My SasuSaku Analysis
The Trash ‘Boruto’ Era
I had a few things pop into my head that would explain, for the most part, why SasuSaku is so bad in Boruto. Or, at least, why it appears that way. I think before I can get to the SS part, though, we have to look at a few other things and the main ships in Boruto.
Boruto isn’t made for long time Naruto fans, that much is clear. The original characters are written so poorly, it’s apparent that Ike knows little to nothing about them or, at the very least, how to properly write them. So much lore from the original is thrown out the window in Boruto like:
1. Sarada needing to wear glasses, even though she has the Sharingan. Uchiha are supposed to be able to “see everything” once they awaken the Sharingan, why does she still need glasses on when her Sharingan are activated ? They should correct her vision, making it hard to see with glasses still on. Obito stopped wearing goggles and needing eyedrops after awakening his.
2. Sarada awakening her Sharingan twice, once as a really young girl, maybe between 2-5 years old, making her sickly and screwing up her eyesight, and again at 11 or 12.
3. Boruto being able to do literally anything, like potentially learning Chidori, even though Kakashi wasn’t even able to keep using it because he lost his Sharingan. Minato told Kakashi to stop using it before he had Sharingan at all. You aren’t able to guide Chidori properly without Sharingan because of the increase in speed, in which case, it shouldn’t be possible for Boruto of all people to use it. That’s only one of many examples of Boruto being a literal God at age 12.
Lore gripes aside, as is, we don’t see much of the Naruto characters in Boruto and, in turn, their pairings. There are a few reasons why I figure we don’t:
1. To appeal to a younger demographic (Kids don’t like the mushy shit like we do and Ike damn sure isn’t appealing to us.)
2. To make the kids the main focus of the series
Main Ships in ‘Boruto’
Lastly, before I get to SS, I wanted to compare it with the other ships. Personally, I think NaruHina is written the worst, because it isn’t really written in at all until Hinata gets bodied by Pein, then not again until Neji dies, and the Last was made specifically to give NH some development. But, that’s a rant for another day. We see a small amount of NH in Boruto but, it’s shown the most out of them all in the anime. SaiIno has a small amount of development but, for the most part, is non-existent until the end of Shippuden. Though, somehow, it still manages to be better than NaruHina. We don’t really see it at all in Boruto, either. I think ShikaTema is written the best, right on par with MinaKushi to me. Simple, makes sense, has plenty of development. It’s shown slightly less than NH but, never in a romantic context, just shows Temari beating Shikamaru & Shikadai’s asses one way or another .. Another example of Ike not knowing how to write characters and screwing up a once good thing. I feel like literally anyone would have done a better job with this series than him.
SasuSaku
So on to SasuSaku. I don’t want to reiterate the SS development in Shipudden but, here’s a few bulletpoints that I considered that I know for a fact are canon:
1. Sasuke falling in love (or beginning to) with Sakura around the time he was considering leaving the village. When he said goodbye to her and left, he was left feeling guilty and heartbroken but, he wanted to take Itachi down on his own.
2. Sasuke wanted to drive Sakura away to keep from hurting her any more than he already had. He didn’t want her to keep loving him because he didn’t feel like he deserved being loved by anyone and he wanted her to be happy but, didn’t feel like he could be the one to make her happy. Unbeknownst to him, he was the only one who could make her happy.
3. Sasuke never had the intent of killing Sakura, he only ever acted in self-defense against her. He was never the aggressor, at least not with her. He did try to kill Naruto multiple times but, again, rant for another day.
SasuSaku in ‘Boruto’
So, by far, SS is shown the least in Boruto, except for maybe SaiIno. There are a few reasons for this, starting with Sakura and Sasuke being seperated most of the time, the reasons for that being:
1. Sasuke doesn’t like being in Konoha, for the most part, because of the horrific memories of the Uchiha Massacre. The Uchiha Compound still stands there, as well, I believe. It’s understandable that he’d want to be as far away from it as possible. This isn’t because of any distain towards his family (Sakura & Sarada) or not wanting to be around them. The only times he seems genuinely happy are when he is fighting alongside Naruto and when he’s with the girls. His love and concern for Sakura is apparent when he rushes everyone to go and save her from Shin, even though she doesn’t need saving. Sasuke has been unconciously craving a family for a long time, which is also undertsandable. He bit the bullet (of being in Konaha) and stayed with Sakura and Sarada in the village after she was born on the road. They raised her together for a few years until the threat of the Ootsutsuki appeared and he had to leave to research and keep an eye on this new threat.
2. Sasuke also wants to protect the village the same way Itachi did, from the shadows, to honor his memory. He’s the one powerful enough, besides Naruto & Sakura, to do so. Naruto & Sakura have enough to take care of where they’re at.
3. Sakura has many obligatory reasons to stay in Konoha. She’s the best medical shinobi in Konoha, hell in the shinobi world, and she’s needed there. She’s also the strongest Kunoichi in the village, the strongest to come out of Konoha since Tsunade. She needed a permanant and semi-safe (Konoha isn’t completely safe imo) home to raise Sarada, as well. Might as well be the place Sasuke is watching out for and that the Uchiha originally inhabited. It was too dangerous to raise her on the road, with them being who they are, especially with Sarada being a new Uchiha. She’d immediately become a target, she kinda already is, so travelling with her as young child was out of the question.
4. Besides the logical and obvious reasons (at least I’d hope they were obvious but, I worry about some of y’all) there’s also, for lack of a better word, to keep the original appeal of SasuSaku. They were originally star-crossed lovers, loving each other from a distance, each unable to reach the other. The more I look at and analyze Gaiden and what Kishi has to say about it, that much is apparent.
5. Now, the only reason I think we don’t see much SS romance, besides the aforementioned reasons, is because Sasuke is a very private person. It’s canon that Sasuke doesn’t show affection towards Sakura unless they’re alone. Even around Sarada, Sasuke likes to keep things .. clean ? Though, the only times we see Sasuke genuinely look happy or smile is around Sarada and Sakura. He smiles after teasing Sakura before leaving the village at the end of Gaiden (the fact that it’s canon that Sasuke likes to tease Sakura because she’s so thirsty for him is so cute and comical to me), he smiles when telling Sarada that the proof of his love for Sakura is her existence, he smiles when he sees her use her Sharingan in battle for the first time against Shin and use Sakura’s Chakra Enhanced Strength, he smiles at Sarada pretty much every time she breathes, and well .. same pretty much goes for Sakura, too. He looks at Sakura much differently than he does anyone else, very warmly, and he’s very gentle with her. If we were ever shown them alone together, we’d have an entirely different picture painted.
Those are my 3 am thoughts on the current state of SasuSaku, I hope it wasn’t too rambly. It just really bothers me when people overlook these things and say Sasuke hates his family. It just isn’t true, at all. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that SS is valid.
