My take: Hashirama had been so caught in how to do the Right Thing(TM) that would benefit everyone, that at some point down the road he lost himself and his own vision of what he wanted to achieve with the village.

You know, I noticed that to a degree there is huge misunderstading of Hashirama’s Goal TM in the fandom.

He never wanted the same thing Madara wanted and that’s why they clashed and couldn’t work in the end. While Madara wanted to end the constant war and peace... Hashirama just wanted a peacful place to prepare for war.

He wasn’t against wars themselves, just against children dying in them because they have no time to train. The fact that village was created to rely on shinobi’s conflicts never ending and the fact that Tobirama implemented the chunin exam prove it.

He didn’t really loose the sight of Right Thing, his right thing just wasn’t peace.

There's a hundred and one thing in canon that contradict your theory, a) starting with the fact that Hashirama's answer to Madara in the end goes along the lines "You were just too hasty and wanted to solve everything yourself in your lifetime. We just need to trust in those that come after us to continue our work" (I.e. he had the same goal as Madara, he just never hoped to achieve peace in his lifetime and instead tried to raise the younger generation to continue after him) and b) "a place where kids can grow peacefullly" IS a place where there's no war. You do realise that kids exist every year lmao? Like, the fact that this bunch of kids is now 18, doesn't mean there's no 17 year olds in the village, or 16 year olds, or 14 year olds, or 10 year olds lmfao. A country never "runs out" of kids and they don't magically appear after a period without them lmfao. Hashirama AND Madara just used kids as a metaphor for their dream - because they were kids when that dream was born AND it was born out of desire to protect their younger siblings, and c) KIDS ALWAYS DIE IN A WAR. Either as child soldiers or a collateral. If you subscribe to your theory, you basically call Hashirama stupid for not realizing this simple truth d) Hashirama specifically stated his dream is to build a place where his younger brother would be safe - if you think it is about kids, then Hashirama should have stopped aspiring to it once Tobirama grew up lol No, my friend, Hashirama's dream were to live peacefully and so that people he loves never experience war again

This ‘peafcul childhood’ you mean? Where, just to remind you, they had to take part in chunin exam Tobirama implemented where they killed each other to show other villages they’re not that much stronger than them? Where there was no limit at how young a shinobi can be when taken into the force, so 6 year old like Kakashi were put into missions with no problem?

That ‘no child takes part in a war’ where ‘no child’ apparently means ‘civilian children, cause shinobi kids still are trained and send to die’?

Also, Hashirama very much believed his dream was finished before he died. He says as much multiple times in the manga: that Madara was trying to destroy 'the dream that finally happened'.

Rocky Horror is turning 50 next month and people still act like being gay was invented by Ellen in 1997

But honestly! Renowned French poet Théophile de Viau wrote the poetic ode to King James titled "The Duke of Buckingham," containing the immortal lines "One man fucks Monsieur le Grand de Bellegarde/Another fucks the Comte de Tonnerre/And it is well known that the King of England/Fucks the Duke of Buckingham" exactly 400 years ago and people still act like being gay was invented by Oscar Wilde in 1890

Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep were buried together in the 25th century BC and people still act like being gay was invented by renowned French poet Théophile de Viau 400 years ago

Gilgamesh and Enkidu "loved each other like man and wife" in 2700 BC and ppl STILL act like being gay was invented by Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep in the 25th century BC

Nearly every social species on the planet has a non zero frequency of homosexuality and most likely had for millions of years before primates first evolved and ppl still act like being gay was invented by Gilgamesh and Enkidu in 2700 BC

[ID: a comment reading, "i fully know what you mean! but! i did also think "Oscar Wilde published The Picture of Dorian Gray 133 years ago as of 2 months from now, and people still act like being gay was invented by the Rocky Horror Show in 1973" and now i cannot stop laughing making more gay history comparisons." /end ID]

One thing I’ve learned about writing is ”give everything a face”. It’s no good to write passively that the nobility fled the city or that the toxic marshes were poisoning the animals beyond any ability to function. Make a protagonist see how a desperate woman in torn silks climbs onto a carriage and speeds off, or a two-headed deer wanders right into the camp and into the fire. Don’t just have an ambiguous flock of all-controlling oligarchy, name one or two representatives of it, and illustrate just how vile and greedy they are as people.

it’s bad to have characters who serve no purpose in the story, but giving something a face is a perfectly valid purpose.

In case this is confusing, here’s some more explanation.

Yeah = yeah

No = No

No, Yeah = Yeah (the no dismisses uncertainty about the yeah)

Yeah, no = No (the yeah confirms the no)

Yeah- no, for sure = yeah (yeah is the answer, with “no, for sure” as emphasis under the same rule as “no, yeah” where the no dismisses uncertainty about the for sure. Generally this means the speaker actually agrees with the asker)

Yeah, yeah, yeah = no (because either the speaker is not listening/paying attention, does not believe the asker, or they are dismissing the asker, often because they have something else to say/suggest; additionally this one is usually used with familiarity, not strangers, and often accompanies annoyance of some sort)

Yeah- no, yeah = Yeah (same terms as “yeah- no, for sure” but less enthusiastic or less in agreement with the asker, ie: willing to do it but may not want to do it where “it” may be anything from agreeing with the asker to doing a task)

No- yeah, no = No (no is the answer, with “yeah, no” as emphasis under the same rule as “yeah, no”)

Imagine being the asshole who determined an 11 year old is evil because:

  • They didn’t cry as a baby.
  • They have no friends.
  • Their guardian, who is a verbally abusive drunkard, says they’re a bully but has no proof, all because other kids don’t like this child.
  • The pet of another kid ended up dead the day after this child argued with said kid.
  • This child went into a dark cave with 2 other children who ‘were never quite the same afterward’. Said children who had a history of getting into ‘arguments’ with this child.
  • Stole a yo-yo from another kid.
  • This child is excited to learn and possibly make something of themself and was too obvious about it and that was creepy to the adult in question.
  • This child can talk to snakes thereby making them related somehow, to an old person people think is evil.

Tom Riddle may have done some questionable things by age 10/11, but he was a kid. Wanna know what I had done by age 11?

  • Stole $100 from my sperm donor because he annoyed me and I wanted ice cream.(He technically stole that from his disabled client so don’t feel bad for him. He went to jail for it.)
  • Slammed a friend’s head in between two doors and then violently shut the doors because we got into a fight and I wanted to hurt her like she hurt me.
  • Said homophobic shit because that’s what the church was spouting about people all the time and I only knew the words as insults, not meanings.
  • Beat the shit out of a kid who threw a basketball in my face to try and get a laugh from his friends.
  • Shoved a kid’s head through a fence because he laughed at me for being fat.
  • Cheated on various school tests multiple times without hesitation because I didn’t want to study, and then lied about it.
  • Stole another kid’s skateboard and broke it because I didn’t like how he looked at me.
  • Stole a girl’s public library book for an entire school year, so she rang up a huge debt with the library, and got in trouble with her parents who grounded her for months and took away all her privileges. And then slipped it into her bag on the last day of school, partially destroyed to get her in more trouble. Why? Because she spent the first week of school making everyone laugh at the fact that I lived in a project and was too poor for more than 1 uniform that had to be hand-washed every night that week so I didn’t go to school dirty.
  • Stole a kid’s book from a store because I wanted it and had no money to get it myself.

Am I an evil person? No. Did I have to learn some harsh ass lessons to not become a n evil person? Yes. Did someone actually decide to pull me aside and explain why I was in the wrong instead of burning what meager possessions I had as a poor child, thinking that would show me my actions are wrong? Yes.

Dumbledore had the opportunity to set Tom to rights the proper way and he didn’t.

When people argue that he was Tom’s teacher and it’s not his job to help Tom, I have to wonder what the hell is wrong with them? My teacher saw me struggling and my trash attitude and actions and worked with my mom to get some shit fixed. She talked to my parental figure and they made certain I got help. This woman literally offered me the job of cleaning her house to pay for my senior trip which she was going on as well! She gave wisdom when it was needed. She listened to my problems.

Teachers are literally supposed to help their students. And they’re supposed to pay attention to see if something is wrong, and try to help if they can. Dumbledore knew something was wrong. He chose to do nothing but treat the problem child with distrust instead of thinking of him as a work in progress. Tom could have been shown basic kindness and could have been turned on a better path.

He was not evil when Dumbledore met him, but what Dumbledore learned beforehand, after literally getting a woman drunk, and then what he saw in person, cemented the idea of Tom Riddle being beyond saving.

Who the hell is Albus Dumbledore even decide if someone’s not worth saving?

His actions speak louder than his words. Dumbledore does not need to say, ‘I think Tom Riddle is beyond saving’ for the point to get across. If you are in a position of power(like being the Deputy Headmaster and teacher of a school) and you are concerned about a student, your job as an educator is to guide them and help them.

His lack of handling of a child living in a hot spot during a muggle war where bombs are a thing and London, Tom’s home city, is being perpetually attacked for years where people are dying all the time, is concerning. The fact that none of the teachers considered that this wasn’t a safe place for muggle-raised kids to go back to, is ridiculous.

Dumbledore repeats this same judgmental attitude with Severus Snape. Snape was poor, ugly, the son of a disowned Pureblood, and a Slytherin, meaning not liked by anyone, including Albus. He has shown prejudice against Slytherins in the series many times. Tom, Severus, not awarding points properly, telling Snape his good actions meant he should have been in Gryffindor instead of Slytherin(implying Slytherins can’t do morally good things and that only Gryffindors can), etc…

Snape was not useful compared to James Potter. James, the son of a prominent Pureblood family on Dumbledore’s side that had money and status, natural good looks, admiration from his peers, talent in Transfiguration(Albus’ subject), and a Gryffindor. Albus’ favs. Favoring James bred respect and made James more willing to follow Dumbledore’s orders without question. And because he saw James as a more useful tool, Severus, who was in a very obviously unhealthy home situation, let alone the shit going on at school, was ignored and then forced into silence so he didn’t ruin Dumbledore’s precious plans for his favorites.

Two chances to act. To stop something before it got serious, and he didn’t. Tom reminded him of Gellert and it was enough to unnerve him and make him decide that Tom was already going be just like him some day. And by not even trying to stop it, he admitted that Tom wasn’t worth the effort. And Severus was obviously not worth the effort either. He had nothing to offer the Master Manipulator.

More quality content if you believe Dumbles wasn’t all that and a slice of pie.

I legit thought it was about Harry att first, tired and not processing but they are really similar in most regards, and I was like yeah. Then it clicked my head and I spooked my dog by saying Fuck Dumbles.

The Gollum game is such an incredible throwback. Back in the PS2 era that type of buggy movie tie-in game was a dime a dozen & no one would've even noticed but by virtue of coming out in 2023, the last of its breed, it's a king, beheld with quiet horror by all. It crashes every five minutes even on the best hardware and when apologizing for its instability the devs misspelled their own game's name

"It looks like a PS2 game" is usually an inane insult and I guess it is if used for graphics here but in every other way? Yes, it's exactly like something that went right into the budget racks in 2004. It captures the weird frenzy of LotR releases during the trilogy so perfectly, it's like those ones that had the book license but not the movie one or one of the weirder spin-offs EA jammed out to exploit the license

Uh… Um… Ships aren’t illegal.

Ships are ONLY ILLEGAL IF...

The Vessel switches off their location-transmission devices, thereby making themselves a HAZARD TO MARITIME NAVIGATION, in order to ENGAGE IN ILLEGAL ACTS.

The Vessel is FRAUDULENTLY DISPLAYING a national flag that is NOT OF THEIR REGISTERED PORT OF ORIGIN.

The Vessel is otherwise engaged in ACTS THAT VIOLATE SOLEMN MARITIME LAW, and may face fines and prosecution in admiralty court for their offense in their port of origin or nation in which the offense was registered.

Other than that, no ships are illegal.

Actually I regret to inform you some ships ARE illegal. Sailing a ship you know to not be seaworthy may constitute insurance fraud, which is very illegal.

Today instead of a problematic ship, we present you the guidelines on how to avoid the most common mistakes that result in a ship becoming problematic.

Q: As someone who was a teenager for Section 28 Part 1, I just want to […] say a massive thank you for speaking up about Section 28 Part 2. What’s it been like at the moment, working on a show that has got such cool and interesting things to say about gender broadly and masculinity more specifically?

When people ask, “How can I tell if someone is disabled or just lazy?” I think about my parents.

My parents have known me my whole life. When they’re not actively contemptuous of me, they do seem to be somewhat aware of my general personality and character. In one of his nicer moments, my dad has called me “sweet-natured.” They can tell that when I make them a surprise breakfast or lunch that I enjoy being helpful and doing nice things for people.

They know from watching me grow up that I have always had trouble keeping my room clean, getting homework done, and keeping my desk tidy at school.

The longest I can push myself past my limits is about nine months. Then I collapse and end up less functional than I was before I pushed myself. This has been a pattern throughout my middle and high school years. I would go to public school for about a year, and then collapse and have to do the rest of my education at home. My work history follows this pattern, too.

I once sat in a therapy session with my dad to talk about the constant struggle we were having at home because he wanted me to help out more and do better in school. When he asked me why I didn’t do things, I broke down in tears, because I couldn’t explain it. “I just CAN’T. I want to, and I CAN’T.” Nobody listened.

My mom asked me why I don’t do things, and I said, “I just can’t. I sit there for hours trying to convince myself to do things, and I can’t. Move.”

And she said, “Don’t think about it, just do it,” completely missing the point.

When I got older I found words for the things I was dealing with. I got professionally diagnosed, and I’d look up information about my diagnosis and e-mail articles to my parents explaining what my disability is and why I can’t do things.

My parents have firsthand information about my character (helpful, likes doing things for others) and my history with disability (can’t consistently keep things clean, can’t manage a daily schedule). I’ve talked to them extensively about my diagnosis and given them information about it. They have known me my whole life, and I’ve always been this way. And they still, STILL choose to believe I’m just a bad person who doesn’t try and doesn’t care.

My disability isn’t invisible, people refuse to look at it.

People like problems they can yell at. They like having a target for their frustration. They don’t want to admit disability is real, because they want problems that they can either solve, or blame someone else for. And the disabled person themself is  their scapegoat, someone who can’t ever opt out of their role because the disability is never going to go away.

My disability isn’t invisible, people refuse to look at it.

My disability isn’t invisible, people refuse to look at it.

My disability isn’t invisible, people refuse to look at it.

“The longest I can push myself past my limits is about nine months. Then I collapse and end up less functional than I was before I pushed myself.“

Oh.
