Okay, so there's a bunch of angsty fan art of Zoro killing Sanji but what about the aftermath? What if a crew mate comes in and thinks Zoro and Sanji are dumb fighting. But then they see a sword pulled out of Sanji... and he's not moving... there's so much blood. They panic, they rush to Sanji's side to try to wake him and stop the bleeding. They need to get Sanji to Chopper! They're confused, surely Zoro wouldn't kill him, they must be mistaken. Why isn't Zoro reacting? Do something we have to help him! They get Sanji to Chopper and the rest of the crew but he's dead... Zoro explains what happened. Some of the crew are understanding, some are too grief stricken... and some are furious. They grab Zoro. They shout and scream at him. For not telling them. For not even trying another option. For daring to kill Sanji. He stands there numbly while they scream and cry.

When they get back to the ship, Zoro shuts himself away in the crows nest. He trains. He trains even when it hurts. He trains when he's exhausted. No one can bring him into the galley because no one will be there to hurl insults and dumb names at him. No one threatening to kick him. No one to tease and rile up. No delicious cooking he never complimented. No one to spar with. Another precious friend gone. Another rival to push him gone... Zoro trains until he physically can't any more and collapses. He thinks of all the times he had Sanji's back. The times he saved Sanji from a hit. The time he knocked Sanji out to protect him. After everything, he was the one to take Sanji's life.

He finally cries.

I'm not even ten minutes into episode 6 and I'm already dying over the found-family-display we're getting presented here. I don't even know where to start.

  • Nami being the only braincell once again, staying behind despite having been on the brink of leaving, just to make sure Zoro wouldn't die and gets treated well.
  • Luffy experiencing not only severe cases of shock, on the brink of PTSD, based on fears of abandonment and just... I've already spoilt myself, so I know the food-related "love language" will be expanded upon in this episode even further by paralleling Luffy's attitude towards Zoro with Zeff's attitude towards Sanji, but already... The fact that Luffy has lost appetite (which was mentioned twice at this point), prioritizing Zoro, his health and everything that's precious to him is just... It's all I could have asked for. Him valuing his beloved sword, having tried to remember its name since he knows it's so important to him... Him asking Sanji to cook his favourite food... And while Sanji warns him to make the right choices, we can tell, Zoro is all that's on his mind at this point.
  • And Sanji, oh Sanji... He's so enchanted by Luffy, the conversation they previously had, talking about dreams and free will and everything... He's already willing to dedicate his life to Luffy as well, doing everything for him. With the most charming voice+expression you can imagine.
  • Usopp is, unfortunately, still a little bit in the back in all of this, not on the same level of depth as the Romance Dawn Trio, but I KNOW we will get there.

I keep thinking about episode 2 and its whole structure revolving around Luffy's straw hat.

Even the title already - The Man In The Straw Hat.

When we saw Nami throw it off, in the beginning of the episode, it was one of the first times Luffy looked angry and serious.

Then Nami says: "Why do you care so much about that old thing anyway? It looks like you fished it out of the trash."

and Luffy explains "One man’s trash is another man’s treasure."

Then throughout the whole episode there's small moments that actually show how important that hat is to Luffy, including being relieved Buggy's pirates didn't take his hat (as they did with Zoro's swords and Nami's bag with navigator things - both incredibly rare and precious possessions of theirs.)

Buggy starts to mess with Luffy because he sees what the hat means to him, because of his connection to Shanks.

and because Buggy wants the map, which Luffy has, well, close by on himself.

"Of course, you could always give me my map if you don’t want to die alone in this tank."

and after Luffy gets free from the water tank and throws up the map, he lands close to his hat,

and even with the map being just beside Luffy, (he could have taken it again), all he could see was his hat.

and only after that, when the hat was safely in his hands, on his head, he could focus on getting the map back and win against Buggy.

it was like he couldn't think about following his dream (to which the map was the only clue to lead him to the Grand Line), until his straw hat was back with him, because his dream is also returning it to Shanks while becoming the King of the Pirates.

Just - Luffy reaching for his hat instead of the map, which the map almost began the whole adventure in episode 1 - it seems so interesting.

He always goes on about his dream to go to the Grand Line, but once his hat isn't on his head, he panics.

Something about that moment tells more about Luffy as a person than even his words about his dream, it shows where his heart is. It's so good.

and,

at the end of this episode,

I love that it goes back to show how Nami fixes and repairs the hat for Luffy, it makes the full circle with that connection between them.

"You fixed it. Thanks."

"Well, you said it was your treasure, right?"

PLS.. share thoughts on zoro n sanji relationship........ i dont ship them but they are so. SOOOOO.

THEY MAKE ME CRAZZYYYYY. and honestly the way their dynamic make me insane doesnt even HAVE to be read as romantic. But i feel so much crazier when i see them shipped and its not even capitalizing on all the shit theyve got going on.

So anyways here's my Zoro and Sanji retrospective I spent several hours on I guess. As if it's my fault.

▪︎

When Zoro and Sanji meet, Sanji has given up on his dream to see the All-Blue in favor of supporting Zeff.

Zoro is still throwing himself at his dream to be the greatest swordsman with all his might, and nearly dies to Mihawk for it.

Initially, from Sanji's outside perspective, it seems like a waste of precious life.

Zoro promising never to disappoint Luffy when he's on death's door clearly makes Sanji reconsider, though.

I adore the fact that the moment Zoro heard Nami’s scream, he immediately went full protective mode! I think besides Chopper, Nami is also someone that he has a soft spot for—as he had protected her a few times before (Orange Town, Alabasta, Skypiea, Punk Hazard)

Zoro’s consternation here is so funny to me because he totally did this to himself. He knows he’s easy to manipulate and yet he’s still allowing it to happen.

Zoro will allow himself to be manipulated even if he isn’t thrilled about it because he trusts Nami’s judgment. If he didn’t actually trust her decision, if he was actually worried about the situation, he would have put his foot down. The goofy way he’s stomping away gives the impression he just lost some kind of game and now he’s sulking about it,

This is part of the thing I mentioned earlier about how Zoro and Nami maintain the emotional balance of the crew. As long as one of them is annoyed and the other is calm you know the situation is actually fine and everybody’s just messing around.

Dishonorable mention for bowdlerizing both of their lines. Zoro says Nami is going to die a bad death and she replies, “Oh yes, I’m going straight to hell.” It’s such a tame line there’s really no reason to change it, and I feel like it muddies Zoro’s character.

the intimacy of sharing old memories with someone new. check out the places i visited before i met you. i wish you were with me. maybe we can visit them together and create new memories? look at the pictures of the sky i took before we met. now you share the same view with my past self. look at the photos of my childhood and let me look at yours. have your facial features changed? your smile stayed the same, and i love it. look at my right cheek, i have the same birthmark as my grandmother. this is the child in me that you are healing with your affection. i am glad we met. all these years i was without you but now you know about all those years and even help me to grow. your love took roots in my past pain, and reaches out to my future happiness. please don't stop smiling.

i was at a little park fest thing today and someone was there with their cats who were trained to hang out in a stroller?? like they were SO chill it was amazing. the cats were obviously enjoying themselves and were very well trained to stay right in or under their catmobile.

until, that is, i rolled up in my wheelchair and one of them turned and saw my vaguely stroller-like contraption and *immediately* jumped out of his cat-approved-stroller to climb around on my chair like OH WOW WHEN DID WE GET ANOTHER WHEELEY THING YAY! :D

i was like sir you are not supposed to be here and he just looked up at me like oh yes i am ! i must stay in wheeled contraption !!! and he was wearing a lil bowtie so i could not argue with him
