Personally, I'm ace and started listening because I'm desperate for representation, despite not liking horror, and mostly I was wondering if that was a common experience in the fandom. We talk a lot about parasocial relationships and idol worship now in relation to podcasters and voice actors but I think another important part is to remember that these people... aren’t really celebrites? They may seem like it because podcast fans have very often saturated themselves amongst groups who all know who these people are and admire them, but 99% of podcasters aren’t ‘get recognised on the street, earns lots of money from this’ famous. Almost all of them still have day jobs, and hell, a lot of them are still active in fan spaces , because they’re usually just people who you’ve chosen to listen to talk into a mic, and have decided are Public Property instead of people.

And that means that when people treat them the way they would a celebrity who’s fame has put them above everyone else, it can seem kind of weird? Because there’s a good chance they’ll see or just be generally aware of how people treat them online? (And I don’t think the answer to this is ‘be creepy about them in private’ because you’re still... being creepy about another human being. It’s not about whether they do see it or not. It’s about whether if they were to know about it, they’d be uncomfortable)

While I personally think all RPF is creepy, (excluding exceptions like the Achievement Hunter crew who encourages fanfic but have set boundaries (eg some of them don’t want their wives or children to be written about)) it’s an entire other level when I’ve literally seen people write RPF about voice actors who even have their own Ao3 accounts, and that just seems so invasive to their personal lives? I’ve seen people on tumblr name their podcast sideblogs with voice actors full actual names, not the character, the person themslves, and it’s often VA’s who have their own tumblr accounts.

Podcasters very often create content for free from their homes. I do it too! So to see them get treated more like concepts than real people is a little disconcerting? ‘Learn Boundaries’ is a very common thing to say in relation to people’s interactions with creators but also just. Take time to think about your actions towards them? If the person you’re talking about found the content you’re making about them, would they find it creepy/invasive? If so... maybe just don’t?

Taako in canon has said he doesn't like being objectified and Wants to be taken seriously but since y'all love fetishizing gay men I only ever see him portrayed as this hyper feminine flaming homosexual who loves sex. I'm so glad u made this post cause I was thinking of making one myself honestly after they had him on the show this week, ESPECIALLY as the protestors fight to remove icons glorifying slave owners all over the country it's like how tone deaf can u be?

if you need a concrete example of the cr cast not being receptive to criticism and being actively shielded from said criticism by the same fans who claim to be a welcoming, open, loving, “progressive” community, there’s the time I very politely tweeted at matt mercer explaining why his use of the word “golem” was antisemitic, the history behind it, and how I hoped he would take this opportunity to make the show better, and his response boiled down to “actually, it’s not antisemitic. we love everybody :)”

I had people on twitter yelling at me and defending him for weeks, despite the fact that he’s an adult man who can clearly speak for himself. he then replied to someone else saying that he can’t expect to “have a conversation” with “someone who calls [him] a fuckwad on tumblr.” (this tweet is burned into my memory but I don’t have the spoons to scroll back three years in matt’s twitter to find it. also, for what it’s worth, there’s no way he could have found my tumblr from my twitter account (my tumblr links to my twitter but NOT the other way around), which means that somebody would have had to directly send him the post in which I’d called him a fuckwad, as a way to invalidate my entire argument, because other fans were so upset that I had the audacity to have a problem with something critical role did).

he and the rest of the cast then continued to misuse golems in this way for the next two years. they probably still do, but that was the point that I stopped watching. how can you claim to have a “progressive” show that listens to the concerns of its fanbase when a jewish fan says to you, “hey, this thing that you’re doing hurts jewish people, and here’s how you can fix it,” and your response is to say that said fan is wrong about what’s hurtful to jewish people?
