👋 US. Semi-useless half-academic. Cat lady, horse girl, star wars trash. please feed me bananas foster.

the genius of megamind (beyond the obvious genius ofc) is that it's superman parody actually presents a genuinely unsettling depiction of the "hero" that I like wayyy better than "what if superman was evil" or "what if superman was wrong"... it's "what if superman didn't care"

I wouldn’t say he “didn’t care” more like he was burnt out

He played the role since he was a child and now is in his what 30s? 40s?

He knew there was never any real danger with Megamind in charge so decided to pursue something that’s a passion and doesn’t come naturally easy to him

but it was still a dick move

One of the things that always jumped out to me about this reveal is that it implies that Metro Man was also the very first person to recognize that MegaMind wasn’t really evil. He knew his nemesis wouldn’t actually hurt anyone if he won, he knew that this universally reviled pariah never really had any more choice than he did.

The rest of Metro City treats MegaMind like a real, sincere, serious threat once he’s unopposed, and it takes them a while to learn otherwise. But Metro Man? He’s not surprised to see him and Roxanne working together, he doesn’t act like there’s any kind of threat beyond his cover being blown. He wastes no time in coming clean once the cat’s out of the bag. He’s been working with this guy all his life. Besides his own mental health, I get the impression that he also recognized that this would be good for MegaMind too.

I just really love how in a superhero pastiche that asks “Is the villain really so bad, and the hero really so good?” the answer is “no, but that’s okay”. It’s okay that Metro Man isn’t a paragon. It’s okay that he has to take care of himself. It’s okay for him to step down and live his own life. It wouldn’t be okay for him to leave people in danger, but it’s pretty clear he knew he wasn’t doing that.

And it carries to the end. MegaMind becomes the city’s new protector, but it’s clear that he’s still got some issues to work through, and he’s getting help working through them. He’s got a support network, he’s willing to put in the effort, but he’s not the shining paragon Metro Man was believed to be. And he doesn’t NEED to be that paragon. He’s still good. He’s still protecting people. And he’s not alone in it.

God, there’s just so many shitty “Superheroes would have character flaws too, and that’s why they’d actually suck” deconstructions floating around, it’s nice to see a story that acknowledges that no one can live up to that kind of role, but that’s okay!

I have such horse girl fomo, it’s terrible

The girl who runs my barn just got a new horse and I’ve asked her to go riding with me and she’s said no a couple times. Now it seems like every time I come to the barn she and her friend, another boarder, are there and they ride together and post cute pics everywhere and I’m just like two fields away and no one invites me to do anything. Maybe it’s because they’re such good friends, they want to share these early new-horse memories together and not with others. Or maybe it’s because my horse has no chill and would possibly set an antsy vibe for the other horses. Idk it just makes me feel really hollow, partly because I’m never invited but mostly because that is not how anything has ever gone with my horse. It was never a fun chill get to know you time with her. I can’t ride her down the street with a beer in one hand. I can’t ride around in a friends pasture with another loose horse like it’s nothing. I wish I could have that kind of experience with my horse, and while things are improving, she’s still definitely not feeling 100% and I don’t think she’ll ever be chill again, even if the latest round of tests comes back with answers.

It’s getting better, we’re getting better, but I’d give my left leg to have a horse I could just jump on and play around with, with or without people to ride with.

Y’all, my new neighbors are really nice, but they’re such Dog People. And I don’t really feel like a lot of people who have dogs are dog people, you know? Like they have a dog and they love it but it’s not their entire personality? These people are not those. Their dog is very sweet but he is enormous, some kind of mastiff/husky mix. It’s like having a bear around. Which is all well and good, except theyve turned our mutual yard into his play yard.

Don’t get me wrong, all dogs deserve a yard, especially big ones. But this means that when he’s out there’s a big metal gate thing propped up, blocking the way I get to my house. And it means if his parents aren’t out there with him he’ll get defensive and growl and bark at me, and he hasn’t bitten me or anything but it makes me a little nervous. Also sometimes they forget to take the gate down after he’s gone inside. Bo one ever asked me if I was okay with this whole gate thing or the yard being full of his toys or anything, by the way, I came out one day and it was just Like This.

And now today they finally slipped up in their poop scooping duties and left some on the walkway, which I stepped in and got on my doormats and the works of my good boots, so I was out stomping in the rain trying to get it off. And I don’t want to pass ag text them because I’m going to be out of town next week and need them to be on good terms with my pet sitters that are coming by, but like… imagine if I left horse shit on somebody’s stoop lmfao people would be pissed!

Reblog if you think public libraries are important and should be maintained.

I’m like 3/4 of the way done with season two and I can’t really decide if I like the way they’re doing Nikolai or if I’m underwhelmed.

In fairness, what I liked most about him was how much time bardugo had to give to developing his character in siege and storm in order to pique interest rather than irritate the reader. In a show, there’s not as much time for that, especially not in one that seems to be trying to do two books in one go. So I’m bummed that it means less fleshing-out for onscreen-Nikolai in the long run tbh.
