Cobain Guitars #1: Fender “Vandalism” Stratocaster
This guitar was acquired by Kurt in either the late ‘80s or early ‘90s. He got the sticker from another band called The Feederz. He performed on-stage with this guitar many times and it was smashed at the end of Nirvana’s 1991 concert at the Paramount.
“Cannonball” is a song by the breeders from their 1993 album Last Splash. It contains one of the greatest bass lines in the alternative music genre.
The song allegedly is about the pixies breakup, because Pixies founder Black Francis grew resentful of Kim Deal’s growing popularity and wish for more creative control, eventually shutting her out of the band by relocating from Boston to Los Angeles. “Spitting in a wishing well” is probably a metaphor for Francis’ rejection of Deal. Another ‘inspiration’ for the song is a biography about Marques De Sade (a French nobleman, revolutionary politician, philosopher, and writer, famous for his libertine sexuality).
From an Interview done by Steve Harris on Aug. 4, 1993. Kim Deal: “Cannonball is the first single . SO this is a good one to tell you about because Last Splash, the title of the album comes from some of the lyrics in the song. My sister was reading a biography on the Marques De Sade. And I’m making fun of him. I’m saying:
‘Oh, you little libertine! You’re a REAL cuckoo! ..if you wanna go to hell..COME ON! LETS GO TO HELL! Don’t just jump in …do a cannonball! ( it’s when you tuck your legs up – and you make the biggest splash you can ! ) ..and you know what? I’m gonna be right behind you.. I’m gonna be the last fuckin’ splash.’
