I love what they did to Elma in dragon maid S!
When she was introduced I remember having waited for her for several episodes as she appeared both in the OP and ED of the show. And back then I was kind of dissappointed.
I didn’t find her that funny. Her thing was just “I eat a lot and also I’m on another side of this weird faction thing.”
Dragon maid S however starts off with expanding upon the faction conflict with the introduction of Iruru. Then we get more interactions between Toru and Elma building out their relationship in episode 4.
Followed by their backstory in episode 5 of how they traveled together for decades.
It all culminates in episode 9 when she finally is able to confront Toru about her jealousy. She still wanted to be around her.
