Christian Soriano is bae

AND DO YOU KNOW WHERE HE GOT THAT FROM

I remember the season Christian was in. And he had a problem (because he was fresh out of fashion school) with understanding how to dress bigger women. And Tim Gunn, who has always been a proponent of needing to design fashion for more natural sizes, helped him to get out of that mind set by planting the seed. That growth we see is from this amazing fashion teacher!

this guy created mcafee antivirus and then went completely off the rails. like absolute chaos. he got super rich, moved to Belize, was suspected of murdering his neighbor, fled Belize, had his location accidentally leaked by a Vice journalist who was with him lmfao, was apprehended in Guatemala, faked not one but two heart attacks while in custody to buy time for his lawyer, was deported back to the US, and then ran for president as a libertarian

HOW could I forget this classic

Straight people will literally never understand Frankenstein. This post isn’t even about the gay parts they’re just so bad at understanding Victor and Elizabeth’s relationship

That’s precisely it— I find that when making Frankenstein adaptations, straight people ignore that and choose to overly romanticize it. This isn’t the case with ALL adaptations, but it is with a lot of them. Adaptations tend to portray it as “oh, they were SO in love but it was ruined by the creature/Victor.”  I don’t see it as that though.

These are two different interpretations I have, though there can certainly be more. 1) While Victor loves Elizabeth as a sister, he feels pressured to marry her and does it because he thinks he should, or 2) Victor has genuine attraction to Elizabeth but…. they’re related, among other dubious stuff (in one version of the book she’s his blood cousin and in another she’s his adopted sibling, still not all that good). I feel as though adaptations gloss over evidence in the text for the sake of portraying them as two people in love.

Something about the notion of them being in a true romantic relationship makes me go “hmm,” because it’s certainly not an ideal one imo. If anyone disagrees or wants to comment then feel free to add on

Yes, I absolutely agree! The book itself goes out of its way to show victor’s discomfort with the marriage at quite a few points, as well as deliberately frame his relationship to Elizabeth as being familial by contrasting it with his relationship with Clerval!

Victor is profoundly afraid of settling down with Elizabeth (whether this is because of the familial bond, or his repressed homosexuality, or both, its unclear) The nightmare he has where Elizabeth turns into the rotting corpse of his mother upon embracing her is so rich with material for analyzing but freak old white scholars just say oedipus and call it a day. When the wedding is brought up later he panicks and asks for a months-long journey w Clerval to delay it, and on their actual wedding night he cant bring himself to be in the same room as Elizabeth and their wedding bed.

And speaking of Clerval—its very interesting that when Victor leaves for university, Clerval says his farewell by tenderly pressing each others hands (also the night before they stayed up all night and “could not tear [them]selves away from each other” so. unpack that) But Elizabeth just sort of frets over him like a mom… fascinating! Also theres the Creature swearing to kill Victor’s beloved as payback for Victor destroying his wife-to-be, and then killing Clerval first. Elizabeth does die later, yes, but the immediacy is very telling!

To me Elizabeth’s relationship with Victor kind of represents the true discomfort with heterosexual marriages, especially in rich families where marrying cousins or adopted siblings were startlingly common. She is a figure that Victor sees like a sister, and has a very hard time coming to terms with the fact that he must love her romantically in order to perform the desired heterosexual role of a man of his standing. Reading how Victor describes Clerval, Walton, and even the Creature—and then reading how he describes Elizabeth, makes it so clear that there’s something going on, and adaptations that refuse to recognize this are Cowards and Frauds!

and that's very sexy of me.
