Work Smarter, Not Harder: study tips psychology taught me

  • study in shorter intervals and take breaks (ie, 40 minutes studying and 20 minutes break)
  • during your break don’t watch tv or surf the internet. get outside if you can and go for a walk. or at least listen to some instrumental music and walk around your hall. or meditate or do some art. anything that doesn’t require super directed attention. this allows your attention to be replenished. it’s like a muscle and you gotta give it time to rest. tv doesn’t allow for that.
  • relate the information to yourself and your life. creating visual images will improve your memory.
  • when studying, take notes by hand and put them in your own words. generating material yourself will encode the material better in your brain, and you’ll remember it better
  • don’t just reread, rehearse! quiz yourself on the materials. if you use a visual image “memory palace” technique, walk yourself through it. you’re likely to remember information you’ve tested yourself on better.
  • organizing information into groups that make sense create more connections in your brain and allow you to remember things better. the more meaningful connections you make, the better.
  • make sure the last thing you do before bed is study. no phone, no netflix. your brain will process what you’ve just done while you sleep and this improve recall.

(feel free to add any!)

Redefining My Bullet Journal System

The bullet journal is probably something you’re no stranger to. It’s been circulating around the internet for a while, and it’s one of the main subjects of studyblr posts. However, when I started college last semester, I found that I no longer relied on my bullet journal to organize my tasks and structure my responsibilities anymore. Instead, I tried out a bunch of productivity/task-organization apps: Taskade, Actions by Moleskine, Any.do, Todoist, Wunderlist. None of them seemed to have what I needed, so I decided to give the bullet journal method another try.

The first thing I reflected on was why I stopped in the first place. At first I thought it was because the method itself allowed for a lot of freedom and I’d get confused as to what things to include and how to structure everything. But then I realized that it was in fact because I had previously been bullet journaling for other people instead of myself. Since I had what one could call an ‘artsy bullet journal’, I tended to focus more on the artistic aspect so that it would get more likes and reblogs after I posted it, when I should have been focusing on how it can organize my life. I realized that the bullet journal is a tool; the focus should be on life itself, not the bullet journal, but you can use the bullet journal to add value to your life.

At the beginning of the year, I deconstructed my organizational needs and attempted to apply that to my bullet journal method. I stopped looking at other people’s bullet journals and started thinking about my own needs and preferences. I thought about how I would best organize my time so that I could accomplish all of the things I want to accomplish in the different aspects of my life.

Supplies

The fact that I only have 2 main supplies allows me to bullet journal anywhere, anytime.

The Structure

The Practice

Simply having the tool to organize your life isn’t enough - you should also have a practice, a habit, for using it.

Going Forward

One thing I’d like to work on is future logging. As of now, I think in terms of months, since the my main commitment at the moment is my education, and monthly planning has worked out for me. But I think if I’d like to tackle on larger projects - e.g. my YouTube channel that I just started - I’d need to do a lot more future logging.

Another useful thing I want to try out is to summarize my journal entries in the form of notes. Recently I’ve been audio journaling (15-20 minutes of me talking to myself), and it’s been pretty effective. However, I have no way of ‘skimming’ the entries like I would a written journal entry. Summarizing them would help me retain main ideas of each entry and remember the things I said that are or could potentially be important and useful.

Final Thoughts

If you don’t think your bullet journal is adding value to or improving productivity and organization in your life, I think you should reconsider the way you’re approaching the system. I found a method that works for me; yours might be different. While it can be beneficial to draw inspiration from other people, do whatever helps you the most, not what other people tell you you should be doing. After coming up with an appropriate structure, make sure you maintain the practice.

Creepypasta #1438: I Think My Brother Is A Bird

Length: Short

Well before I start, lemme give you some background about my brother, growing up, he was older then me by one year, for the most part we got along with the occasional argument, but we had a strong relationship. When we were growing up, (I will call him Tim) Tim always had a thing for birds, he was so fascinated about how they go on with their lives, how they can fly, you know, all the basic bird stuff.

So when he turned 15 he took his fascination of birds up a notch, he began going on bird watching tours around our house and when we would go on vacations as a family, Tim would go on bird watching tours rather then come with us on the tours we went on. He began buying books full of each countries unique birds, every time he would see one in the wild, he would cross it off.

Once he turned 20 he dropped out of college and managed to get hired as a biologist’s assistant. The biologist traveled the world studying birds for the government so my brother tagged along to identify more and more birds. When Tim was 25, I had just got my PhD and became a therapist, he was on a flight back from the Galápagos Islands when the flight he was on got caught in a massive storm. The plane sent out a mayday just before crashing

After 3 days they found the wreckage, all 15 passengers plus the pilot were presumed dead due to the water conditions during the storm.

3 months after the crash, all bodies were found, except the biologist my brother worked for had actually managed to survive and was out at sea for five days before washing ashore and being taken to a hospital.

I met with him and he said he knows my brother was for sure dead because he saw him get sucked under water.

After another month, something weird began happening, a sparrow started showing up by my house everyday.

Every morning, I would walk out to my car, and there it was, sitting at the same spot staring at me while on my car. The first time it happened I tried scaring it but it wouldn’t even move. It just glared at me. Once I turn my car on and start moving my car, he flies up into a tree, and everyday when I get home he is right on my porch staring at me.

After a few weeks, the sparrow did something different, it flew into my house as I opened the door and flew into my room. I sighed because I didn’t want to be late to work but I had to take this little guy outside before he takes a shit everywhere. When I walked into my room, he was on my desk holding a paper picture of my brother staring at me.

I started crying, this bird is my brother, it has to be, he must have come back to earth in the form of a bird, although I sounded crazy to myself thinking this, but what other explanation is there?!? He never tries flying away, sits on my car everyday and is on my porch when I get home, now he’s calmly sitting on my desk holding a picture of Tim.

I put my hand out and he hops on, gently pecking my hand, it really must be him.

It’s been 5 weeks since, he still lives in my house, this bird, no - Tim, Tim lives in my house, I leave a ton of food and water for him and leave a window open so he can go out and do whatever. I feel so comfortable knowing my brother is still in this world, watching me and making sure nothing happens to me.

Stage one Remember when we were 5, 6 ,7 and 8 when we played knights in backyards, pretending to be kings and queens? Remember when all that mattered to us was who won in the game of hide and seek, or whose birthday came next week? Remember when the only thing we were scared of was the boogie man or the monster under our beds? remember when the only thing we cried about was the broken wheel on our favourite toy car? or the broken head of our favourite barbie, remember the one with the purple dress? or maybe that lost teddy bear named Fred? Remember when the only games we played were Hide and seek or hopscotch. When we wanted to be 13, 14, 15, 16? now look here we are, 13, 14 ,15, 16 Growing up is a confusion, a lost hope, a delusion where everybody is waiting- waiting for you to break down where the things we are scared of are Failing a test or Isolation A time where one problem like stuttering can shut you us a place where it is hard to know who you your friend is who is not who to trust who to not. growing up is an illusion an obsession a revolution a place where one mistake can mess everything up. this is the stage one of growing up

I am happy to present my own Wamily’s version of finding your signifier card using a Tarot deck.  (Wamily, just in case you don’t know, is a witch family.)

Please keep in mind that this is a practice passed down and developed by a handful of witches related to me, and isn’t the process that every cartomancer uses.  I hope this helps you on your witchcraft journey!

My own signifier card was found when I was a wee little witch.  I chose the Chariot (which, if you know me personally, is Salt through and through.)  My strengths and limitations are very much found in this card and I am drawn to its imagery indefinitely.

Comment with your signifier card once you find it!  I am excited to see what you receive.

One of the most common questions I am asked is how to start and run a studyblr. Some people consider being a studyblr means having a selection of certain pens or highlighters but that isn’t the case. Having a studyblr is about being part of a community that promotes self-improvement, positive study habits and tips to help yourself and others reach their full potential. Below are a few steps I recommend when starting a studyblr:

1. Decide whether you’re going to start a new blog or a secondary blog. Most studyblrs, myself included, run main blogs and then a studyblr as a side blog. If you’re wanting to have a completely new account, follow only studybrs, message (via asks) with a link to your studyblr then it is best to create a new account. If you’re happy to continue on one account, then creating a side blog is a good option. However, when you use a secondary blog for your studyblr, it will follow as your main account. I prefer having my studyblr as a secondary blog since you can stay logged into one account (so much easier on mobile!). Plus if you wanted to run a collaboration blog, you can add other members. Here is so more detailed information about the differences.

2. Pick a username/URL. You can be super creative like me and just use your name! Otherwise, you can name your studyblr anything you want. Whilst most people have a study related username, that isn’t totally necessary. Find something you like and use it! You do have the option to change it later on it you’re unhappy or think of something better.

3. Choose a theme. My best advice for a theme is pick something that is easy to navigate and nice to look at! Editing HTML can be quite difficult for first time Tumblr users, however many themes make adjusting the appearance of your theme really simple by using the tools on the customise page. Some popular theme makers include:

Once you’ve picked a theme, follow the instructions the theme maker has left in the caption of the post. When you’re using a theme, remember to leave credit visible to the owner. By removing credit you’re breaking the conditions set by the creator.

4. Make an icon. This is relatively optional. Most studyblrs just use a random picture for their icon however others create personalised ones just for their blog. You can create your own icon using applications like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Canva or Word/Pages. Canva is probably the easiest way to make your own, plus it is free! If you’re looking for something a little fancier, you can commission @annistudio to make one! Depending on the level of complexity, she charges between $3-9. She created my icon and it is so amazing!

5. Write up an introductory post. Once your blog is up and running, you should create a post to introduce yourself. Tell us a little bit about yourself, where you’re from, what you’re studying, your hobbies, etc. It is always nice to tag some of your favourite studyblrs! If someone has mentioned me or tagged #emmastudies in their post, I might see it and reblog it. Most blogs do the same! Making these posts will hopefully get you some new followers!

6. Post your own content. A great way to promote your blog is to upload your own posts. This can be anything, either pictures of your notes, advice posts, or infographics! Remember to update the content source and click-through links when uploading your posts. A little guide to taking photos can be found here. My editing process can also be found here. If you upload your own tips posts, feel free to submit them to @studyblrmasterposts.

7. Use popular hashtags. Before publishing your post remember to add hashtags. The most popular ones include #studyblr, #studyspo, #study. I track the tag #emmastudies so include that in your tags and I’ll see it! Most blogs also track their usernames so tag some of your favourites.

8. Join studyblr networks. You’ll often see these floating around Tumblr so if you see one, join it! There are ones dedicated to people graduating in a specific year, others for specific majors, or people who share a common trait/hobby! Alternatively, you can be added to my studyblr directory. It is a collection bloggers which can be filtered by categories such as education level, country, and exam system. You can apply here.

9. Use the queue option. By using the queue option, you don’t have to come on Tumblr every day to stay active. Set up a queue, select the number of posts and when you’d like them to be published and you’re ready to go. This option is great if you’re having a bit of an off-week and don’t fancy coming online or aren’t able to access the Internet!

10. Use other social media platforms. Whilst studyblr originated on Tumblr, we have since diversified across numerous different social networks. I’d totally recommend having a studygram! Mine is @emmastudiess if you wanted to check it out! Other accounts have YouTube (emma studies), Snapchat (@emmastudies), Spotify, Twitter, etc. Remember to provide links to your each account!

11. Be nice, friendly and polite. I think this is the golden rule for any blogger. Treat everyone with respect. Be kind when answering questions. Be grateful for your followers. Please, please, please don’t send anonymous hate! If you receive it, remember to delete and block that person. The studyblr community is one of the nicest I’ve come across and we want to keep it that way.

12. Don’t be afraid to message other blogs and start a friendship! Interact with other accounts by sending them an ask or a direct message. I cannot begin to tell you how many wonderful people I’ve connected with from the studyblr community. I’d say the majority of studyblrs love receiving messages and would be happy to strike up a friendship with you!

I hope this can inspire you to start a studyblr or helps you set one up! Remember you can tag me in your introductory posts or uploaded pictures. Also, my ask and direct messages are always open if you want to chat xx

let me tell you something: no one is going to look at you, broken and shattered and think - damn, you are beautiful. no one is going to come pick up your broken pieces off the floor and assemble them into a beautiful whole. hell, you won’t even look at yourself and think - I made broken look beautiful. you know why? because all those writers lied to you. yes, all those with their poems of scraped knuckles and blood dripping down chins, pomegranate songs and loves that ripped through you like hurricanes. liars. so you and i, we are going to make a plan. you are not going to romanticize days when your brain tells you to smash that mirror, you are not going to romanticize the lover who doesn’t understand you but still writes about you. here is what you are going to romanticize instead: you are going to romanticize the first day of spring, its gentle hands all over your body, lifting you up until you are as light as a feather. you are going to romanticize the tea and honey kind of love, no hurricanes, but sunshine that builds you up from within, that helps you make it through the worst days. you are going to romanticize gentle hands of a friend in yours, telling you that it is going to be okay. because it is. and don’t trust poets, we’re no good, we love pretending that our jagged edges tantamount to a beautiful disaster, but in reality - there ain’t nothing beautiful about shaky hands holding a cigarette and empty eyes staring at the cracks in the walls. you know what is beautiful, instead? the days when you can look at yourself in the mirror and smile, scars and all. music that makes your soul flow like a river, books that offer comfort, families flocking together like overgrown birds to keep you safe and warm, friends that give you strength when you can find none, lovers who make you laugh through tears. baby, from now on you are going to romanticize healing; honey dripping down your fingertips, August nights that stick to your skin, the day you find your purpose, long car rides and singing so loud that no one can shut you up now. bad news: no one is coming to save you. good news: you can save yourself.

Hey guys! So as some of you may know, I recently hit my goal of 3k which is unbelievable. Over my time here on the tumblr-sphere, many of you guys have asked me how I studyblr, where I get supplies, and what my inspirations are, so here’s a little master post full of amazing tips, youtube channels, online shops, masterposts and other cool things that hopefully inspire you to your full productive potential.

Disclaimer: I understand that making your notes or bullet journal pretty might seem useless or stupid to some people, but making things look nice motivates me personally to keep myself productive and excited about studying/organization. I am including these “pretty things” in my master post because they are what my followers tend to ask me about the most. Be kind to others and motivate one another in any way you can!

Study Tips

These masterposts are literally everything you need to help you study. I especially like the ones about memory, because I have a terrible one!

Bullet Journals/Notes

Because, what really is a studyblr without a bullet journal? These links don’t really show you how to bullet journal (because there are a whole lot of master posts about that anyway PLUS this is already a super long post) but they’ll give you more inspiration for your bullet journal.

Youtube

Idk about you guys but I have just recently gone back to being completely youtube obsessed. Like, I took a break for a while and now that it’s summer break I’ve been absolutely immersing myself in this stuff. It may seem unrelated to anything studyblr, but have no fear; the studyblr community lives in all corners of the internet! (thanks @ god)

  • Studyign- aka the incredible @studyign has the studyblr channel we all need in our lives. Like, seriously. She’s made videos of her bullet journal, hauls, AP classes, study tips, and more, alongside the most adorable and clean-cut graphics; uhh, goals much?? Be sure to check her out!
  • Katsdesk- aka @katsdesk okay we all know how amazing Kat is and, guess what? Alongside her beautiful tumblr account she also has a youtube channel! Take a look inside of her beautiful bullet journal, let her talk you through college applications, or even just bask in the glory of her lookbooks, because, she cute.
  • Rachel El- Rachel’s bullet journal really makes me envious because it’s so clean and pretty! Her videos vary from bullet journal flip-throughs to minimalist living; you guys. the amount of aesthetic is unreal.
  • Hails Hearts NYC- not a studyblr, but a treat for all you book nerds to there! Hailey has great videos including amazing spoiler-free reviews and book recommendations when you’re looking for something new to start reading or you’re not sure if you want to continue more books in a series. Everything she does is completely spoiler-free which is really great!
  • LaurDIY- ok so Lauren isn’t a studyblr account, but she makes these amazing DIYs that are 1) ADORABLE and 2) useful for school and organization! Her channel is so great for anyone who loves crafts and being creative. Everything she makes is super cute, affordable, AND easy to make. Many of the DIYs she does are based off of items that you might find at urban outfitters or anthropology that are too overpriced. I’ve linked her Back To School playlist but you should really just check out her whole channel; she even has a video on DIYs that help with anxiety!

Shopping/Supplies

Honestly, I’d be lying to you guys if I didn’t tell you that basically everything I use to create my bullet journal is from Target or Amazon, many for price reasons. BUT here are some other great brands/stores that you may find super useful in order to make the bullet journal of your dreams!

  • Muji- oh, the mother of all studyblrs. I have to admit that although I hate being so basic (guilty) I absolutely LOVE shopping at muji. Can it be a bit pricey? yes. Is the quality worth it? yes. But can you find some muji supplies on amazon? absolutely. Look, I’m super upset that I have no muji stores where I live, but I’m also kind of thankful because if I did I would be spending my money over there 24/7! The hype is real.
  • Target-  To those of you who don’t have target, I actually feel really bad for you because I basically live there. Like, target is my heart and soul. They have everything. A grocery store, makeup section, and even clothes… Including an office section for super cute planners, washi tapes, stickers, binders, among other various things from all kinds of different brands. If you live in the states you can basically find them around any corner. Target. The love of my life.
  • CuteTape.com- I don’t actually know if they have an actual store that you can go to, but this online shop is full of adorable tapes! Go crazy, you deserve it.
  • Bando.com- the hype is real, y'all. honestly Ive never boughten anything from here because its a bit pricey, but it’s a great source of inspiration! The colors, the graphics, the stickers, their use of including local artists in their agendas is amazing and so inspiring. And if you have the money to invest in one of their adorable agendas, then go for it!
  • A Beautiful Mess- I’ve been following this blog since I was in middle school, and let me tell you how stoked I was when they opened and online store! Mainly for scrapbooking, these sisters have designed amazing supplies for any planner or calendar. Obviously the sale section is my favorite… I scored two pages of some awesome letter stickers over there for $2!

Music

Positivity/Self Care

You guys know that I’m always down for a pep-talk with myself, so self-care is essential when dealing with stress from school. Here are some things to help!

I hope you guys found this helpful, and if you want me to put together another master post of a more specific subject, just hit up my ask box! Love ya xxx

A Guide to Writing Your Resume

I recently took a very helpful youth professional development course and learned some great things I’d love to share with everyone. This post will be especially helpful for first time resume writers, but there might be something in it for everyone.

1. What is a Resume?

A resume is a brief summary of your abilities, experience, and skills. It’s essentially a personal advertisement for your professional career, an opportunity to convince the employer that you are worth interviewing.

  • The average employer will only take about 15-20 seconds to read your resume.
  • It’s important that your resume is neat so the reader can find important information quickly.
  • Limit the resume to one page.
  • Standard font size is 11-12, but you can play with the font or margins to fit everything.

2. Headings

  • Start with your personal information at the top of the first page (name, address, phone number, and email address).
  • Keep the header centered and your name on top in BIG LETTERS.

3. Education

  • If you are still in school or have little professional experience, this will likely be the first section in your resume.
  • Document your education and graduation year.
  • Include the location (city, state), but do not include the school address.
  • If you attend a school with a College Preparatory Curriculum, you may list that as a bullet underneath. If you are taking Honors or AP classes (or an international equivalent), feel free to list that as well.

4. Professional Experience

  • List your work experience in reverse chronological order - start with your most recent experience, and work backwards.
  • Include the employer name, city, state, and position title for each. Again, no addresses.
  • Record your dates of employment consistently, using a format like June 2016 - August 2015, or 6/15 - 8/15. Staying consistent will make your resume professional.
  • Place current jobs in the present tense, past jobs in the past tense.
  • Write short phrases, not full sentences (”performed experiments”, not “I performed experiments”). Start each description with an action word that describes your skills, responsibilities, or accomplishments.
  • Make sure you are specific about your responsibilities and don’t undersell yourself!

5. Skills

  • Most commonly listed skills are computer programs and softwares you are comfortable with, and languages you are fluent/proficient in.
  • Be honest! If you say you’re fluent in Spanish and you’re not, but your employer hires you for your Spanish abilities…. someone isn’t going to be pleased.
  • List skills that are relevant to your job - patience might be a good skill for working with children, while organized might be more suitable for an office setting.

6. Honors & Awards/Extracurriculars

  • List any honors or awards you have earned, including a brief explanation if the nature of the award is unclear.
  • List any activities that you have been involved in, making sure to include years of participation (again, be consistent with formatting). These can be in-school or outside-of-school activities.

7. General & Miscellaneous

  • Some safe fonts: Times New Roman, Garamond, Calibri, or Book Antiqua.
  • Make sure your email is professional! This has been repeated to death but it’s so, so, so important.
  • Likewise, if you list your personal cellphone number, make sure your voicemail message is appropriate. When in doubt, just revert back to the standard voicemail greeting.

I hope this was helpful for anyone just starting out with their resume. Please share this for those who need it. Best of luck!

- Ellie
