hello all!!! welcome!! heres some info that didnt fit in my about because i have a lot to say! and feel free to message me i love asks and dms and suchforth!

tagging habits:

  • first please feel free to lmk if youd like anything specific tagged and ill do my best <3
  • i tag spoilers for new content! tags are both for abbreviation and full name (ex: ‘dsc spoilers’ and ‘discovery spoilers’) and i try to tag spoilers on new promotional stuff as well
  • shows are all tagged by abbreviation, movies by abbrev and usually also full movie title
  • i try to tag all ships and all characters by name, for names some are the full and some just first or last, but i keep it internally consistent! (ex: i always tag deanna troi as troi and not deanna, usually ive defaulted to whatevers both unique and fast to type)
  • sometimes i also tag episodes if its a fave (ex: shore leave, a piece of the action, a fistful of datas, trouble with tribbles, threshold, far beyond the stars - the kind that are iconic and easy to spot lol)
  • **please shoot me a message if you notice a mistag or typo, those of you that do are literally my faves!!**
  • a few fun curated tags are #playlist series (for my **50+** star trek fanmixes, all linked on spotify)  #parallels (for fun inter-show weaving moments, callbacks, etc), #bts (behind the scenes stuff), #threshold day, and #cosplay
  • all non-trek is tagged as ‘not star trek’

  • *new* movie/tv gifsets, stills, and meta (mostly nonfandom but the line blurs): @silveryscreen

fandom sideblogs (im caught up on everything here, but always tag for spoilers similarly to how i do for trek):

tl;dr -  welcome, and yes i am autistic lmao

What in the actual Devron system was happening with season one and two's dress uniforms? Specifically in the leg area.

Don't get me wrong, I love the overall look: the knee length drapery, the gold clavicle stripe, the chestal accentuation, but WHAT-

WHAT ARE THESE? Are they... sock boots? Sock boot PANTS?? I genuinely don't understand what I'm looking at.

"Hm, yes, sockbootpants are the way of the future. Not a zipper in sight. The Gene will be pleased with me." - someone in the costuming department.

Luckily, by season three, the executive officer in charge of dress uniforms awoke from their stupor and decided that normal pants were fine.

Much less calf accentuation but also much less emotional damage

I've been scanning and restoring some pieces of original Star Trek: TOS film and wanted to share this before and after from a deleted scene in the episode "Elaan of Troyius":

At nearly 60 years old, the film is in bad shape, exhibiting substantial scratches and color shifting. The magenta/red tint is a good example of dye fading, a sign of deterioration likely due to the film stock it was shot on.

Prior to 1950, color motion picture film was shot in Technicolor, which required a large, cumbersome camera to simultaneously expose 3 separate strips of negative film that then underwent a proprietary dye imbibition process to create a full color image. Though visually stunning and remarkably color-stable, it was a complicated, expensive process reserved only for high budget productions. In 1950, Eastman Kodak introduced Eastmancolor, the first 35 mm “single-strip” color motion picture negative -- in short, a film that was easy to shoot and process, and compared to Technicolor, only used a 1/3 of the film stock. Suddenly color film was an affordable option for studios and its popularity took off. Eastmancolor was composed of a single strip of negative film surfaced with 3 layers of light-sensitive gelatin emulsion. During development, a chemical reaction produced magenta, yellow, and cyan dyes on their corresponding layers, which were superimposed to create a full color image. Unfortunately, these dyes were unstable, something that wasn't apparent until aging films began to lose their color in the following years.

The Star Trek image above is pink because its yellow and cyan dyes have faded away, leaving just the magenta layer. The information may be lost, but digital restoration can improve what's left. But because the yellow and cyan greatly contributed to the overall density of the image, basic color balancing still produces a lower contrast version compared to what the original must have looked like. The missing richness and depth seems most apparent in the skin tones, but hand painting some of the color can bring a little life back to it, as I've done here. It's a challenge because, as far as I can tell, the only remaining footage or still shots of this scene show some level of dye fading. Fortunately, now that the film is digitized, restoration can be an ongoing project. If you own any color motion picture film negatives or prints, the sooner you get them scanned the better. In the meantime, helpful storage information can be found here.

It's been a while since I've shot any film (film major), so it's nice to see it again, even if it's chopped up into single frames. I have a small collection of them so I'll post more restored images as they're completed. BTW @cheer-deforest-kelley has a great post on how this film went from the editing room floor to the hands of fans.

personal log, stardate 47329.4. i finally realized why i've had trouble sleeping the last few nights. yesterday was the fourth anniversary of the massacre at wolf 359... the fourth anniversary of jennifer's death.

[ID: 8 gifs from season 2, episode 9 “second sight” from the tv series “star trek: deep space nine”, the gifs show benjamin sisko and jake sisko within their personal quarters, seated on the couch.

1st gif: the gif shows benjamin from the side and jake from the front up close. benjamin has his arm wrapped around jake's shoulder. jake tells his dad, "dad, i... i love you." his is looking downwards.

2nd gif: the camera cuts to a different angle showing benjamin from the front and jake from the side up close. jake is still looking downwards when benjamin tells him, "i love you, too." benjamin moves to kiss jake on his temple.

3rd gif: benjamin kisses jake on the temple, he checks on jake to make sure he is okay.

4th gif: "oh, i have a calculus test in the morning." jake recalls.

5th gif: the camera cuts to a different angle showing benjamin from the side and jake from the waist up. benjamin pats jake on the shoulder and tells him, "then you better get some sleep." "yeah."

6th, 7th, 8th gif: jake pauses on the way to bed, he calls out "dad?" and benjamin hums in response, "hmm?" "i miss her." jake tells his dad, who replies with "me, too." jake goes through the door and the camera focuses on benjamin who looks at his chess board and reaches for a piece./end ID]
