ANDRE BRAUGHER as CAPTAIN RAYMOND HOLT -> Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-2021)

Every time someone steps up and says who they are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place.

Why did you hate the DW episode?

Should probably preface this by saying that I was fuming about David Tennant coming back, even as someone who's favourite Doctor is 10, so these episodes were always going to be an uphill struggle for me.

I haven't really enjoyed these episodes at all, and the bi-generation was the final straw for me. I think my biggest issue with it is that it feels like it undermines Ncuti's Doctor. While there are multiple Doctor's spread across time, I think it's important that there is only one Doctor (and also one TARDIS!). To have them split in half, especially with such a beloved Doctor, feels like making Ncuti less than and not a "whole" Doctor. One of my major concerns about Tennant being back was that it felt like Ncuti was being set up for a fall by having to follow one of the most popular Doctors, who people would inevitably be sad to lose again. This somehow was even worse than that. I don't want to be concerned that DT could show up at any given time, I want to be all in with Ncuti, and I think this sets a slightly silly precedent.

It also cheapens the regeneration process for me. Regenerations are supposed to be painful, it's a time for the viewers and the characters to say goodbye, whilst also facing the excitement of moving on to something new. It felt like a cop out on both of those fronts, especially with 14 (still not happy with that either!) getting to live a whole other life. It all felt very tidy and happily ever after, in a very un-DW like way. There is also the element of been there, done that with the two David Tennants at the end of series 4.

[ID: Five screencaps from Taskmaster. Alex Horne sits on a chair in the middle of an empty white room. Susan Wokoma blindfolds him, saying, "OK, I'm now going to stop talking to you in the Susan manner, 'cause she's gone." Alex asks, "Who's here now?" Susan pauses, then says, "Chain Bastard." End ID.]
