Getting a different perspective of things at the Twelve Apostles was a great experience. I guess the same applies in life in general too. When I’m down in the weeds, being totally absorbed by something, I won’t necessarily see the best solution to a problem. These days I try to keep a small portion of my consciousness out of my “life situation”, as @eckharttolle would call it, so I can maintain my self awareness, regardless of what is going on. Since practicing this daily over the last couple of years, I’ve found I stay more calm and have greater empathy and compassion for those around me. I don’t claim to achieve it all the time, but it is improvement for me. A whimsical walk to the Brisbane city botanical gardens was part of a new philosophy I have for work travel: if I’m gonna be somewhere, I’m gonna spend some time checking it out, not just transiting between a tiny “four star” hotel room and an office building. I think the four stars at the hotel, BTW, means someone bribed someone at place where they give out the stars. Yes woe is me - forced to stay in a hotel that was probably only actually a three star hotel. Anyway, I chose to walk to and from work each day, which I’m sure my company appreciated, but it also gave me a chance to see the city; actually feel the air, the humidity, smell the smells and attempt to smile and make eye contact with the locals - being a country boy as I am. I got a few positive responses, but as anticipated, the larger the city, the less reciprocal smiles I seem to get. It’s not me, it’s them 🙂. Anyhoo, Brisbane has beautiful architecture, and an absolutely sensational botanical gardens. Here’s cheers to mothers. This group of mums were on a rare weekend away from family, enjoying some time with each other. After breakfasting at the restaurant featured on the far side of the lake, I’d planned to take a photo from the jetty on our way out of town. As I approached the pier, my first awareness of this posse was the sound of their laughter. As I observed them from afar -they seemed relaxed and happy, clearly enjoying each other’s company. I took some candid pictures of them before approaching them to retrospectively ask their permission. As I approached, I said hi, and how I’d noticed their laughter. They apologised for making too much noise. In this peaceful place, Daylesford Lake, how interesting our society is, that they felt the need to apologise for laughter. I told them their laughter was beautiful and infectious. I showed them the photos I’d taken and asked if it was ok. They were fine with it and I offered to send them to them, which they we delighted to have, as a memory of this special time in their lives. In a seamless segue, I happen to be married to one of the most amazing, self-sacrificing, caring mothers I have ever met. I feel honoured to have her in my life, and so appreciative of all she gives to her family. Texture, colour, shapes, contrast. Combining these things comes naturally to my amazing wife, as curator of our beautiful home and surroundings. She’ll ask me “what colour should these walls be?” And I’ll say “hmmmm” in a Homer Simpson kind of way. I can’t really picture stuff until I see it. If it weren’t for her, I’d probably be living in a mismatched psychedelic collection of god knows what furniture and “feature walls”, while wearing pineapple dressing gowns, luminous green shorts, pink paisley shirts and a red fez.
