Reblogging again because I just realized that if I had this advice in high school I would’ve never made a tumblr account.

Also works for most of those news sites like WSJ or NYT that only let you read a little bit, or block adblockers. Also some disable the scroll bar but if you go to the right side of the console after hitting F12 and look for the CSS element “overflow” and change it from “hidden” to “visible” then you can continue scrolling for free. Might have to click around on different parts of the page to find it, but it should work.

World Heritage Post

Everyone here is dead.

If you’re new to tumblr and want to help encourage artists, then use the tags as a commentary section.

One of the things I disliked about twitter was the mass “consumption“ of art with little to no feedback, and while not everyone was complacent and still replied to art tweets, I see it happening on tumblr too where people reblog with no tags at all, not even the name of the media itself. How do you even organize or find anything on your blog like that? People transferring their engagement habits from twitter onto tumblr is pretty damaging, because Likes do nothing to help spread creations. Only reblogs.

I assure you, rambling in the tags is a good way to brighten creators’ moods. I enjoy reading stuff and it makes me happy when people tell me what they like about my art or how they feel about the things I draw.

There’s no character limit either, so really, go nuts.

Once again, Tumblr manages to succeed via just being honest with their users.

I made a post back around April fool's about the crabs being so popular because the joke was that every other website tries to trick you into clicking things so they can make money from your clicks and what if instead a website just asked "please click this revenue generating crab. It is there to generate revenue. In return you will have clicked on a crab. Nothing more." And the answer to that question was "people will frantically click on that crab. They don't hate the idea of the website getting money, they hate the idea of being profited on against their will".

So Tumblr implemented actual revenue crabs. "For this much money you can fill your or someone else's dash with virtual crabs. This will have the effect of there being crabs on their screen."

And people will buy those crabs. Because yes you're spending money on something stupid and useless but it's being sold to you as "hey you want something stupid and useless?", which is a nice change of pace from every other site trying to make itself out to be something more than what it is.

Twitter is floundering with the checkmark system because it's being sold as "confirm that you are someone important and who you say you are is true", which it isn't at all right now because anyone can buy one. You're buying a useless checkmark that only says that YOU think you're important. Or, more often than not right now, you are intending to trick other people into thinking you're someone you're not.

Meanwhile, Tumblr just said "Consider this double check mark. It does nothing. You will be marking yourself as someone who paid money for a meaningless checkmark and sometimes it will randomly turn into a bunch of crabs, making the site harder to use". And the userbase is like "Well sure, that sounds delightful."

The point is, despite what all the marketing and advertising people have tried to say, painting trash gold and trying to pass it off as something better is almost never as effective as just saying "hey you want this trash?"

Why yes, in fact, I do.

another heavy handed symbolism moment: my mom has a potted sunflower in the kitchen. because it is a sunflower, it keeps turning towards the light from the window. my mother keeps rotating it so it faces inward because she wants "to see its beautiful petals and have it really brighten up the space!" . the sunflower is visibly wilting .

Me: I should do some work, be productive, exercise, anything that will–

My brain: revolutionary girl utena reveals how self-liberation cannot exist while an individual is still embedded within patriarchal power structures designed only to market the idea of revolutionary ideology. while utena rejects the exaggerated femininity of her peers, the logical outcome of this rejection is for her to become the exact opposite, the hero of a chivalric romance, a role that also imposes a (exaggeratedly masculine) code of behaviour and worldview, because her concept of self is firmly attached to the archetypes created by the power structures in place. her “revolution” does not come from the act of defending anthy—because this act is inherently powerless, a means of justifying an exploitative social order through performance—but from the recognition that she cannot liberate another or be liberated while trapped within the current system. the death of the hero is the beginning of her revolutionary consciousness. in this essay i will

big fan of polite and minimal explanations when you need to get out of work, school, plans etc. just a definitive ‘sorry but I can’t make it today.’ and then if they press for details or are rude about it say ‘sorry, something came up. thanks for understanding’ i’m over the idea that you have to exaggerate/overexplain your situation even when you don’t want to do that to be worthy of flexibility and grace in your life

The “thanks for understanding” is a power move, too, because then if they keep pressing it’s like implying that they’re NOT being understanding.
