Nail Houses | Via

In Chinese cities, investment in new real estate and infrastructure is flowing unabated. High-rises, train stations, and airports are popping up at a velocity that’s sometimes faster than the government can convince people to move.

There are often already people living on the primo land parcels that developers prize most, especially in and around existing cities. These people are generally either evicted with the help of local government or get bought out, often for far less than the original value of their properties. Most residents acquiesce, whether or not they want to.

But sometimes, they don’t. Sometimes, Chinese homeowners refuse to cash in, either because an offer is too low or for more principled reasons, and their property remains standing while the new project shoots up around it. Dingzihu, or “nail houses,” as these won’t-budge properties are called, have become symbols over the past several years of brave defiance of the powerful wealth that’s driving new development. These photographs of nail houses throughout China underscore, in visual terms, their underdog identity—though some of them also show the final nail in the coffin for most nail houses: Demolition.

Overdevelopment, Overpopulation, Overshoot | Via

In the 1950s, the world population was about 2.5 billion people. Today it’s just over 7 billion and estimates for 2050 are between 8.2 and 10.5 billion. Not only do all these people need space to live in, they also need food, Starbucks, and affordable, Eiffel Tower-adorned housewares from Target. As overpopulation becomes a problem, overconsumption and overdevelopment follow. In large, sprawling country like the US, it can be hard to grasp just how big the problem is, not just around the world, but in our own back yard.

Overdevelopment, Overpopulation, Overshoot is a new book that aims to educate the masses about the “over” problem using powerful photos from all over the globe. The book comes from Global Population Speak Out, an organization uniting world-class scientists, academicians, opinion-leaders, and concerned citizens that aims to bring international attention to the crises posed by overdevelopment and human population size and growth.

To order the book for $50 or for info on how you can get the book for free, check out Global Population Speak Out.

Death of a Crow | Liam Cobb | Tumblr | Socks Studio

In Liam Cobb’s tumblr the vignettes, the segments of stories, the disparate panels, all seem to represent scattered instants of a yet undefined dystopian novel. The end of the world is the subject. Rich illustrations of urban decay, drab landscapes, and witty one-liners from lonely characters are the fragments of the universe that this talented illustrator is slowly composing. Here’s a selection, starting from a short story titled “Death of a Crow“, a subtle reference to a classic bizarre ad from the 80’s.

Here are some really general pictures of my working method for doing traditional inks and digital colours! I just thought they might be interesting. I miiight try to do a more detailed walkthrough of my colouring specifically if I have the time.

Last night, Paul Mendoza and I spoke to our animation class about the concept of “Simple vs Complex,” and I thought some of you might find this useful. The idea is to balance a strong pose by contrasting simple and contrast forms.  The simple (stretching) side of a pose is usually your main line of action, while the complex (squashing) side is where you get most of the interest and the focal points of the pose. “Simple vs Complex” also works for individual parts like a flexing arm or a hand pose. This concept enhances clarity, appeal, and energy in any pose.

Bruce Timm’s style illustrates this concept best, but great actors (like the Python troupe) display this kind of posing all the time.

Have at it!

had a few anons asking for tutorials lately and after trying to organise all the random half guides i’ve drawn up over the past few months into one tutorial i’ve just decided to clean up a few and post them separately. So he’s some really basic notes on constructing faces/proportions etc.

that took awhile ! I wanted to add more but then I wouldve needed to spend a whole two days on this haha…. btw if you ask me a qestion in anon, I will take a lot of time to answer because I always answer in a mini comic format ! however, if you ask me stuff without hiding your name I’m much faster :) __ LINKS ___ -my first tutorial on hands (that is less traditional) -in depth hand anatomy -lots of hand model sheets -lots of hand tutorials -THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL hand designs (among others) -MOTORCITY hand designs/model sheet _____ -My other art tutorial

City Strips is an architecture zine printed in London by p—o—i.net, published in 4 issues since February 2014: “The Amazing City”, “Super City”, “The Incredible City” and “Gotham”.

The zines are 32 pages-each collections of spreads from famous comics series such as “The Amazing Spiderman”, “The Superman”, “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Batman”, featuring notable architectures from the original comics and with all characters deleted . The result, defined as: “all action architecture from some of the most read cities of fiction earth“, is a sort of postcard tour across imaginary and desolate territories, or rather, an Archigram of sort publication, without colours and utopian overtones.

Here’s a background tutorial that was intended to hand out to the painters on Over the Garden Wall…I’m actually not sure if I ever did (maybe German or Levon can chime in on this) Anyway, I whipped this up super fast in the early days of pre-production and it might be of interest or help to some aspiring digital painters out there.

EDIT: It was just pointed out to me that there’s a missing step 8…that was a typo in the original document…sorry about that.
