It's a B-Movie Show

@lovezdarestevez4ever

Nerding out over B-Movies and anything else I like.

Reminder that:

"I'm glad I'm autistic and I wouldn't want to change that about myself and I love being passionate and different and seeing the world my way"

And

"my autism makes life fucking hard and fucking sucks rancid ass sometimes"

Are two things that can and do coexist

I love being passionate and excited and many other things about being autistic

I hate the sensory issues and would love for social interaction to not be excruciating as well

Both are true and that's sometimes hard to accept but it's okay be pissed off at your autism

Here's something that bothers me:

Parents in the 80's-90's thought horror films, rap/heavy metal music, and violent video games were "corrupting" us. They thought we were going to become "Satanists", or turn into serial killers.

Nothing happened. We turned out no worse than our parents.

Now, parents are claiming that rainbows on shirts, Sesame Street, and Disney are "corrupting" kids.

If Freddy Krueger didn't affect kids, why the hell do they think Elmo will?

Because there's a big difference between target audiences and intent for both groups of media. The former group, while it had social commentary, its main purpose was to entertain older teenagers and adults. It was never meant for young kids to engage with (even though they did it anyway) or teach them anything. Disney movies are sort of in the middle, in that they're family media that often teach lessons, but is also more explicitly to entertain.

Now Sesame Street is a different beast as it is generally aimed at young kids and does seek to educate them in various ways. This has generally been very helpful for many generations as the show is trusted to teach kids not only in basic academics, but social interactions as well with an emphasis on acceptance and inclusion of others. Now most of the time this has had a very positive effect, but that's not to say that it couldn't go bad in the hands of people who might choose to push an agenda.

Freddy Krueger never tried to teach anything other than special effects and bad puns are fun, Elmo could very well end up preaching bad societal ideals in the hands and voice of zealous puppeteers consumed by their causes looking to draw in vulnerable children to think how they wish them to think, regardless of if their mindsets are healthy in the first place. I'm not saying this has happened, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

why is there bluey discourse in the newspaper

I was too busy trying to figure out what a larrakin is. Google tells me it's a "boisterous, often badly behaved young man". Which to be fair, Bandit is boisterous, especially when playing with the kids. Badly behaved? Not really unless you want to count drawing other people into his family's shenanigans.

But yeah, this should've been a Tumblr post, not an opinion piece. Which in the age of social media when anyone can have have a blog, get Reddit or Twitter threads started or have discussions on Discord forum style, do opinion pieces really need to be in newspapers anymore? I feel like that's a much more interesting discourse about whether or not they're still relevant.

lol it didn’t even occur to me that non australians wouldn’t know what larrikin is!! i think the google definition is right but also doesn’t quite capture how it’s mostly used in australia. a larrikin might be a bit badly behaved but they’re also usually well liked and thought of as generally a good guy. as for whether it should be in the newspaper, idk its a bit silly but it’s just a local paper, they sometimes do little pieces like this on low stakes topics haha

Yeah, it’s always nice to learn new words and thanks for the extra context. :)

I think all or at least many newspapers do that kind of thing. I was more musing in general as to whether that kind of article might end up fazed out at some point or if people continue to enjoy seeing it in physical print.

ah okay, got ya. i guess we’ll see in the coming years!!

Does anyone have an update on where things are at with the writers strike? It's disappeared from my various feeds and algorithms.

The writers' strike is ongoing and the studios are still not returning to the negotiating table. Unfortunately a lot of the coverage has tapered off because we're on 50+ days of striking and it's not new anymore. The last strike in 2007 lasted 100 days, so don't be surprised if this strike lasts as long, or even longer.

The biggest recent news is that the Directors' Guild of America (DGA) voted to ratify their new agreement with the studios (article from June 23), and it appears likely that the actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) will also take a deal instead of striking (article from June 24). Although this is disappointing news, it's completely expected. During previous strikes, the WGA held its own without other unions going on strike. Which is to say—don't be disheartened by the news that there won't be a triple strike. The WGA is strong enough!

Please keep vocally supporting the WGA online to keep the pressure on the studios & to keep WGA members motivated and encouraged! There are many ongoing donation drives, such as the Star Trek fan snack squad (Twitter account required to DM the organizer) and the Our Flag Means Death snack squad (opens the PayPal fundraising page—no Twitter required). There's a longer list of ongoing donation drives here.

The Entertainment Community Fund is also always accepting donations to support entertainment workers affected by the strike. Please boost and encourage your friends to keep supporting the strike. Hashtag #IStandWithTheWGA #DoTheWriteThing to boost the cause!
