Me at 20: … And thats why Zuko and Katara should have ended up with each other. They perfectly reflected the shows themes of Yin and Yang. Foils yet parallels: Fire and Water. Sun and Moon. Opposite sibling dynamics. Respective royalty of their homelands. Complex relationships regarding their absent mothers. Taking on parental roles in the gaang. They were literally paired together for the final battle of the show because they were complimentary equals. It could have been the perfect execution of the enemies to friends to lovers trope. “Yes, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression - the dark side of the Force, are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.”

Endings are tricky because we expect answers. Fifteen years ago, with my first film Saving Face, I got one recurring question: “Is this ending… too happy?” At the time, as much as I saw the truth in it for my characters, I confessed to not knowing if that happy ending could be expected in real life; but as a queer woman, I wanted - needed - to see it in order to believe it could happen for me. Now with The Half Of It I’m regularly peppered with questions over whether certain characters end up together in an ever-pointed crescendo toward “But is the ending happy?” (Ha!) My honest answer is that the point of the film isn’t about who ends up with whom. It’s about three people who collide in a moment-in-time before going their separate ways, each now holding the piece of themselves that allows them to become the person they are meant to be. The end of the film is each of their beginnings. And for my characters, I can think of no happier ending. - Alice Wu

Sir, look, I really want to help, I do. But if my aunt finds out I left my class trip, she’s going to kill me. And if I’m seen like this in Europe, after the Washington Monument, my whole class will figure out who I am, and then the whole world will figure out who I am. And then, I’m done.
