And I was such a thoughtful friend, such a passionate father, such a good pediatrician, attending to all the wants of my little auburn brunette’s body! My only grudge against nature was that I could not turn my Lolita inside out and apply voracious lips to her young matrix, her unknown heart, her nacreous liver, the sea-grapes of her lungs, her comely twin kidneys.

quick sanser for anon. both quotes are from nabokov’s lolita which struck me with how many references there are to it in sansa & petyr’s storyline

“Myles had been possessed of jug ears, a crooked jaw, and the biggest nose that Jon Connington had ever seen. When he smiled at you, though, none of that mattered,” ~ Jon Connington, A Dance With Dragons

aka “Yeah no he had the prettiest smile ever I promise I’m not delusional”

“Authors should not be ALLOWED to write about–” you are an anti-intellectual and functionally a conservative

“This book should be taken off of shelves for featuring–” you are an anti-intellectual and functionally a conservative

“Schools shouldn’t teach this book in class because–” you are an anti-intellectual and functionally a conservative

“Nobody actually likes or wants to read classics because they’re–” you are an anti-intellectual and an idiot

“I only read YA fantasy books because every classic novel or work of literary fiction is problematic and features–” you are an anti-intellectual and you are robbing yourself of the full richness of the human experience.

"you are functionally a conservative" is such a good and clarifying insult

Literally right after I saw this post, I saw another post in a discord chat for BOOK EDITORS in which an outspokenly liberal editor talked about how Nabokov should have never been published because he wrote about p*dophiles and described women's bodies in ways that made her uncomfortable. She described his writing as "objectively terrible" and said she wanted to burn his books. And other editors were bringing up classics they didn't like and talking about how they wanted to throw them in the trash. This wasn't like a light "unpopular opinion!" conversation. This was actual book editors talking about how books should be destroyed and censored.

There is something so scary and toxic in global culture right now. The revival of fascism is influencing everyone's mindset and approach to art, regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum.

I see far more books being censored today than when I was a kid. Librarians handed me The Catcher in the Rye, The Sexual Politics of Meat, and Animal Farm when I was literally 8-11. My mom would never have taken a book away from me. I read everything from the Tao Te Ching to the Qur'an to atheist texts under my desk at school. Teachers thought nothing of it or encouraged it. Books seemed universally acknowledged as sacrosanct to me.

Now I can't find any adults who don't hesitate or want to make exceptions when it comes to censorship. Even the most liberal social activist librarians I know go, "well except for book X..."

Functionally conservative. It's so important to have the language to express that.

Thank you for this addition!

And, following up on the previous post …

“This makes me uncomfortable” is NOT a valid reason for censorship

These fucking book editors should remove themselves from the profession ASAP 😡

The only reason a book should be removed, the ONLY reason, is “we are keeping it in the restricted section for research because its only intended function is to cause harm.”

And to be clear, when I say this, I’m talking about shit like To Train Up A Child and The Protocols of Zion. One is a text responsible for the deaths of multiple children because it’s an abuse how-to, and the other is entirely fabricated “protocols” from a group that never actually existed but is claimed to represent all Jews, and it’s basically one long antisemitic screed.

And even these should be available. Just. Not where they’re gonna be used to start a white supremacist cult.

if hotd is supposed to be the actual series of events that fire and blood is historicizing it IS really funny that criston cole comes out of episode eight being mythologized as THE KINGMAKER who changed history in one decisive action and played the game of thrones because he carried both good and evil with him. And Aemond who was also there with Criston the entire time in an even sillier outfit just gets completely erased out of the historical record in that moment. out of my way targboy im about to reach heaven through violence

in hindsight this sure does make the end of the chapter make a lot more sense i did think it was kinda weird when i read it for the first time

the way grrm does house-based appearances for the more prestigious houses is so funny to me bc its exactly the way a thirteen year old girl would do it. outside of the starks and maybe the florents or manderlys he never describes actual facial features or body types that are passed down its ALWAYS eye color + hair color double whammy to the point where anyone from these families can be recognized as a member by their eye and hair color. its soooo ridiculous can u imagine being some random merchant with green eyes and blond hair and EVERY person you meet is like wow you MUST be a lannister 😉😏 and u cant even be annoyed about it in public bc rich ppl r crazy and will track u down for ‘insulting their house’…

we need ugly gross disgusting feminism again without conforming to aesthetics and advertisement companies i want pit hair i want leg hair i want weird haircuts i want to get rid of diet culture and ads for pink razors and make-up i want women to reject biological determinism and push away from the overwhelming tradwife narratives that social media feeds everyone ('natural hormone cycles' and 'divine feminine' and all of that shit) etc. i want more women working i want heterosexual relationships to get more balanced i also want it to be a norm for heterosexual couples to assess role assignments in the relationships and think critically about why they want children i want having children not to be something people just do because it is expected of them. I want a dyke for president. Etcetera

-Ma’am, you and… your pig can’t be here. -Is it that I can’t be here… or that I’m not allowed to be here? See I can physically be here. But what you meant to say is that you’re not allowing me to be here.

GRRM writing female characters: l want to explore the depths of woman. Femininity is so complex and really is at the core of any female character, especially in a medieval system driven by the patriarchy. I want to explore that I want to write women as people so here have a widowed mother who’s watching her teen son become a king and she ends up helping his downfall not because she’s malicious but because she’s his mother and was trying to protect him. And here’s two sister wives who arguably were more influential than their brother and husband and king. And here’s a canonically ugly teenager who’s trying to find her place in the world when she can fit into neither the category of lady or knight. Here are two young sisters both using their specific strengths to survive in environments that wants them dead. I am so good at complex women.

Also GRRM writing female characters: look at this beautiful young lady no one is hotter than her. Men from all over the world chase after her hand. A bastion of grace and class and elegance. Built by the gods themselves to bless this earth. Look here she is getting married and being a dutiful wife and mother. What’s that, you want to learn more about the intricacies of her character? I just told you. She’s the hottest girl in the seven kingdoms and she’s a good wife. Also she’s twelve.
