Hans Week 2020 Day 3: It’s What Brothers Do

Summary: As the years go by, Ludwig’s haunting words change how Hans feels about his brothers. @hansweek

“Very good, Hans!” Fourteen-year-old Ludwig beamed to his youngest brother. Three-year-old Hans was sitting on his lap in the deepest, coziest corner of the castle library. “You read this very well!”

“Really, Lu’wi?” The little prince asked with large, green eyes.

“Absolutely.” The older Westergaard smiled and closed the storybook in his hands. “I don’t understand why Mrs. Beker claims you’re so far behind in your development.”

The innocent smile faded from Hans’ face and he slid off his brother’s lap. His wooden toy horse that he carried everywhere was sitting on the floor beside the chair, and he picked it up and hugged it to his chest. His voice was quiet and full of sadness, “Mrs. Beker is mean. She likes Dirk ‘n Derrick more. They are smarter. Not me—”

“Oh Hans…” Ludwig knelt before his youngest sibling and placed gentle, comforting hands on his smaller shoulders. “Never feel like you have to compare yourselves to them. To anyone. We are all unique in our own ways, and we learn at different speeds.”

“But…” Hans rubbed his eyes, “she won’t help me…”

Ludwig tilted his head to the side and angled Hans’ face up, “If she is treating you unfairly, then come to me. I will help you.”

The green orbs grew wide once more, “Really?”

“Absolutely,” Ludwig smiled reassuringly, and then pulled Hans in for a tight hug, “Always remember that we are brothers, Hans. And helping each other… well, it’s what brothers do….”
