someday, in the distant future, humans will once again be capable of hearing the phrase “what is love” without also feeling the primal urge to  respond with “baby don’t hurt me”

So at that point, people will say “baby don’t hurt me”…no more?

I tried to scroll past I really did

beautiful set up, perfect follow-through. great teamwork everyone

This actually did happen to a real person, and the real person was me. I had gone to catch a train. This was April 1976, in Cambridge, U.K. I was a bit early for the train. I’d gotten the time of the train wrong. I went to get myself a newspaper to do the crossword, and a cup of coffee and a packet of cookies. I went and sat at a table. I want you to picture the scene. It’s very important that you get this very clear in your mind. Here’s the table, newspaper, cup of coffee, packet of cookies. There’s a guy sitting opposite me, perfectly ordinary-looking guy wearing a business suit, carrying a briefcase. It didn’t look like he was going to do anything weird. What he did was this: he suddenly leaned across, picked up the packet of cookies, tore it open, took one out, and ate it. Now this, I have to say, is the sort of thing the British are very bad at dealing with. There’s nothing in our background, upbringing, or education that teaches you how to deal with someone who in broad daylight has just stolen your cookies. You know what would happen if this had been South Central Los Angeles. There would have very quickly been gunfire, helicopters coming in, CNN, you know… But in the end, I did what any red-blooded Englishman would do: I ignored it. And I stared at the newspaper, took a sip of coffee, tried to do a clue in the newspaper, couldn’t do anything, and thought, what am I going to do? In the end I thought, Nothing for it, I’ll just have to go for it, and I tried very hard not to notice the fact that the packet was already mysteriously opened. I took out a cookie for myself. I thought, That settled him. But it hadn’t because a moment or two later he did it again. He took another cookie. Having not mentioned it the first time, it was somehow even harder to raise the subject the second time around. “Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice …” I mean, it doesn’t really work. We went through the whole packet like this. When I say the whole packet, I mean there were only about eight cookies, but it felt like a lifetime. He took one, I took one, he took one, I took one. Finally, when we got to the end, he stood up and walked away. Well, we exchanged meaningful looks, then he walked away, and I breathed a sigh of relief and sat back. A moment or two later the train was coming in, so I tossed back the rest of my coffee, stood up, picked up the newspaper, and underneath the newspaper were my cookies. The thing I like particularly about this story is the sensation that somewhere in England there has been wandering around for the last quarter-century a perfectly ordinary guy who’s had the same exact story, only he doesn’t have the punch line.

Douglas Adams, well known for writing The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy shares a very British story (via girliwannatouchyourmind)

Another Day in White Supremacy (8/26/17): The absolute piece of shit known as Joe Arpaio should be rotting in a jail cell, but the even more disgusting, festering pestilence known as Donald Trump pardoned him today. Using the cover of an oncoming hurricane, and the slow news day of a Friday, Trump also signed a ban on the military paying for reassignment surgery (more on that later). Absolutely disgusted! (x

You don’t know how horrifically depressing this really is unless you’ve lived in Phoenix. I’m shaking with rage. Whatever you might be picturing, Arpaio has done worse. He filled the Sheriff’s department with literal white supremacists. He treats people like garbage. He spent outrageous amounts of money that could have been used on actually making the area better on all the legal costs of repeatedly breaking the law. And he wasn’t even any good at his actual job. There is literally no metric by which he was not a complete disaster, and yet his PR was so good that most (white) people just knew him as being “tough on crime” which he actually fucking wasn’t. It took us SO long to finally expose his garbage enough that people listened, we were finally going to see him suffer some tiny fraction of the consequences he deserved, and even that meager scrap it’s now being denied to us so that Trump can reassure his racist base that he didn’t really mean it when he condemned white supremacists.

trump has not been saying that nazis, klansmen, and white nationalists are equivalent to the people opposing them

pay attention to what he’s saying:

in his comments of tuesday last week, he emphasized violence by anti-racist activists

in his re-election campaign rally he had harsh words for antifa and complained that he’d already condemned the nazis and the klan and the white nationalists

for days he has given his total support for the ostensible reason nazis, klansmen, and white supremacists laid siege to charlottesville (where at least some remain with no police action taken aside from arresting james fields)

he’s been saying the nazis, the klansmen, the white supremacists are better than the people opposing them

with his pardon of joe arpaio he has shown his utter contempt for law and his enthusiastic support of racist violence

this is very, very bad

The rules of the tent city were strict, arbitrary and brutally enforced. There are no newspapers allowed; Arpaio hated newspapers. The only food allowed for those of us in the work furlough program was the food in the vending machines, which was grossly overpriced.

During the sweltering summer, the temperature could reach 115 or 120 degrees. I was in the tents when we hit 120. It was impossible to stay cool in the oppressive heat. Everyone would strip down to their underwear. There was no cold water, only water from vending machines; and eventually, the machines would run out. People would faint; some had heatstroke. That summer, ambulances came about three times. One man died in his bed.

But the winter was even worse. During the winter, there were no heaters. Most jackets and heavily insulated pants weren’t allowed; they don’t want you to be comfortable.

When people say not to politicize a tragedy, they’re actually saying “I’m fully aware that the policies I support have caused this and I hope no one notices.”

This is a major step towards fascism. A step towards ending our democracy. This turns police into a hostile occupation force that alienates the community. Sadly this will go largely unnoticed and likely not protested by most. This will have devastating long term effects for marginilazed groups like POC. Remember that Obama instituted this ban after the heavy handed police response in Ferguson.

If I ever don't reblog this, assume I'm dead

pining is 100000% the most important aspect of pre-relationship fic for me. good-natured whole-hearted pining filled with lovelorn gazing and chest aching and fluttering touches, that’s my top priority. i was put on this earth to watch characters suffer over the profundity of their love for another person. unrequited love is why god made me. characters finding out that their feelings are reciprocated after long months/years of suffering is why the universe was assembled from nothingness. amen.

Anti-abortion laws are a product of blatant misogyny.

Anti-abortion laws not only hurt women, but trans men, nonbinary people, and other people who can get pregnant but don’t identify as women.

These are not contradictory statements. Abortion is a women’s issue but it is not just a women’s issue.

Failing to realize this and your ignorant refusal to include all people who can get pregnant in the conversation helps no one.

Consider:

Instead of using that creepy ass quote Professor Sneep says about his obsession with his dead ex-friend as The Harry Potter Quote why don’t we use the one James Potter says to his son, whom he gave his life for, to comfort him as he walks to his death

“‘You’ll stay with me?’ ‘Until the very end,’ said James.”

Just a thought

I mean we can forgive James for being a huge bully and torturing Snape throughout his years at Hogwarts bc he was a good dad but we can’t forgive Snape for his mistakes even though he saved Harry’s life on multiple occasions and tried to save both Lily and James’ life. Hmm. Okay.

So we can forgive a 15 year old for being an ass and having a mutual rivalry with a fellow student but we can’t forgive someone for joining a genocidal terrorist group and then bullying literal children placed in his care for years?? Absolutely.
