I think one of the most damaging ideologies towards children is the conviction that having children isn’t a calling but a moral obligation.

Not to be a crazy radical or anything, but children deserve to be deeply wanted by their parents.

Children shouldn’t be a “stage” in life that everyone is obligated to fulfill; childrearing is not for everyone. More importantly, children shouldn’t be state-enforced punishments for “irresponsible” sexual behavior.

Children are people with thoughts and feelings just like the rest of us. They are conscious of the way people treat them. And they can certainly tell when they are unwanted and/or resented.

[ID: tumblr tags. they are: #reblog #i also dont think its enough to want a child. i think you need to want a teenager and an adult too #my mom wanted a baby. when i was too old to pronounce spaghetti wrong and let her put me in church dresses she was done with me #my dad wanted a person. he wanted a baby a child a tween a teen and an adult #my dad wanted to watch a person happen. which was different. /end ID.]

Boosting all of the above signal.

I do understand that "intelligence tests" are inaccurate and stupid. That being said, does anyone want to see the IQ test question so terrible that I felt I had to stand up and leave the room?

I spent about ten minutes wondering how there could possibly be an "odd one out" that wasn't related to letters, vowels, consonants, or syllables. I tried desperately to remember any definitions or colloquial uses for these words that could make two of them synonyms or otherwise connect them.

Eventually, I selected "mitts" on the basis that it used a soft "i" sound while the others used hard "a" sounds, even though the question specifically said that wasn't the reason one word was an "odd one out."

That answer was correct. I scrolled down to see what their reasoning for why mitts was correct was...

...and had to restrain myself from putting a fist through the screen of my laptop.

Completely valid reasons to guess the word "mitts":

  • Mitts is the only word of the three that can't be a verb.
  • Mitts is the only plural listed.
  • Grate and blame end in the letter E, and mitts does not.
  • Grate and blame share a vowel sound.

Reasons to guess the word "mitts" if you're playing mental Calvinball:

  • Grate and blame can be "unscrambled" into Greta and Melba, which are names women can have!

this edit is fantastic but i also need people to know the original text says “what’s to keep me from becoming a god” which is pretty high up there in terms of funniest things for a child to say upon realizing he has free will

I can’t post irony or sarcasm on this damn site without someone taking it the absolute wrong way so from now on I’ll add a picture of this little guy whenever I’m feeling sarcastic

the genuineness of this scares me

I feel like Samus Aran, when she’s not on a mission, would have a Tony Hawk type experience with people not recognizing her without her armor. Like she’d get carded buying alcohol or something and the cashier would go “Samus Aran? Ha, it’s spelled just like the bounty hunter too. I wonder what he’s up to now?”

She would definitely take advantage of this when she goes to lesbian bars and stuff. She’d just tell the cute alien girls her name is Sammy because if they knew she was the great Samus Aran they’d expect her to top

I originally put a shortened version of this in the tags but I feel it’s worth adding. Imagine being the alien girl at a lesbian bar on a federation space station. You meets this cute tall human girl who calls herself Sammy and you hit it off and share some drinks and eventually Sammy invites her back to her place. Her place is a space ship that you swear looks familiar but you can’t remember where you’ve seen it. Anyway you disregard it and spend the night fucking the brains out of this buff blonde tgirl. Then in the morning when you go to leave you make a wrong turn and catch a glimpse of the power armor belonging to the bounty hunter known across the galaxy. Imagine the realization that this “Sammy” girl you plowed into the mattress last night is singhandedly responsible for saving the universe multiple times

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capital…

Listen, this is serious.

Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!

It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.

Like, it’s literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.

So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?

Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.

Oh, and while we’re talking about books, if you’ve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely don’t go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately they’re completely free.

Reblogging so you know which sites to totally avoid

Another inside tip from academia: Those papers in really expensive journals that are effectively inaccessible to anyone not in a university network? Depending on the discipline it’s very likely that same paper is on a “preprint” server somewhere, with no access restrictions.

Like if you want to read basically any physics, math, or CS paper, arXiv.org will have you covered, because everyone uploads their papers there before submitting to a journal (and generally updates it after peer review). I know all of my papers are on there. This is such common practice that journals have it baked into their licensing agreements that authors retain the right to upload their work to these places.

So the next time you get hit with that paywall, you may not even need sci-hub, just click the arxiv link on google scholar instead.

if for some reason none of this works, the old “send a email nicely asking for the paper to the author” is always a good trick. remember most scientists hate the commercialisation of scientific knowledge
