I don’t know what kind of fic you’re most interested in, so I’ll link a few of my faves here with a small summary and tags and you can decide which one you want to read. All of them are highly recommended, have read them (I’ve read many of them more than once).

Chaptered fics:

Turn by Saras_girl; W: 306708, E, M/M, AU, Epilogue compliant

-> Turn is one of the first chaptered fics I’ve read for this fandom and was an instant favourite of mine. I always talk about importance of fiction and how it can affect you so much. You sometimes search for specific fics but then a fic finds you.. at the right time and it just stays with you. That’s Turn for me and a lot of other people. It deals with Harry later in life, being unhappy with his life but can’t pinpoint why. He questions some of his decision he did/didn’t make and how life could have been. This prompts a journey of self-discovery and righting some wrongs..of sorts and being true to yourself even if people think it’s a mid-life crisis.

Grounds for divorce by @tepre; W: 122217, E, M/M, EWE, Accidental bonding!

-> I cannot stop talking about this fic. Another one of those “right fic at the right time” situation. Be prepared to feel all the feelings, because these boys are sometimes so stupid and blind that they end up hurting each other before they learn how to love each other the way they need. It deals with a lot, a kick-start is them accidentally bonding and from then they have to find a way to live their life. They learn a lot about themselves, each other, their families. It is a beautiful piece of writing that made me cry, laugh, feel anguished, ecstatic and joyful. It is a MUST READ for sure.

-> Magical theory, what ifs? I mean, this is a brilliant combination of both, mixed with Harry discovering himself still. I stayed up all night to read it because I just couldn’t leave it like that. I love this so much, I’ll be re-reading this again for sure!

Changing Tides by @carpemermaidtales; W: 109,687, E, M/M, Pirate AU

-> THIS FIC… I mean. Honestly. I found this fic through tumblr, saw the fanart and the fic was linked down below. I’m so glad I clicked on it. I love it so much, you can’t imagine. Draco accidentally finds himself entangled with pirates and his life changes. He finds himself in the most unlikely place in the most unlikely situation. The whole journey is amazing, filled with laughter, tears and wholesomeness.

This Year’s Love by trishjames; W: 84000, E, M/M, EWE

-> This fanfic is a journey. Harry goes through so much and learns things about himself because a situation forces him to. He is a dick at times and sometimes doesn’t realise how he can hurt the people he loves. But he comes around and beautiful things happen thanks to that. Read this, you won’t be disappointed.

That Old Black Magic by @bixgirl1; W: 77777, E, M/M, EWE, Arranged marriage

-> Ugh, this killed me. Nothing better than Draco and Harry having to accept things about the other one and working through their issues, finding each other in the most unlikely situations.

-> One of the Drarry fandom classics. A lot of magical theory, alchemy, our favourite boys, eight year. I’ve read it a long long time ago, so my memory can be fuzy but I know its amazing and worth the read!

Small Blessings by oldenuf2nb; W: 37020, M, M/M

-> Another fic that I’ve read a while ago, maybe 10 years ago but I remember I loved it. Harry creates a family for himself, finds a friend in Pansy Parkinson and life connects him to Draco in an unforeseen way. Contains a lot of fluff, be prepared. Lots of kids!

Temptation on the Warfront by alizarincrims0n; W: 180305, E, M/M, Deathly Hallows AU

-> This fic… I mean I love peoples individual take on what could have been, partially because Deathly Hallows could have been done so differently. This is it. Ever wondered what could have happened if Draco stood in the other side of the war? Read this, you’ll find out. Draco’s transformation is amazing, it is not instantaneous, he’s not automatically on board with Harry and for the same reason. He finds his place on the side of the Light through struggle and not always of his own volition, but he changes. Beautiful story.

One-shots:

Then Comes Mist and a Weeping Rain by faithwood; W: 21139, E, M/M, EWE, Post-War

-> It always rains for Draco Malfoy. Metaphorically. And literally. Ever since he had accidentally Conjured a cloud. A cloud that’s ever so cross. The summary is spot on, as they usually are. Draco walks around with a cloud above his had, an accident that leads to unexpected things.

The Four Ds of Apparition by @eidheann and @firethesound; W: 36638, E, M/M, EWE

-> Non-stop laughter. I mean, this fic had me hooked from the start. The mood of the fic is just so amaing, you have to read it. It contains one of my favourite things on earth, a healer!Draco Malfoy along with his witty nature and love for teasing Harry.

Moon-Eyed by @l0vegl0wsinthedark; W: 29699, E, M/M, EWE, Creature fic

-> Anon, do yourself a favour and read this. As stated above, the fic is explicit and is basically Veela!Draco and Werewolf!Harry. Not sure if this is your cup of tea but their relationship is so beautifully written. Draco is a beautiful smart badass and Harry is in a permanent need of a hug.

-> Contains my favourite trope: Harry James Potter is a dumdum and forever finds himself in weird situations because he makes everything his business. Although, this was not just his fault…it’s those damn neighbours.

Anon, I hope you find something you’ll  enjoy reading. Do not fear longer fics, it’s the rite of passage in this fandom, for this  pairing. We love a good long fic. I’ll definitely do another rec list, because I’ve been a fan for so long, but I have to log into my old accounts, did so for this one as well.

But because I have an insatiable need to read every highly-recommended Drarry fic, I have inevitably read a few really good angsty ones! Just keep in mind that my threshold for angst is not very high, and these will all have a happy ending ;)In Pieces by Cheryl Dyson (85K)- Harry returns to Hogwarts as the new DADA instructor, only to find his teaching efforts thwarted by a very familiar ghost.This fic is absolutely amazing and filled with lots of fluff but also inevitably tons of angst because Draco is a ghost??? They can’t even touch??? *cries* I remember feeling like there was no way it could possibly work out happily and believably but I was VERY pleasantly surprised!

To Those Who Wait by loveglowsinthedark (8.5K)- Harry’s come is trickling out of my arse as I say ‘I do’ and promise to love and cherish Blaise in sickness and in health.The love of my life is preparing to leave the country as I smile for photographs.The excruciating agony of my heart shattering nearly brings me to my knees on what ought to have been the happiest day of my life.This fic is fucking FABULOUS if you want angst with a happy ending. And I’m not just saying that because @l0vegl0wsinthedark​ is my main bitch. Harry and Draco are basically soul mates they are so made for each other, but absurdly tragic circumstances have split them up (for now). I bet reading the summary alone has already made your heart ache and now the only way to soothe it is to go read the rest ASAP, so DO IT. Another Mask Behind You by lettered (116.5K)- Draco is a high-end prostitute who hides his identity. Harry unknowingly hires him. And then there is porn, questions about identity, domestic bliss, more porn, and truth as seen through a web of lies. (And then more porn. Seriously, if you don’t want sex scene after sex scene you probably shouldn’t read this. And please read the warnings.)This has a lot of things you should check the warnings for, but among them is ANGST LIKE WOAH. A mistaken(hidden?) identity fic and yeah I would be angsty too if I found out I had been unknowingly fucking and falling in love with my schoolboy rival! It’s soooo well-written and probably the angstiest fic I have ever LOVED. So much else (aka mostly hot hot sex!) more than made up for the stress it caused me! Another angsty and amazing fic that you should definitely read by lettered is The Boy Who Only Lived Twice, which also contains mistaken identity of a sort!

Written on the Heart by who_la_hoop (114K)- Harry doesn’t mind that so many Slytherins from his year have returned to finish their NEWTs, really he doesn’t. It’s just – do they have to be so friendly? He’s not prejudiced, really he’s not. It’s just – they’ve got to be up to something, right? Unnerved by the attention he’s attracting from everyone – the Slytherins are the least of it, to be fair – and struggling with a raft of changes to Hogwarts itself, Harry wishes he could be happy that one constant remains: Draco Malfoy really fucking hates him.When he’s hit by an illegal love-spell though, Harry finds he has more to worry about than whether or not Blaise Zabini actually wants to be his friend. In His Nature by create_serenity (20.5K)- Harry agreed to have sex with Draco once a month in order to keep him alive, what he didn’t agree to was Draco popping up all over the place and disrupting his life in more ways than one.Veela!Draco fic in which he needs sex with his mate to keep him alive. At first Harry thinks he’s doing Malfoy a huge favor, but soon he realizes how much pain he’s causing Draco by limiting their interactions and works on fixing that :).

Something Always (Brings Me Back to You) by Kedavranox (10K)- The Centre for Magical Theory and Complex Spell Classifications keeps fucking with Harry’s dig sites, and he’s pretty sure Malfoy has ulterior motives.This is a getting-back-together fic… but of course it can’t happen without several misunderstandings and life-threatening situations! Yep, yep. Definitely plenty of angst here.

Also I really can’t choose a specific one (there are so many!!) but most of the longer works by Lomonaaeren have a healthy dose of angst! She has a very unique style, but if you like it (I do!!) then her literal hundreds of fics are a goldmine!

Thank you so much for this question, though it’s easier to answer in theory than in practice. I’ve read and enjoyed so much fic in the 5 years since I started reading Draco/Harry that narrowing it down is almost impossible. I actually attempted to do so about 3.5 years ago in May 2014 with my Top 25 Favorite H/D Fics, and I’ve actually been thinking about updating that list for awhile now, and your ask has given me the perfect opportunity to do so!

Obviously I still love and adore all of the fics on my original list (and some of them will make a reappearance on this one) but there has been a ton of great fic written since I came up with my original 25, and I’ve also read a lot of older fic in that time as well that resonated, so the list was in need of a bit of a refresh. Honestly, I love every fic that I rec, but these are some of my absolute favorites, the ones I read again and again, the ones that remind me why I love this pairing so much.

A Gift for Draco by @norelationtoatticus  33k - E

Though their new relationship is going well, both Harry and Draco have trouble communicating and are holding back from taking things to the next level–both emotionally and sexually. When Harry decides he is ready for more, he stumbles over how to start the conversation, but figures out a plan with the help of his friends. He comes up with the perfect Valentine’s Day gift to show Draco trust, commitment, and desire: sexy pictures of his naked arse. Thankfully, Pansy Parkinson has a camera and is willing to help…

Eighth year, Harry and Draco are together but Harry asked to take things slow and doesn’t know how to reopen the conversation. No side pairings, but lots of awesome friendship moments with side characters, including most notably Pansy taking sexy photos of Harry so he can give them to Draco for Valentine’s Day. It’s not a traditional slow burn because they’re together the whole time, but the slow build throughout the fic is really fantastic. Also did I mention Pansy taking sexy photos of Harry so he can give them to Draco??

It’s Been Draco For A While by @oceaxereturns - 15.5k - E

What harm can a love potion do if you’re already in love?

In which Harry finds out that it’s not a love potion but it can do quite a lot of harm, and Draco finds out how fiendishly difficult it is to fend off his flatmate’s advances when all he wants is to give in to them.

I love me some good pining, and this story takes pining to new levels. Seriously. It’s written in a combination of 2nd person and epistolary but even if that isn’t your thing I would highly recommend you give this a try. There’s a forced proximity aspect in that they live together, so Harry can’t get away when the love potion starts affecting his behavior around Draco. It’s not a traditional slow burn but it gave me some slow burn feelings for sure. Again: new levels of pining, holy shit.

Mixed Drinks and Crossed Wires by @korlaena - 16.5k - E

Draco is a handsy drunk. Harry is okay with it, really. They’re friends, so it doesn’t mean anything.

A post-war fic in which the Gryffindors and the Slytherins have all become friends and go out together regularly…and Draco gets drunk and flirts with Harry…and Harry assumes it doesn’t mean anything. I don’t think it’s a spoiler for me to tell you that this is a getting together story. It also has side Ginny/Pansy and really awesome communication.

Orbit by @henrymercury - 52.5k - E

“The classical problem of celestial mechanics, perhaps of all Newtonian mechanics, involves the motion of one body about another under the influence of their mutual gravitation.”

They don’t like each other. They’re not friends. There’s not even a ceasefire of any sort because they’re fighting as much as ever—but there’s definitely something different about it. An added layer of self-awareness they don’t dare identify, but which colours every Scared, Potter? and Do your worst; each You wouldn’t dare and Then prove it.

This is a long one, but it’s so good. It’s got side Luna/Pansy as well as a ton of other really well written side characters. It’s an eighth year story in which McGonagall puts a spell on Hogwarts that prevents anyone from doing anything (sex, fighting, etc.) with someone else without the other person’s consent. Unsurprisingly, the students have things to say about that, and this story handles all of that really well. It also features Harry and Draco being stuck in detention together every week after they get into a brawl during Herbology, and then slowly getting to know each other and acknowledging their feelings. This one ticks a lot of your boxes and I’d really recommend checking it out!

In which Draco studies with Gryffindors, learns a new spell, and navigates the difficulty of being in a not-so-casual secret relationship with his childhood nemesis.

Eighth year fic with a side of secret dating - Harry and Draco navigating their new (sexual) relationship while also keeping their relationship under wraps, and how that affects them both. No rare pairs, but some awesome Pansy and Draco friendship moments.

Say The Words (Say Them Out Loud) by @goldentruth813 - 18.5k - E

When Draco gets assigned as the Auror to guard Harry Potter day and night, he is sure nothing good will come of it. But as the days go on Draco is forced to evaluate himself and things he thought to be true about Potter and relationships. Sometimes it’s not love at first sight. Sometimes, first, it’s miscommunication and misunderstanding. A story in which Harry and Draco learn to accept the things they want from themselves and from each other.

You say you like forced proximity? Such as, for example, Draco having to live in Harry’s house while he works as his bodyguard? As they dance around the possibility of being mutually interested and also learn to trust each other? Another one that, while not a typical slow burn, has some of that feeling for me because of the pining. I also love the Auror Draco with non-Auror Harry dynamic.

Unexpected Consequences by Lauren3210 (39K)- Harry was going back to school. As an alternative to Azkaban, Draco is allowed to attend Hogwarts provided he agrees to a bond with Harry that makes him to do whatever Harry says. Naturally, once the feelings start this causes a lot of worrying and angst and klsfhd it’s just really really good! Also did I mention they share a private room? I know I can’t be the only one who lives for that.

Right Hand Red by lumosed_quill (73K)- Harry felt Malfoy’s breath on his lips as they came together over the bottle, hands firmly planted on the floor as though they each needed their familiar soil, refusing to cross into enemy territory. Except that Malfoy no longer felt like his enemy. Malfoy felt inevitable.Another of the first ever fics I read (and reread!) and MAN IS IT FUCKING AMAZING. The lust starts right from the beginning and there are *lots* of party games and a secret relationship and sweet moments and teaching of patronus charms and *sigh* I just want to go read it again right now!

Lumos by birdsofshore (41.5K)- Harry never expected to spend eighth year listening to Draco Malfoy wanking.FABULOUS fic in which they are roommates and then Draco wanks and then Harry wanks and then Draco and Harry wank at the same time, and then there are feelings!! A thousand times yes.

Strange Bathfellows by Bixgirl1 (27.5K)- It started with a bath. Or a potions accident. Or maybe it started before that, but who can tell anymore.Featuring: Uncomfortable wanking, more comfortable wanking, mutual wanking, bath sharing, inappropriate betting, secret shagging, those secrets at Hogwarts that everyone knows, and oblivious Harry who knows one thing: he’s falling in love.Harry and Draco being forced to share a bath is everything I never knew I needed until I was blessed enough to find this fic. @bixgirl1 has MANY truly ✨FABULOUS✨ eighth year fics (for example Instruction for a Misplaced Slytherin (8.5K) in which Draco teaches Harry about sex and In Evidence of Magical Theory (43.5K), which features forced bonding) and you should definitely read them all, but Strange Bathfellows remains my favorite! :)

Hey there... So kinda a weird request, but I'm looking for some fics where Harry's abuse features prominently. I want some where he is actually affected by the 10 years of abuse he went through. It can be the main focus or just have a real emotional affect on him. (Claustrophobia, flinching if someone touches him abruptly - or similar stuff.) Thank you in advance

Hey @azuthlu​, not weird at all! One of the important, kind of unique things about this ship is exploring the characters’ histories, and for Harry that includes a history of abuse. This was a bit of a hard thing to pin down because there are many more fics that mention it in passing than fics that really address it, and it’s a hard thing to search for because it’s described in so many different ways.
