she has no idea what just happened but she convinces herself it was the cruelest and most sadistic intentional prank anyone has ever pulled on her

thinking about how charlotte lost her tail the night of the planetary alignment after convincing lewis to take his boat out to meet her at mako. thinking about how she had no way to get back to the mainland alone after de-transforming in the moon pool. thinking about how lewis had to take her back with him on his boat, how heart-wrenching that journey must have been for her. thinking about how she wouldn’t have remembered anything she did while moonstruck, how her very dignity was taken from her, soaked to the skin on a boat ride with her ex, everything she thought was hers, gone.

“the planets and the fates and all the stars aligned” — when she followed in her grandmothers footsteps and became a mermaid

“what if I told you none of it was accidental/ and the first night that you saw me, nothing was gonna stop me” — when she first saw lewis she knew she had to have him

“you see all the wisest women had to do it this way/'cause we were born to be the pawn in every lover's game — she is literally a pawn used to further lewis and cleo’s relationship

“strategy sets the scene for the tale/I'm the wind in our free-flowing sails” — she feels free as a mermaid, she feels free with lewis

“No one wanted to play with me as a little kid” — only child of a single mother and her grandma passed when she was young

“so I've been scheming like a criminal ever since/to make them love me and make it seem effortless” — she has countless schemes. this line makes me think of the scene where the girls play volleyball together and they all get along for once

she is a mastermind !!!

I understand that whether or not Charlotte should have kept the locket is a little contentious

but

I not only think she should have it

but that Cleo should have given it to her

I know we want Cleo to have the locket so the trio can keep them together, and to maintain the thematic parallels with the 50s trio

but Gracie was Charlotte’s grandmother, with whom she had a strong bond, and wanted to make some kind of connection long before learning the mermaid secret

if it had been Gracie who gave the locket to Cleo, like Louise gifting hers to Emma, it would make more sense for it to be rightfully Cleo’s

but even in the face of their showdown, it feels cruel to take away this very meaningful family heirloom from Charlotte

before Charlotte properly became a villainess Cleo was just openly cold to her out of jealousy, so giving her the locket would have been a way to show that Cleo rose above the pettiness of the love triangle drama and could show Charlotte empathy in spite of what she had done to them

and then in a better use of our parallel narratives, Lewis would ask Max to help him create a new locket especially for Cleo

Max obviously saw himself in Lewis and understood his relationship with Cleo, and I think he would have done that for them

it would still be a part of the set, crafted by Max, but made just for Cleo from Lewis to solidify their bond and parallel Max’s story about Gracie that we just learned

and Charlotte keeps her connection to Gracie

(while also having a memento of her time as a mermaid that could suggest a redemption arc but that’s none of my business)

thinking about how the lives of the early 00s mermaids repeat the patterns of their 1950s counterparts and mend their missteps: karl learned julia was a mermaid and betrayed her for personal gain, whereas zane learned the secret and protected rikki and her friends; max grew overbearing and treated his relationship with gracie like a science experiment, leading to her giving up her tail, while lewis learned to give cleo space and support her without suffocating her. thinking about a future where charlotte and lewis's story repeats, where a headstrong artist and a sensitive scientist get to be best friends, resolving the mistakes made fifty years before.
