tbh i don't really get why we divide the oceans into different oceans because they're all connected it's the same ocean

no metaphor here just pure confusion...is there a line where one ocean stops and another begins? or is it like a smooth gradient of percentages of one ocean shading into another ocean?

Yes, there is a line. There are confluences you can see and touch and they are NOT subtle in the slightest.

That's the Atlantic and the Caribbean on a particularly pronounced day.

This is the Indian and the Pacific. It's not always this obvious everywhere but the dividing lines are very much there.

Oceans have their own properties as far as temperature and salinity and unless something like a storm or a current forces them to mix they won't. Mostly this applies to vertical mixing and it gives you things like thermoclines and haloclines but water is wierd and won't mix horizontally either.

The ocean basins tend to have their own currents that go in a circle and define that ocean, and those patterns mix the water within that ocean. Like a washing machine.

The Caribbean has a little loop of its own that not on this map, but that current keeps that ocean pretty internally consistent. It's got clear warm water because of the shallow bowl of limestone sand it sits in. Where it meets the Atlantic with wildly different conditions the water is traveling in opposite directions, and it acts kind of like an oncoming lane of highway traffic. Species that have adapted to a narrow band of temperatures and salinities (most fish) can't cross, while species with a stronger homeostasis hang out there on purpose, (marine mammals, turtles, sharks). Plankton, that cannot control their horizontal movement in the water column, are held in their home territories by these barriers.

This is cool as fuck

i love when this shows up in my notes again

When I say obligatory hijab has nothing to do with religion but it's an oppression tool, this is what I mean. When I say burning veils on the streets as an act of protest is a symbol of freedom I mean this. Don't you dare getting mad at us for insulting "islamic values". These are very different issues.

Three Sun Paths Image Credit & Copyright: Marcella Giulia Pace & Giuseppe De Donà

Explanation: Does the Sun follow the same path every day? No. The Sun’s path changes during the year, tracing a longer route during the summer than the winter. Pictured here, the Sun’s arc was captured from noon to sunset on three days, from highest in the sky to lowest: summer solstice, equinox, and winter solstice. The images were taken near Gatto Corvino Village in Sicily, Italy in 2020 and 2021. The path and time the Sun spends in the sky is more important in determining the season than how close the Earth is to the Sun. In fact, the Earth is closest to the Sun in January, during northern winter. Today is a solstice, so today the Sun is taking its longest path of the year across the sky in Earth’s northern hemisphere, but the shortest path in the southern hemisphere.

When I was twenty I was almost shot by a police officer because of my mental illness. I was peeling bark off a tree on public property to calm my anxiety.

Two officers pulled up very quietly in a squad car while I had my back turned. They did not announce their arrival. When I noticed them approaching me by the sound of their footsteps, I was frightened and reached for my phone to record them. They thought I was going for a weapon and one reached for his pistol. I put my hands up.

They illegally detained me and took my ID to run a background check. The one who had started to draw his gun on me asked me if I’d had any thoughts of hurting myself or others.

My background check came up clean. They released me and told me I wasn’t doing anything illegal. I went to my car and bawled my eyes out, thinking about how I’d almost died for the crime of “weird behavior.”

Don’t give these pigs a registry of the mentally ill. They’re already trying to kill us for no good reason.

@ all the idiots commenting on this saying I almost got shot because I reached into my pocket for my phone and not because of my “weird behavior”

  1. For the last time, nowhere in this post did I say my phone was in my pocket. Women’s pockets are too small for that. I was storing my phone in the mesh water bottle pouch on the side of the backpack I was wearing, i.e. an open and see-through compartment too small to conceal a gun and too far off my beltline for a concealed carry
  2. Did you miss the part where the only reason the cops were interacting with me to begin with was because they thought my perfectly benign behavior warranted law enforcement intervention?
  3. Stop making excuses for a person who wasn’t committing a crime almost getting killed by the police

Some ideations of demons for fun, I was thinking about doing a dating sim game while doodling them ahah... but I'm too lazy learning programming. I'll dig more into the idea if I'm motivated.
