Nobody talks about the Shibboleth of Feanor enough.

That is, nobody talks about the Shibboleth of Feanor enough correctly.

  Feanor did not decide to pronounce things weird, what he observed was that over the millennia, language gradually changed, and he Did Not Like That.  Feanor decided that the language Shouldn’t Ever Change for various reasons, including being the fun police, and being emo about his dead mom, but explicitly, one reason that Feanor wanted everyone to try to speak as close as they could to the same way they did when the first elves awoke is so that there wouldn’t be a language barrier if they ever met the Sindar again.

Now, if we assume that most of the Exiles were around Feanor’s age or younger, and if we assume that Feanor froze his version of Quenya at the point that Miriel died, then we can further assume that everyone who spoke mainstream Quenya did so natively from childhood, learning to speak the language with several of the sound changes that Feanor objected to.

Meanwhile, the younger generations of Feanor’s faction will have grown up speaking the old-fashioned, Feanor approved version of Quenya.

We know, specifically, that one sound change that Feanor personally cared about was the s/th merger, because the th appeared in his mother’s name, Miriel s/therinde.  Th is a weird sound, it’s hard to pronounce and is rare across world languages, so it makes sense that Quenya would do away with it.   However, Sindarin kept the th.  And while Feanor’s Quenya wasn’t the same as Sindarin, both because Feanor froze it at an arbitrary point, and because Sindarin changed probably as much as Quenya did, it stands to reason that it would be closer than the standard version.

Which is all to say, that given the ban and general politics in Beleriand, I find it deeply ironic and hilarious that the Feanorians are the ones who naturally find it easiest to learn Sindarin and have the best Sindarin accents.

Or, TLDR, the sons of Feanor are the only Noldorin leaders who can pronounce “Thingol” correctly, and everyone Hates That.

i think it is time to consider like. from thor’s perspective. the possibility that he is TOO forgiving, that he forgives things that (from what he can actually see) he probably shouldn’t, and that this is harmful to him.

like, yes, we as an audience can see that thor has wronged loki too, but thor can’t see that. he has no idea how bad it is, so he doesn’t see where loki’s coming from and YET he is ready to forgive him for attempted murder! even for actual murders! he partly justifies it by telling himself loki has “lost his mind”, but also… idk. i think he’s a little desperate, honestly.

(and okay i was gonna lead into the odin thing right away but that desperation is an interesting idea. i’ve always taken it for granted that thor feels pretty securely loved in general, that he’s not lonely, but… is he? is there any way he depends on loki? he certainly can’t rely on their parents either. something to think about.)

anyway back to odin: thor is ALSO far too forgiving of odin in my opinion. at the end of thor 2011, not only does he accept that his father banished him “for a reason”, but he says something like: “there will never be a better father than you.” and uhhh. WHAT?

it’s easy to be alarmed by the mistreatment of loki he’s ignoring, but he is ALSO ignoring mistreatment of himself. yes, of course it was wrong for him to start that war, but… he was BANISHED. indefinitely, as if never to return. he was stripped of his power, so he could’ve easily died, and if odin hadn’t changed his mind within a decade or so (which is not that long in asgardian time) then thor would’ve started aging, possibly irreversibly, possibly robbing him of centuries of his life even if he were taken back. that is still an out-of-proportion, inappropriate punishment from a father who expects them to reunite and be family again one day. and that is still a TERRIBLE way to TEACH.

loki is not the only one who is kept in line with cruelty, humiliation and powerlessness in this family. thor is too. he might even experience it *more directly* from odin, since he’s the one who’s being prepared for the throne. and while loki rebels, thor never defies odin for his own sake. he only does it to try and protect the kingdom.

loki even comments on the cruelty when he pretends odin has died, and sure he’s lying right then, and sure he’s also talking about his own experience, but… it doesn’t sound exactly unfamiliar for him to say odin is being cruel. it sounds like an old sentiment, an attempt at solidarity even, perhaps one that has been brushed off before because thor can’t accept it… perhaps that’s where the bitter satisfaction in saying it comes from. “what did i fucking tell you, thor? you may be his favourite but he’s no kinder to you than to me.” (loki also lacks self-awareness at this point, but, you know. he’s in turmoil while thor is in profound denial.)

so. thor is unhealthily forgiving. thor has been trained not to see or understand why loki is rebelling, but nevertheless to forgive him for anything he does as long as he relents in the end / the hierarchy can still be re-established… oh this is so fucked up for everyone involved

I’ve been telling everyone I know for YEARS not to buy Blue Buffalo.

This is the short story:

A few years ago I took my sick cat, Ankh, to the vet. The vet and vet tech asked what I fed her. I told them Blue Buffalo. They looked like I had just told them I fed her razor blades and cyanide. They diagnosed her with pancreatitis and said that nearly all of the cats they’d been seeing lately with pancreatitis were being fed Blue Buffalo.  They gave her medicine and sent her home.  Two days later she had a seizure and died right in my arms. 

The day after she died Hannibal started displaying the same symptoms she had so I panicked hard and took him to the vet.  Got the same meds and the same diagnosis.  Luckily Hannibal survived.

I wish Ankh had survived. She was only ten and the best cat I’ve ever had. Literally the best and five years later I still cry when I think about her.

FUCK BLUE BUFFALO.

I don’t know the full story behind the tweets above, but a Google search shows there HAVE been several recalls regarding this brand, especially in 2016. I would absolutely avoid as it is not worth the risk.

Good god thank you so much for sharing this because I’ve lately been considering switching to this brand cus it’s supposed to be so much better than all the others but good god what the hell.

I worked in a vet for a little while and I shit you not, when a dog came in with constant diarrhea they were always eating Blue Buffalo. We changed the food and the dog got better every time. Blue Buffalo is garbage food and never feed it to your pets.

I’ve never heard of this brand but I love my dog with all of my heart and I’d be broken if I ever accidently fed her this and got her sick (people give me different dog food to try all the time). I’d hate for anyone else to lose their pet also.

I used to have a greyhound named Ranger who was pretty much healthy except that he had a sensitive stomach. He was the sweetest boy, and I never got mad at him when he threw up oh pooed in the house because I knew it wasn’t his fault. We had been feeding him Blue Buffalo but after a while we decided to try a new brand to change up the flavor a bit. HE FINALLY STARTED DOING HIS BUSINESS OUTSIDE 99% OF THE TIME. WE HAD ALWAYS THOUGHT HE JUST DIDN’T REACT VERY WELL TO THIS BRAND BUT NOW I UNDERSTAND THAT WAS NEVER THE CASE!!!!

You think we looked like heirs to the throne of anywhere? We were thirteen wolverines in ripstop.

My boy Boromir? Spent FOUR MONTHS in the wilderness! Alone! No roads! High floods! His horse died! I’m amazed he showed up to Imladris wearing clothes, let alone with a decent haircut. I’m fully convinced that he left Gondor looking like Richard Sharpe being presented to the Prince Regent in 1813

One thing I feel people miss about lord of the rings is that it’s sort of……….post-apocalyptic?

Like– the world already ended, a long time ago, and the characters are surrounded by the ruins of dead countries. They spend most of their time journeying through places that are either abandoned (Moria) soon to be abandoned (Rivendell/Lorien) or half-destroyed and falling into decay (Rohan/Gondor.) The villains are creatures that Used to be Human; I feel like Lotr’s orcs/ringwraiths have more in common with zombies than they do with DnD-style orcs, because they’re a state that “normal” people enter when they’re corrupted by a supernatural force.

Even the Shire is surrounded by ruins– the ruins of watchtowers, the ruins of the old Northern Kingdom, the ruined city near the Grey Havens. The people around there have an idiom “when the king comes back” that means the same thing as an idiom like “when pigs fly”–  “when a completely ridiculous improbable thing happens.” They’re so used to the disintegrated state of the world that the idea of a central government is fairy-tale-like and bizarre. They have their little mayors and thains; they don’t need anything else.

So yeah! I see people try to “modern-real-world- au” versions of Hobbiton by making it “a peaceful suburb” but to me, a modern au version of Hobbiton would be more like…….

I think what makes me so mad about how Valkyrie was written in Love and Thunder is just the proof of how WOC and black women specifically have repeatedly been treated in the MCU when their writing isn’t handled by black creators.

Removing all discussion of how Valkyrie was set up to be the romantic interest from Ragnarok, she was also set up to be the secondary main protagonist. She was going to take an even bigger spotlight and grow and develop as her own character. But she was robbed of that so a white woman could have that characterization instead. Now Valkyrie is nothing more than “the sassy bff who quips and fights and nothing else”

And that’s how it’s been. Black women in marvel do not get to be the lead. Monica was already shafted as Captain Marvel in favor of Carol Danvers. Monica was also physically attacked multiple times for no reason and treated like a ragdoll by Wanda and then STILL coddles Wanda bc she’s sad. She was even dubbed “the sassy best friend” by another white character in that show. Even Maria Rambeau is treated as a stereotype to coddle Carol.

Every black woman in the Loki show was treated SO DIRTY. Either they’re brainwashed/tortured by Sylvie, characterized as a heartless villain, or they sacrifice themselves for Loki’s cause. Karli Morgenthau in TFATWS was literally a character who was RIGHT!!!!! She was totally right in her motivations and cause! And yet she was villainized and killed by a white woman for her own personal gain. Even the Dora Milaje were treated almost as a coldhearted antagonistic force in TFATWS.

Black women are also repeatedly treated as objects of flirtation without ever developing it into an actual romance or a lasting happy ending. It’s almost an inside joke at this point. “The white male lead will show interest/flirt with the black woman, but that’s NEVER going anywhere haha” it’s so tiring. Why was Bucky’s storyline with Sarah Wilson cut from the show?? Why was the setup between Thor and Valkyrie cut off? Why didn’t MJ get to have a happy ending with Peter? What’s the point of bringing up Valkyrie’s love life in Thor 4 if she ends up alone and playing hype man to the white woman? You can only have a romance if you’re painted a primary color like Gamora, and even then you will be killed and revived and separated from your love interest.

I’m so sad you guys and it’s so upsetting that no one cares about how black women are treated in media.
