talia,

otherwise known as the daughter of the demon, is the daughter of batman’s long-time immortal foe, ra’s al ghul. she was introduced in detective comics #411 by dennis o’neil, where she candidly unmasked batman to tend to his wounds after they were captured by doctor darrk. the relationship that developed between them in the following decades was complicated, with talia caught between her love for bruce and her loyalty to ra’s. over time, she forged an identity for herself that rendered her one of the most nuanced members of the batman mythos until her character re-vamp by grant morrison in batman & son.

this list covers a comprehensive, chronological, in-continuity timeline of her character prior to its assassination. elseworld’s titles have been ignored, as have other media such as shows, films, video games, etc. the goal of this list is to give a cohesive account of talia’s pre-morrison character arc. not every single appearance is included here due to instances of mischaracterization (see the end of this post), but this nonetheless covers almost all of the bases.

also, thank you so much to @harunosakurasfor making the above banner! you can check out her account for more stellar comic edits 😊

introduction (1971-1980) 🗡️

most of these issues have been compiled into tales of the demon, with the exception of batman #257, black lightning: year one #3-4, and the brave and the bold #159.

  • detective comics #411
  • batman 232, 235, 240, 243-44, 257
  • black lightning: year one #3-4 — i think these issues are a better re-interpretation of black lightning’s origins in terms of their talia characterization than black lightning (1977) #2.
  • dc special series #15 — there’s some racist writing, namely of ra’s drugging bruce and wedding him to talia under preconceived notions regarding marriage in eastern cultures, but the marriage is rendered moot within the issue and treated as a one-note plot point.
  • detective comics #485
  • the brave and the bold #159
  • detective comics #490

Suicide Squad #49, Batman Chronicles #5: Oracle: Year One

Okay so

I feel like early post-paralysis Babs definitely has a fear of being victimized again which makes sense for her situation, but also makes it when she sees the joker later as oracle and is unaffected by him and he means nothing to her makes it more powerful because she no longer has that fear and she is in control.

Batman Chronicles #5: oracle year one: born of hope

Something I really like in Oracle: Year One is the way the authors directly address in text the narrative in killing joke, where Barbara getting hurt was just to fuel some man's pain (also previous writers who viewed her as a weaker version of batman when she was batgirl). I feel like the way it is described by @mollyhats here (link) as "de-fridging" really fits it.

(also like. please read that whole post before you get mad at the title)

Young Justice Season 1 couples: Casual Redesigns

So I’ve finally got jacket designs for the couples of season 1. Kaldur is the only other character I’m planning on doing from this show (except maybe Blue Beetle because he’s kinda just too cool not to), but that said, I’m going to take a break from this project for a while. Anyways, hope the throwback art gives someone a little joy for the evening. That’s all I hope for.

Love y’all <3 <3

Babs and Cass, Behind the Scenes of Success

Redraw 2 years later

Top: April, 2023

Bottom: April, 2021

One of the hardest parts of being a sister is having the courage to step into the spotlight when it is your turn, the self-confidence to step out when it is not, and the strength to be happy without jealousy.

One of my favorite things in both comic art and fanart is when Damian is drawn as just a little bit of spiky hair in the bottom of the frame. He’s too small, he can’t reach

Tim: Can we stay with you tonight?

Dick: Both of you? What happened?

Damian: Someone was playing with an ouija board and cursed the whole Manor.

Tim: Jason wasn’t any help. He doesn’t know how to banish spirits, so he’s just throwing salt at them yelling “does this look like a hotel to you!?”

Titans: *Berates Jason to the point where he contemplates suicide after accusing him of something with ZERO proof and RIGHT AFTER he went through a giant traumatic experience*
Also Titans: Deathstroke and Scarecrow turned Jason into a killer.
Me watching Jason as Red Hood after everyone in Titans treated him like absolute trash for a whole season:
“Kill them. Kill them all, I don’t really care at this point.”

I agree that Batman should be written as a better parent, but y’all can’t come out here and claim he isn’t abusive. He is. It sucks and to fix it- we must acknowledge it.

desperate for a tv show filmed like modern family or the kardashians of the batfam, titled “watch out for the waynes” or something like that.

bruce signed for the limited series to keep up appearances.

dick acts like a love island contestant.

damian is only ever in the corner of shots, staring into the soul of the cameraman.

cass, similarly, does not contribute much, but looks to the camera like she’s in modern family whenever shit happens.

tim finds every way to be the last laugh, the one-liner guy, the “unexpected, effortless, fan favourite™️”.

duke frequents the interview room.

jason sends subtextual messages to the audience through the books he’s seen reading in a scene:

bruce and tim are having a tiff about who’s idea is better while jason’s reading “the metamorphoses - book iii 339-358” (narcissus).

everyone’s having a grand old time at a gala while jason’s at a table reading “vile bodies”.

damian’s in a mood and nobody’s picked up on it yet while jason is seen reading “american psycho”.

nobody can find steph and tim and jason’s sat literally reading the back of a “dazed and confused” dvd to get his point across.

Ok kind of a hot take but-

Imagine Tim gets Jason to do all his English homework for him that revolves around Shakespeare because he knows Jason enjoys Shakespeare. Jason acts like he hates doing Tims Shakespeare homework for him but he secretly loves it and Tim knows. Bruce would say something but he’s really just happy his boys are getting along

🥺🥺

None of the batkids give a flying fuck about being Bruce’s favorite. They all want to be Dick’s favorite.

Jason: Obviously I’m the favorite he’s known me the longest I’m his little Jaybird

Tim: Does it really count if most of that time was him hating you for replacing him or you were dead?

Tim: Meanwhile he hasn’t even tried to kill me once haH

Damian: Todd and I really set the bar low for you didn’t we?

Damian: Not that it matters anyway, Grayson prefers my company 10 times more than the likes of you, I’m his baby brother tt

Cass: Likes me most

Stephanie: After you wiped the floor with him 2 weeks straight at training, no man’s ego is strong enough to survive that and not hold a grudge, even Dick’s

Cass: >:(

Stephanie: It just makes sense that I’m the favorite having to live with someone bumps them down considerably, less exposure makes the heart grow fonder

Duke: Then that can’t be right because you never seem to leave. I’m the only one not raining down doom and gloom constantly, he must find that refreshing meaning I’M the favorite

——————————————————————————

Dick: What? Oh, Barbara’s my favorite
