reached the ankle, similar to today's trousers. Breeches could be in laced at the front and were worn by every class of men.

Hose

These were a style of pants that usually ended above the knee. Hose were often worn with a codpiece, a rather bold fashion statement for men. Hose would have also been worn with stockings held up by garters. Hose might be padded at the things to add some flare to the look.

Overgown

The overgown is rather like a great loose jacket worn over the doublet or jerkin. It was usually sewn with fur for warmth and made of contrasting fabric than what lay underneath.

Justacorps

This is the classic knee-length coat worn by men 18th century. Men would wear this over a waistcoat and shirt. This was a popular fashion for highborn men. It does still look fine.

Kaftan/ Caftan/Boubou

This is a large robe that is pulled on over the head with long sleeves. It can have a v-neck or round neck. They are usually heavily embroidered.

Achkan/Sherwani

This is the long coat worn by Indian men. It is usually buttoned up at the front, reaches just below the knees and is long sleeved.

ARGUMENT IDEAS

Here are some things that your characters could argue about:

  • what to have for dinner
  • one of them was late to/forgot about an event
  • one of them spoiled a book/movie/tv show/etc for the other(s)
  • which one of them gets the window seat on a plane
  • whether the toilet paper roll should hang over or under
  • opposing opinions on a movie/book/tv show/song/etc
  • one of them ate the other(s)’s leftovers without asking
  • which tv show/movie to watch
  • how to pronounce a word that they all say differently
  • one of them didn’t text/call the other(s) back
  • opposing political opinions
  • what to name a new pet
  • one of them lost to the other(s) in a board game/video game/sport/etc and has accused them of cheating
  • which member of a band/group is the cutest
  • one of them is really messy and the other(s) is/are tired of cleaning up after them
  • what the correct words are to a lyric in a song that neither of them can decipher
  • whether “the dress” is blue and black or gold and white / whether they hear laurel or yanny / other similar memes
  • one of them had borrowed something from the other(s) and did not return it
  • whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza
  • which of them loves the other(s) the most

Character Details to Hide from Your Readers

Hiding information from your readers on purpose will help you create tension in your novel. I know this doesn’t work for every novel, but if you’re writing something with elements of suspense and mystery, hiding details and revealing them later will improve your story. This also helps add dimensions to your characters and explore their motivations on a deeper level.

Here are a few things to hide about your characters to create tension:

Whether or not your protagonist is lying

Even good characters lie, especially if they feel like it will protect other people in the long run. There are ways to hint that your character is hiding the truth without actually revealing what the truth is. If your protagonist gets nervous or changes the subject when they’re asked about a specific detail, this will help show your readers that something isn’t quite right. If your character’s deception is hidden and then revealed at the right time, you’ll be able to add exciting tension and shock value to your story.

Who the real villain is

Some of the best tension is created when we’re uncertain about who the real villain is. In mystery/crime novels, for example, there’s often evidence that points to one person who ends up not really being the one we need to worry about. If you hide this information from your readers, you keep them guessing throughout the course of your novel and this will aid in creating suspense.

The truth about their past

When you hide your character’s past from your readers, you have the ability to use it as an explanation for something important later on. For example, if you character has these mysterious powers they can’t explain, you can use their parents and back story in order to reveal later on why it’s happening. Revealing past details slowly over the course of your novel helps build the mystery.

What their secondary goals are

Sometimes characters will have goals no one else knows about but them OR they will have a false goal that their using to cover up their real goal. For example, a character might say they’re rescuing another character because they want to help, but it really might be all about finding some hidden treasure along the way. There are many reasons why a character might want to hide their goals. Explore character motivations on a deeper level and you’ll be able to realistically include this type of deception in your story.

Kisses I want to write about:

Goodbye kisses: Lingering and hard for longer times apart. Ones that curve A’s body against B’s and cause hands to splay against backs. Or short pecks, maybe not even completely on the mouth for short trips to the grocery store. Hello kisses: After long periods apart, these can include A picking up B and spinning them around. Fingers pressing into cheeks, palms cupping necks, and breathless laughs when they finally come up for air. Breathless kisses: A series of short pecks because they need the closeness but they also need air, so. Sometimes smiles come in between, or sometimes its just breath, gasping for the sole purpose of being able to kiss again. Heated kisses: Breath huffing into mouths, angrily or passionately. Hands grabbing at clothing and pulling each other closer. First kisses: Hesitant and nervous. Lips hover inches from each other for a few seconds before they just barely brush. It’s just a soft press, but it ignites their entire bodies. Pinkies link afterwards, still wanting to be close, and each looks down, smiling softly. After sex kisses: Lazy, slow presses. Limbs pressed together, chests heaving. Soft murmurs about what to do for dinner later, fingers trailing down backs, tracing lazy patterns. B rolling onto their back and A trailing their lips down their neck, kissing their shoulder, their chest, anywhere they can think of, memorizing B. Morning kisses: Barely awake kisses that usually end up on jaws or cheeks because A is too tired to land it properly. B makes a sleepy sound and rolls into A, nuzzling their face into their neck, ankles hooking together, while A drapes their arms around B and they fall back asleep for a while. Post-break up kisses: Soft and slow. Hands on each other’s arms in a way that neither can tell if the other is pushing away or pulling closer. The kiss ends with their foreheads pressed together, neither wanting it to be true that this is happening. Christmas kisses: More smile than actual kiss. A holds mistletoe above their heads while B rolls their eyes, but pulls A down by the collar of their ugly Christmas sweater for a heated kiss. A takes B by the waist and walks forward until they are around the corner, away from the prying eyes and hoots of the rest of their friends and family. Comforting kisses: B walks into find A sitting on the bed, shoulders shaking, cheeks wet. A looks up, face looking stricken for a moment. B is shocked, and quietly says A’s name. At this, A breaks, face crumpling, and only barely has time to reach both hands out for B before B is there, kneeling at A’s feet. B takes A’s hands first, kissing their knuckles and palms. Then B reaches up to hold A’s face, pressing soft kisses around their cheeks, their lips, murmuring “it’s okay” and “you’re alright” and “I’m here” in between. “I thought I lost you” kisses: The breath is knocked out of both of them with the force that they collide with. Hands grip the back of t-shirts and palms are pressed up and under shirts, holding them close, feeling the warmth of their skin. Palms are pressed to cheeks, thumbs swiping away tears until their mouths collide messily, the world seeming to disappear around them. “We can’t do this” kisses: Fists clenched, hands shoved into pockets. Brows low or brought together, jaws clenched. A feeling like a magnetic pull between them. Their foreheads press together, their lips brush, just barely, until B pulls away with a shaking exhale, forehead dropping into A’s neck. “Come to bed” kisses: A has their hands on B’s neck, murmuring the phrase softly. A’s hands slide down B’s arms to their hands, lacing their fingers together and slowly starting to pull B towards their bedroom. A continues to pepper B with kisses all the while, trailing them down their jaw and neck. “You look beautiful” kisses: Just a soft press of lips to the temple, resting them there for a moment, then smiling down and telling them as much. “I’ll be right back” kisses: A puts their hands on B’s shoulders from behind them, where they are sat on the couch. He leans down and around, while B turns his head a little, accepting the quick peck. “I missed you” kisses: Long and relentless, holding their body close, arms wrapped completely around their waist. A burying their head in B’s neck and pressing kisses there too. Angry kisses: Hard, gripping. Fists in clothes, shoving each other against walls. Fingers digging into hips. But the kisses always melt away from that. They turn into brushes of lips between shaking breaths, until they’re out of energy and are left just standing there, holding each other, fingers carding through hair. Sad kisses: Almost not a kiss at all. Just holding onto each other tightly, A’s lips pressed to B’s temple, whispering soft words, desperately trying to provide whatever comfort they can. In the dark kisses: The movie plays in the background, but A and B are hardly paying attention from the back row. They kiss soundlessly, long and soft, fingers locked. A’s arm is thrown behind B’s seat, wrist bent to curl their fingers into B’s hair. Dying kisses: A holds B in their arms, panicked, crying. Murmurs of “no, no, no.” Salt on their lips from tears. Voice cracking. Holding on tightly to their shirt, their shoulder, their hand, roughly pulling them against their body, anything to try and keep them tethered to this earth. Kissing them as they die (“no. No, stay awake—“), Kissing them once more even with the life has left their body (No. God, come back. Please, come back. Please, look at me, I’m right here”).

There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without infringing copyright! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone else’s work and pass it off as our own.

Advice for writing about small towns

So I come from a small (midwestern) town. And I mean - an actual small town (less than 1,500 population). I’ve lived in towns of under 500 population, and in towns of about 2,500 population, and in towns of 15k population, and in cities of 100k, and currently in a 700k city.

So here’s some things about small towns you might not know if you’ve never lived in one:

  • If it’s got a population higher than 30 thousand, it’s not a small town. It’s just a town. Hell, I’d probably argue that if it has a population higher than 10 thousand it’s not small town, but I’m being generous. However the people in towns 30k–50k probably think they’re in a small town (they’re not).
  • The experience is vastly different depending on how far you are from a small-large city. And by that I mean - the people are vastly different.
  • Are you less than 60min drive to a city of 80k+ population? the people are probably less likely to be farmers, more likely to work in said small-large city and commute (which doesn’t mean that everyone commutes or that no one is a farmer). The people probably lean slightly to the right of the closest city, but aren’t necessarily staunch conservatives. The town sizes probably bottom out around 2k min.
  • Are you more than 2hrs drive from a city of 80k+ population? The town is more self-sufficient. Most work within their small town or a nearby small town. Depending on the terrain, more people are farmers. They’re probably mostly conservative, both socially and fiscally. The town sizes could be as small as 300 people.
  • The farther from the city, the more likely to be conservative, more likely to be farmers (depending on the terrain).
  • Population 15k+:
  • This town probably has a (singular) hospital, several doctor’s offices, probably a dozen department stores - and if it’s rural enough, probably a couple kinds of hardware/diy type stores (lowe’s, menard’s, home depot etc.)
  • There are several options for vets and at least one emergency vet
  • 1-2 dozen hotels
  • If it’s got anything touristy, double the hotels (2-3 dozen) - touristy being water, especially large lakes, hiking trails, fesitvals, nearby ski resort - any thing that would draw people there on vacation, even if it’s only people from that region
  • Also add a “down town” area - boutiques, nice restaurants, probably a theatre
  • It has at least 4 options of elementary schools, and 3 options each for middle and high schools. It might have a community college (but probably not). There are private or charter options, specifically for religious students
  • There are multiple denominations of churches (catholic, lutheran, baptist, episcopal etc). Depending on ethnic make-up, it may or may not have a synagogue. It probably won’t have a mosque.
  • If it’s in a rural-ish area (the closest towns are all smaller) it probably has some kind of shopping mall. If it’s the smaller town, it may not.
  • It’ll have several bars, probably clustered in a central location, with a few others a little farther out from that area.
  • This town has a few coffee shops (3-10), but may or may not have an actual starbucks. At least one is a local place, at least one is a chain (starbucks, dunkin, biggby).
  • People drive everywhere. There is a bus system, but only the “down town” area would have issues finding parking. Most businesses/hotels have their own parking lot.
  • Most people live in houses but there are a few (3-7) apartment complexes, most of which are several buildings
  • There will be lots of restaurants, mostly chains or small mom & pop places, with at least a couple niceish options
  • This town might even have its own airport, but likely only serves regional flights to “nearby” larger towns/cities. Regional means like, less than 2hr flights, so that’s probably a bigger distance than you’d think.
  • There are dozens of gas stations and at least a dozen fast food places
  • Is it on a freeway? increase the gas stations, fast food places, department stores etc.
  • This town probably has a rec-type center with a community pool and courts and what not. There are several options of gyms.
  • Population 10k ish:
  • May or may not have a hospital - if it does, it’s small. A few doctor’s offices, a couple of department stores, at least one hardware/diy type
  • A few vets, may or may not have an emergency vet
  • a dozen or so hotels. again - double that if it’s got smth that would attract people, especially water.
  • may or may not have a “down town” area
  • 2-4 options at least of elementary, 2-3 options of middle and high school. No community college.
  • Still at least a few options of churches. Still might have a synagogue, still probably doesn’t have a mosque.
  • Probably doesn’t have a shopping mall, but might have a “business district - basically a few intersections with most of the stores, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Probably has at least two, maybe three coffee shops. At least one is a chain.
  • Probably doesn’t have its own bus system unless it’s near enough to a town of 15k+ or more - people drive everywhere. There’s plenty of parking.
  • Most people live in houses, but there are a couple of apartment complexes. Mostish of the houses have yards, but some might not.
  • A few options of restaurants, but maybe only 1-2 niceish places. A couple chain, a couple mom & pop.
  • It would be strange for this town to have an airport. May have a landing strip at most, but unlikely.
  • There are probably half a dozen to a dozen gas stations. Several fast food places.
  • Is it on a freeway? increase the gas stations, fast food
  • This town might have a community rec center w/pool. Still a couple options of gyms.
  • Population 5k ish:
  • This town doesn’t have a hospital. It probably has 1-3 doctor’s offices. At least one department store
  • 2-3 vets, likely no emergency vet
  • 3-8 ish hotels or inns
  • Might have a quaint but very small “down town” area
  • Likely only 2 options of schools, maybe only one high school. Possible to go to school with same people your whole life
  • 2-3 options for churches. Probably doesn’t have a synagogue unless there’s a large Jewish population
  • There’s no shopping mall of any kind, but probably has an area where most of the businesses are - at most 2-3 intersections worth
  • Probably has a coffee shop or two, but might not. Could be a chain or a local - but probably a local.
  • There’s no bus system unless it’s near enough to a town of 15k+. People drive everywhere.
  • Most everyone lives in houses. Most if not all have yards. There might be 1-2 apartment complexes but maybe not.
  • There are a few restaurants - mix of chain and mom & pop places. Might have a nice restaurant, but only one.
  • There’s no airport.
  • There are probably 2-6 gas stations, maybe 1-2 fast food.
  • Is it on a free way? increase the gas stations and fast food.
  • Likely does not have its own rec center/pool, but probably has 1-2 options of gyms.
  • Population under 2k ish:
  • No hospital. Probably has one doctor’s office, but might not if it’s close enough to a larger “small” town. No department stores, but probably at least one, maybe 2 decent grocery stores. Could be a local chain or a mom & pop.
  • Probably has a vet’s office, but just one.
  • 1-2 inns/motels. If it’s an older town, it has like, a street that’s mostly made of older style buildings and is the “down town” - just a couple of blocks
  • Just one school system - elementary through high school. Everyone goes through the same school - you probably graduate with the same people you went to kindergarten with
  • 1-2 churches. Probably no synagogue
  • There is probably a generalish area where the store/post office/school/etc is, but those are probably just as surrounded by homes and yards as everything else.
  • This town probably doesn’t have a coffee shop, and if it does, it’s local, not a chain.
  • There’s no bus system unless it’s close enough to a town of 15k+. People drive.
  • There might be an apartment complex. Everything else is houses. The houses pretty much all have some kind of yard.
  • There are probably two restaurants, probably both local. Nothing fancy.
  • No airport.
  • Probably 2ish gas stations.
  • Is it on a free way? add a gas station and a fast food restaurant.
  • There’s no rec center (unless maybe an outdoor like, field type rec center), but still likely has at least one gym.

I could keep going down but I think you get the idea. If you’re writing about an actual town, do research on its population. If you’re making up a town, think about what size you need it to be to have the things you want (or don’t want).

If your “small town” has more than one hospital, it’s not a small town. If it’s got a population above 10k, there is definitely more than one (and likely, many) hotels.

Is it near decent-sized water (largeish lake, ocean)? People probably have vacation homes there. That increases property value and tourism. Even if it’s not a like, nationally-known vacation spot, people within 100-200 miles could likely make weekend trips there.

Is it the largest town within 75-100 miles, even if it’s under 20k? it’s probably got more department stores and other such industry bc it’s serving a population greater than its own. if there are other towns nearby of equal-to-larger size, it might need less of those things.

expressions and how others see them

In writing, the expressions and body languages of our characters are very important; there are a few nifty tricks to convey meaning through facial expressions. Here’s a cheat sheet!

1) Discomfort

Rocking back on their heels because they want to escape the conversation, adjusting their weight on the seat because they’re uncomfortable, folding their arms tight across their chest; everyone expresses their disinterest or interest in different ways. Usually, out bodies pick up on the ‘this is wrong’ feeling, and try to settle so we feel comfortable. They chew on their bottom lip, their eyes flicking away before they’re forced to make eye-contact. They’re perched on the edge of their seat, ready to flee at a moments notice.

2) Sadness

Sadness is an emotion we tend to try and hide. It can lead to subsections of feelings, like embarrassment or guilt over whatever is causing us sadness. Your character’s eyes burn with the effort to hold back tears, and people see them visibly on edge; they’re shaking, they’re chewing on their lip in an effort to force the negative feelings away. Their brow is furrowed and they turn their body away from people like they’re trying to hide. When it gets too bad, their shoulders shake with the force of their tears, the heels of their palms pressing against their eyes in an attempt to push the tears back in. Their nose is runny and their face is splotchy, their eyes red-rimmed and the bags that lurk under concealer are exposed.

3) Anger

We all know anger. It’s where your cheeks flush and you feel hot and dizzy, all logical thought replaced with a burning need to get rid of whatever caused to feel this way in the first place. People see your character, their back straight and their shoulder square, barely keeping the adrenaline restrained to their body. Their eyes are narrowed, their fists are clenched, and the air around them seems to spark with electricity. They can’t keep still, or they’re too still; pacing or ramrod straight in their chair, their cheek twitching with a previously unnoticed tick.

4) Happiness

It’s a bit harder to pinpoint this when you feel it. Your character is floating on air, the air around them thrumming with glee at whatever has happened. Others see the smile that tugs their lips upward, the way the corners of their eyes crease and crinkle in a hidden grin. Their hands clasp together, and they press their fingers into the fat of their cheeks, bashful in how utterly content they feel. Their shoulders are relaxed as they dance around the kitchen, and the serene expression that coats their face is beautiful.

5) Guilt

The child that has their hands caught in the cookie jar, the accidental killer; guilt varies and expresses itself in different ways. Their eyes flick to the ceiling and their lips pull together tightly to avoid spilling the truth. They look down at their clasped hands, resting their head on the inside of their wrist so their hand covers their eyes. They’re self-conscious about what people can tell about them from their appearance, and they tug at their hair, pulling their shoulders tight together in a protective barrier.

6) Disgust

Disgust; at someone or something, a situation or place. Your character turns their nose up, and scrunches it at the putrid smells that hangs in the air. Their chin juts out arrogantly, the feelings of pride evident over this thing that is so clearly lesser. Their shoulders tense, and they step carefully to avoid anything they don’t want to touch. Their lips are a thin line, a barrage of insults dancing on the tip of their tongue. They squeeze their eyes closed for a quick moment, trying to regain their composure. They roll their eyes and cock their hip, ready to prove why exactly this thing is so horrible and disgusting.

7) Jealousy

Jealousy, over a person or thing. Material wealth or power. The tips of their ears burn red and their fists clench by their side, their lips pulling upward in the mockery of a snarl. Redness creeps down their neck, and they turn their nose up at whoever—or whatever—they are jealous of. They stare at a person, a shadow looming over their face as they furrow their brow and purse their lips to avoid ripping into them about why exactly their thing belongs to them.

8) Lust

They convey it with the intent to follow through, and they throw their all into letting the subject of their affection know. Their chest puffs out, their back straightens to show off height or how slender they are, and they stare at the subject from under heavy lashes. A light blushes dances over their cheeks and the bridge of their nose but they carry on, pointing their knees toward the subject and leaning into their personal space. They bite their lip, and they move to brush a lock of hair behind their ear, like they’re brushing away any nerves to do with the situation. Their lips part so they can breathe easier, and they set their brow in a firm line, the picture of confidence as they place their hand on the subject’s arms.

And that’s it for now! All these emotions have subsections where they can intersect or branch off, so plan your emotions wisely and see where you can align these actions to match multiple emotions!

A backstory is one of the essential parts of a character. It dictates the character’s mindset, place in the world and their subsequent arc throughout a story. A character’s backstory is the key for opening the vault of character options, ideas and journeys. The reason for this principle is due to cause and effect. It is the answer for why your characters act and think a certain way. For example, Bruce Wayne doesn’t become Batman just because he wants to. He becomes Batman because of his parents death. He wants to make sure that no other child in Gotham will suffer the same traumatic event he did, so he then becomes Batman. This character is an excellent example of using backstory in writing since it uses the cause and effect method.

What is Backstory

As I said before, backstory should be about explaining how your character got into their specific state at the beginning of the story. It is merely answering the subconscious questions in a reader’s mind. Why are they acting like this? Why do they want this goal? How did they get to that specific mindset? It is a device to give a character history, so it is not like they appear out of nowhere for this particular story, but rather, they were a person all along. This principle makes a character a real person with depth and breadth.

Why is Backstory Important

Backstory is one of the key features of any character, and it should not be ignored. Backstory does not need to complicated but rather a simple explanation. A character might be struggling with parenthood. Their backstory is that they had a rough childhood that damaged the way they seek familial relationships. There. Done. All backstory needs to do is show how a character’s past has shaped their present. Not only this but backstory paves the road for character development. Backstory can provide the lie your character believes or the moral belief that holds them back from being the best that they can be. It will give you the foundations and beginnings of character development.

How to Communicate Backstory

Since backstory is events that take place in the past and not directly in the narrative, it is sometimes hard to tell your audience about it without having lengthy exposition. It is crucial to make sure that backstory isn’t revealed without context. It would make no sense for a character to start monologuing about how his parents died, and how he must avenge them when he is eating breakfast. Moreover, by pacing the release of your character’s backstory, it gives them more mystery and suspense. There are several different ways to communicate backstory while keeping suspense. You can use diary entries to communicate backstory. This concept usually has a story in a story principal and shows readers a deeper, more raw version of a character. Another way you can communicate backstory is through flashbacks or dream sequences. It is important that these sequences don’t come out of anywhere but have a believable trigger. For example, if a character is in a situation which has a similarity in their backstory, you would explore that.
