This is going to be a bit of a rant but when and why did we stop teaching people that Internet is forever and you should be careful about what you put out there? That's what I was constantly told when I was younger but now suddenly we have young people crying on TikTok, airing out their dirty laundry in front of everyone on YouTube, oversharing, posting pictures barely covering their genitals or in general stuff they will cringe about in a few years. Okay yes, you can delete it but people take screenshots.
When I was younger we had entire lectures from adults about internet safety and how everything you put out there stays there and now you see OnlyFans models saying: "Oh well, once I don't want my nudes online anymore I just text my lawyer and he takes them off, it's that simple"🤦🤦🤦 with confidence. Where did this come from?
Also young people seem not to understand that other people see the things they put out there, it's not their personal diary. People will see it, form an opinion about them based on it and comment on it. My sister was just complaining to me that a classmate is "stalking" her because she opens her stories without following her. Like honey, that's not the same as stalking. You put that out there. Ofc it's weird that she is actively searching for her to look at her stories without following her, but still it is something that she actively chose to post. If she doesn't want people to see it, she should not post it.
Or I saw a post here on Tumblr saying that if you look at someone's blog without their "consent" it's like you're standing in their doorway looking into their room when they asked you to leave, which no it's not the same. You actively choose to put out content on your blog for other people to see it. If you don't want people to see it, write it in a personal diary.
Anyway, I think we should bring back teaching young people to be mindful of their online behavior and more importantly to go touch grass sometimes instead of constantly posting every detail of their lives online.
